Experience the best Portland has to offer from a private studio in a lush, backyard garden. Our beautiful, eco-home on a quiet street is conveniently located in Southeast Portland’s best and most walkable neighborhood.
Tucked etween Hawthorne and Division, you’ll have easy access to award-winning restaurants, movie theaters, coffee shops, parks, and so much more. Our 1909 built home is clean, tranquil, and truly unique. Previously featured on Portland's Build it Green home tour.
The one-room light-filled studio is perfect for a single or couple. It has a comfortable full-sized bed with nice linens, a small table and chairs, coat and luggage racks (there is no closet), and a place to sit and read while you enjoy complimentary tea and coffee. Whatever season you are visiting Portland in, you will find the studio to be quite comfortable. It stays nice and cool in the warmer months with a ceiling fan, and the convection heater keeps it warm in the winter. There is an iLive clock radio suitable for playing music off of iPods and iPhones. Beautiful photography by a local artist graces the walls and changes with the seasons.
There is a large, beautiful bathroom for your use on the main floor of the house, which is located about twenty steps away via flagstone pavers. The extra wide and deep bathtub can fit two people and all natural soap, bubble bath, and epsom salts are provided. There is a shower nozzle, but please note that there is not a stand-up shower available. There is also a claw-foot bathtub in the garden with hot water for the more adventurous bathers. Plush towels and bathrobes are provided.
Several spas are in the neighborhood for guests who are looking for that extra level of relaxation. We also work with a licensed massage therapist who will come to the house if you wish to receive a massage without even needing to leave the property.
Our open and bright kitchen is available for use and a pleasure to cook in. We are vegan and kindly request that animal products aren't brought in.
Portland is full of beautiful parks and rivers, including Mt. Tabor and Laurelhurst, which are close by. A picnic basket is available for your use and the neighborhood's natural and specialty markets have just what you need for your outing.
We share our home with three fun cats, but we keep the studio cat free. We are more than happy to provide recommendations of things to do and see to make your trip to Portland truly memorable. We respect your privacy and with our bedroom and bathroom on the upstairs level of the house, there is plenty of room for everyone. We are LGBTQ friendly. Come find out for yourself why we are in love with our home, neighborhood, and city!
We are less than 3 miles to downtown and about 10 miles to the airport. Public transportation within walking distance makes getting around the city without a car easy. You can often find a Zip Car or Car2Go close by. A couple of bike shops in the neighborhood rent bikes and cycling in our neighborhood is easy and popular. There is always ample, free street parking in front of our house.

The studio and the house are really a work of art. Everything was absolutely immaculate and perfectly laid out with everything we needed to be comfortable. Joelle anticipated every need we had and made our stay very pleasant. This is a really beautiful part of portland and you couldn't find a more comfortable pleasant place to stay.
Staying with Joelle & James in their gorgeous and serene garden studio was one of the most amazing travel experiences of mine. The neighborhood is absolutely fantastic with easy access to all the other cool areas of Portland. The backyard studio is very private and one of my favorite things was soaking under the stars in the outdoor clawfoot tub. I really hope that I'll be able to return soon! Thank you!!!
It was a short but very pleasant stay. The place looks just like in the picture: cozy, quite, comfortable, in a beautiful context. I enjoyed it very much. Joelle and James made it all very easy. Thank you, Joelle and James.
My sister and I stayed in Joelle and James' garden studio during a road trip from SF to Vancouver. They were incredible hosts - warm and inviting, and not a detail was missed. We felt so safe and welcome in their space, and had a blast exploring the neighborhood in the short time we were there. The location is great - in a great neighborhood and close to downtown if that's where you're headed. Very easy to find. We will definitely be back!
What a wonderful place to stay! The studio is very comfortable, and the bed is excellent! I slept like a baby! It is in a great, very walkable area.
I didn't get to meet James, but Joelle was very nice and helpful.
I had a lovely time there and will stay again if I get a chance!
Thank you Joelle!
I had the most incredible night at James and Joelle's. I thought from the photographs that I would love it, but my expectations were far exceeded. Beyond being a lovely and inspiring place, the consciousness and thought and artfulness that this couple put into their lives and the treatment of their guests just astounds me. I highly recommend adding this cozy spot to your itinerary.
The only negative of my stay was that as my first Airbnb experience, no other will ever be able to top it.
This was a wonderful experience. The room is 5 star hotel like. It is spotless, artsy and very comfortable. The neighborhood is very safe and has easy access to bus stops. Joelle and James provided everything you possibly need. We had the pleasure of meeting Joelle who was very friendly and considerate.
I had a fantastic experience staying in the Urban Garden Studio. Joelle and James are such gracious hosts and the space is beautiful, tranquil and inviting. The neighborhood is cute and so close to many shops and restaurants. I wish I could have stayed for more than one night!
Staying with Joelle and James in their beautiful garden studio was such a unique experience. First off they're both so lovely - there when you need them and great to chat with but for the most part it felt like I had the place to myself. The studio was fantastic, private, and charming. You couldn't ask for a better location, sandwiched into two of Portland's major streets. My only regret - not using the outdoor claw tub!
I totally enjoyed my stay at the Urban Garden Studio.
James and Joelle were perfect hosts. I appreciate that they catered to my schedule and needs. The raspberry oatmeal bars were a delightful treat in the morning. But best of all was the daphne. mmmmmm..........
