This is a hikers paradise with miles of hiking trails from this secluded cabin on 80+ acres. You have private access to one of the best canyons in this beautiful setting. The property accesses Canyon of the Ancients National Monument. 8 cliff dwellings are within a 45 minute hike from cabin. IF CABIN IS BOOKED:

Come and enjoy a quiet & relaxing vacation.
Sorry, no smoking or loud parties, no exceptions!

The space
The cabin has all the comforts for a long or short stay. Queen bed with pillow top, internet and wifi, 4 burner 1949 refurbished gas stove, quiet ac/heat, fenced in patio with table & chairs and barbecue, dining inside or out. Internet and wifi calling was installed in April 2020.
The private cabin bathroom is heated with a sink & toilet and outside fully enclosed shower just a few steps off the back cabin door with all the amenities. Please look at the photos for the washer/dryer set up as it's the old fashioned way but works well.
There is a TV and Blue Ray DVD player and many movies in the cabin.
There are many private Anasazi ruins to explore in the canyons from your cabin. The photo's of the canyons are a big part of the property and the National Monument adjoins us with many trails and side canyons beyond to explore. There is a tipi we own in the main canyon on a beautiful overlook. If available you are welcome to use the tipi. You would need sleeping bags and pads if you wanted to venture out for a night under the stars. It's about a 25 minute hike from the cabin. SORRY, NO PETS!

Where you’ll be

Cortez, Colorado, United States

It's a great part of the area that you don't see elsewhere. It has the Ute Mountain that you view from your cabin (10,000 ft.). You are in the high red rock desert (5600ft) with pinions and old juniper trees that are estimated over 900 years old. There is an historic cemetery in the canyon you hike to. The original road was washed-out along with homes in 1911. The old road used to be near the cabin. There are archeologists excavating on the property's Anasazi ruins that date back thousands of years ago. McElmo Canyon was known for its produce and took 1st place for peaches in the Saint Louis World's Fair in the 1910's. There's a book in the cabin on the settlers that lived and died on the property.

Originally from San Diego I now live in the 4 corners area for the last 20 years in beautiful McElmo Canyon. I Love exploring, hiking, riding and the outdoors. Me and my partner Steve have created a safe haven here for animals in the wild and don't allow hunting. We have an organic garden that is shared with the community here and we live in harmony with the land that surrounds us. I am grateful & blessed everyday to live here and share this part of the world with others. I'm fortunate enough to be a steward of this magical place. Mark

During your stay

I have put together a small pocket guide in the cabin that you can take with you on your hikes. It has photo's to help you navigate into the many miles of private trails & canyons. It will get you started and then its up to you to discover the many other side canyons and ruins beyond the guide book.
If available I can show you the canyon trails and get you started. There may be someone to take you on a loop and give you an overview and from there you can go deeper into the canyons and surrounding area.
I prefer guests that are comfortable in nature or wanting to discover that part of themselves.
