Peaceful enough to keep coming back

Guests describe a peaceful retreat and many have returned for repeat stays
Named for its generous light — Sonnen Haus or "sun house" in German, is built for two who want to slow down. Situated on seven Hill Country acres between Johnson City and Fredericksburg. You'll arrive with a plan then wonder why you made one at all. With a Dark Sky Texas "Be A Star" designation you're a step away from some of the darkest night skies in Texas. You're five miles from Garrison Brothers Distillery in Hye. Recommended by The Hill Country Bon Vivant. Refreshed May 2026.

The space
Step into Sonnen Haus, where the promise of a perfect weekend awaits you. Begin your day with a leisurely stroll down to the creek, a peaceful tributary to the Pedernales River. Embrace the serenity—the experience is undeniably relaxing. As night falls, gather around the fire pit and let the Texas stars paint a breathtaking backdrop.

THE COTTAGE - Refreshed May 2026.
Step through the door and the world gets quieter. The space has been designed for two people who need to exhale. A queen bed dressed in high-thread-count linens waits beneath blackout curtains, and the private bath offers a walk-in shower and towels thick enough to feel like a small luxury. The kitchenette keeps things easy - coffee for slow mornings and a full sized refrigerator stocked with local "take one, leave one" beers and everything you need to cook. The dining table is perfect for candlelit dinners, or curl up in the living area with a book, a board game, or a streaming marathon on the 55" smart TV.

INTERNET SERVICE
Last Stand runs on underground fiber internet - reliable, fast Wi-Fi that's rare in this part of the Hill Country. Video calls stay smooth, streaming doesn't buffer, and multiple devices can be online at once without slowing anything down. Whether you're taking a few working days at the cottage or settling in for movie night, the connection is consistent regardless of weather.

LAST STAND KITCHEN
Breakfast is part of every stay — prepared by Chef Jack of Last Stand Kitchen. A retired professional chef and restaurant owner, Jack most recently served as Executive Chef at Garrison Brothers Distillery in nearby Hye. He sets breakfast out in the kitchenette before you arrive, so your first decision of the day is just how slowly to make it.

Heading to a winery, a hike at Enchanted Rock, a slow afternoon on the porch or working remotely from the cottage? A picnic lunch is a proper mid-day break - no cooking, no errand, just a meal ready in the fridge when you're ready to step away from the screen. Last Stand Kitchen packs picnic lunches on request — fried chicken, chicken salad, a Hill Country charcuterie board, or something custom Chef Jack builds for your day. Because Jack sources fresh and prepares everything by hand, picnics are made to order - subject to his weekly availability, with at least 7 days' notice before check-in. If you're closer to your arrival than that, send us a message anyway — we'll always do our best to put something together. Message us when you book.

OUTDOOR LIVING
The real magic happens as soon as you step onto the front porch -where every evening turns golden - the kind of Hill Country sunset that stops conversations mid-sentence. When dusk deepens, wander to the shared common area: a hammock and a wood-burning fire pit made for s'mores and slow conversation. The night sky is star-strewn and the Milky Way arches overhead on clear nights.

THE HILL COUNTRY
Located in the heart of the Hill Country, with a seasonal creek running through the property - you're minutes from the vineyards, tasting rooms and farm-to-table restaurants that have made Fredericksburg one of America's favorite wine-country escapes. Spend a morning climbing the pink granite dome of Enchanted Rock, an afternoon among the wildflowers of LBJ State and National parks and an evening on historic Main Street Fredericksburg, where live music drifts out of the doorways and bakeries smell like every good memory.

When a quiet, sun-drenched weekend in the Hill Country sounds like what you've been needing, Sonnen Haus is here. The porch, the linens, and the stars will be waiting.

Guest access
Your stay includes the entire Sonnen Haus cottage and the shared common area at the heart of the property — fire pit, charcoal grill, picnic tables, and hammocks. The porch at Sonnen Haus faces west, so the sunset is yours every evening. The four cottages sit thoughtfully spaced around the common area: close enough to feel like a community when guests want one, far enough apart to feel private when they don't.

Other things to note
The four cottages share a beautiful common area at the heart of the property, including a fire pit, picnic table and hammock. Each cottage has its own porch for privacy when you want it, and easy access to the common area when you don't.

Pets are welcome with a $50 fee per stay (See House Rules for the full pet policy).

WiFi runs on underground fiber - fast and reliable, unaffected by weather.

A Welcome Book is in the cottage when you arrive. QR codes are available for accessing the WiFi network, the Welcome Book and the local area guide.

Neighborhood highlights

Sonnen Haus sits in the Texas-German Hill Country — a corner of Texas shaped by the 19th-century settlers from Bavaria and the Rhineland who founded Fredericksburg in 1846 and gave the region its half-Texas, half-Old-World character. You're a 15-minute drive from Main Street Fredericksburg, where German bakeries, beer halls, and historic homes share the street with art galleries and farm-to-table kitchens. More than fifty wineries lie within easy reach, and just five miles east, the tiny town of Hye holds Garrison Brothers Distillery. We're Amy & Jack. We love to travel but our heart is in the Hill Country, so a few years ago we bought a property and made our dream come true. Jack is a retired professional chef & restaurant owner — most recently Executive Chef at Garrison Brothers Distillery. He prepares the breakfast that's part of every guest's stay through Last Stand Kitchen. We completed a thoughtful top-to-bottom refresh in May 2026 — new linens, restyled interiors, and updated outdoor spaces across all four cottages.
