About this listing
(We are booked for the summer.) Experience the best Portland has to offer from a private studio in a lush, backyard garden. Our beautiful, eco-home on a quiet street is conveniently located in Southeast Portland’s best and most walkable neighborhood.
This one-room studio is like a cozy cabin. You'd never guess that you were just a couple of blocks away from the vibrant Hawthorne District.
Chosen as one of Portland's 10 best Airbnb rentals by Portland Monthly Magazine, it's hard to find a better deal. Tucked between Hawthorne and Division, you’ll have easy access to award-winning restaurants, movie theaters, coffee shops, parks, and so much more. Our 1909 built home is clean, tranquil, and truly unique. Previously featured on Portland's Build it Green home tour.
The one-room light-filled studio is perfect for a single or couple. It has a comfortable full-sized bed with nice linens, a small table and chairs, coat and luggage racks (there is no closet), and a place to sit and read while you enjoy complimentary tea and coffee. Whatever season you are visiting Portland in, you will find the studio to be quite comfortable. It stays nice and cool in the warmer months with a ceiling fan, and the convection heater keeps it warm in the winter. There is an iLive clock radio suitable for playing music off of iPods and iPhones. Beautiful photography by a local artist graces the walls and changes with the seasons.
There is a large, beautiful bathroom for your personal use on the main floor of the house, which is located about twenty steps away via flagstone pavers. The extra wide and deep bathtub can fit two people and all natural soap, bubble bath, and epsom salts are provided. There is a shower nozzle, but please note that there is not a stand-up shower available. There is also a claw-foot bathtub in the garden with hot water for the more adventurous bathers. Plush towels and bathrobes are provided.
Several spas are in the neighborhood for guests who are looking for that extra level of relaxation. We also work with a licensed massage therapist who will come to the house if you wish to receive a massage without even needing to leave the property.
Our open and bright kitchen is available for use and a pleasure to cook in. We are vegan and kindly request that animal products aren't brought in.
Portland is full of beautiful parks and rivers, including Mt. Tabor and Laurelhurst, which are close by. A picnic basket is available for your use and the neighborhood's natural and specialty markets have just what you need for your outing.
Interaction with Guests
We share our home with three fun cats, but we keep the studio cat free. We are more than happy to provide recommendations of things to do and see to make your trip to Portland truly memorable. We respect your privacy and with our bedroom and bathroom on the upstairs level of the house, there is plenty of room for everyone. We are LGBTQ friendly. Come find out for yourself why we are in love with our home, neighborhood, and city!
We are less than 3 miles to downtown and about 10 miles to the airport. Public transportation within walking distance makes getting around the city without a car easy. You can often find a Zip Car or Car2Go close by. A couple of bike shops in the neighborhood rent bikes and cycling in our neighborhood is easy and popular. There is always ample, free street parking in front of our house.
Other Things to Note
We strive to keep our calendar as up-to-date as possible. If the dates you are looking for are blocked out, they are indeed unavailable.
The full bed is comfortable and inviting with good quality linens. Photography by a local artist graces the walls and changes with the seasons.
James and Joelle were the most wonderful hosts. The garden studio is nested amidst the greenery of trees and bamboo, it is quiet, private (you can draw the floral window shades) and very cozy. James and Joelle truly treat their guests as if they were visiting friends, the attention to detail in every aspect of your stay will really touch you: from the freshly cut flowers, to a beautiful ceramic plate on a nightstand where you could put your jewelry, to bathrobes to enjoy the outdoor tub (which was amasing!), to different blankets for optimal temperature, to transit maps and magazines with local travel suggestions - supplemented by the hosts' personal recommendations, to James' delicious baked goods and a lovely selection of teas, to bubble bath and salt for your bathing pleasure in the in-house bathroom. The house, where you are welcome to use the kitchen, living room and first floor bathroom, has a lot of character and is very well appointed; it is a pleasure to spend the morning there, while sipping a cup of tea. We feel that our stay at the garden studio has really enhanced our one-week trip to Portland. Having conversations with our hosts, petting their 3 adorable cats, exploring the bustling neighbourhoods of Hawthorne, Division, Belmont and Burnside by foot has been incredibly easy and enjoyable, with lots of great food and local boutiques all around. Coming back to the house in the evening, we felt very safe and enjoyed the sounds of the crickets or children playing in the yard. We spent little time downtown and really got to soak up the vibrant neighbourhood life of Portland. When we return to Portland, we would definitely stay at the garden studio again - this is by far the best AirBnb stay we've had! Thank you Joelle and James!
We loved Portland and the urban garden studio so much! We never got to meet James and Joelle, but their friend let us in and told us everything we needed to know about the place. Inside there were tons of books and their personal suggestions of what to do while we were in town. The private bathroom is really nice, and I did take advantage of that bathtub!! The bed was super comfy and the backyard was beautiful! It was like our own little jungle. There's tons of great eating and shopping within walking distance, and everyone we encountered was so friendly! We loved the fresh baked raspberry bars! Also, whenever we needed something we got a response from Joelle and James really quickly! I would highly recommend to anyone, and I can't wait to come back and stay here again!
James and Joelle accommodated our late arriving flight, provided us with tips about the town. The garden studio was even better than advertised. We had a great experience in their wonderful neighborhood.
The garden studio was beautiful, we had a great time soaking in both the indoor and outdoor tubs. The studio is in a great neighborhood within walking distance of a lot of great restaurants and bars. James was extremely friendly and baked us delicious raspberry breakfast bars the first day.
This is the perfect little spot in the perfect neighborhood! Joelle was a fantastic host. She made sure we had everything we needed and even baked us delicious raspberry oat bars for breakfast.
If this space is available I highly recommend booking it!
Joelle and James are amazing hosts, and the garden studio is the perfect space for a stay in Portland. Everything in the apartment is so well designed and Joelle and James have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable. We have stayed in many airbnb places and this is easily one of the our favourites.
Joelle and James were wonderful! They were so welcoming and kind and everything was perfect. Plus, the location is GREAT!
About the Host, Joelle And James
We love our home, neighborhood, and city and enjoy sharing all three with travelers from near and far. James, originally from New York City, is a composer and music director and is well connected to the music and art community in Portland. Joelle, originally from Los Angeles, is a kindergarten teacher. We've lived on our wonderful street since 1999 and can't think of a better place in Portland to be. We are both long-time vegans and have enjoyed exploring the world through our taste buds. As hosts, we strive to give our guests the privacy they desire while still being available to offer insider tips on the best places to eat, play, and explore in and around Portland.
