The space
Vertigo is a clean, stylish, private 3rd floor flat in a gorgeous Victorian with its own separate entrance. Your hosts live downstairs but you have self check-in and your own space in a lovely, top floor flat overlooking your corner of Old Louisville, a historic, residential neighborhood that's a super quick drive to downtown. It's a comfy, livable space designed to feel like home, but better. Guests have called it enchanting, compared it to a Parisian atelier -- and have been known to book a return trip while they're still here.

Our all-five-star reviews say it best, but read on for details on the amazing stay you can expect at what USA Today called One of America's Coolest Airbnbs (as long as you’re ok with the two steep flights of stairs)

This isn’t an impersonal 'investment property'. We dreamed up Vertigo from scratch, inspired by our own travels, and you'll find unique personality and treasures from our jaunts. It's not just a place to sleep; it’s part of your memorable Louisville experience. As avid world travelers ourselves we've made sure you'll have what you need – from a sparkling clean bath stocked with plush towels and luscious amenities to a comfy bed made up with heirloom quality linens.

And while Louisville ordinance doesn't allow Airbnb hosts to provide food or drink, you'll get your first breakfast on us at a local cult-favorite doughnut shop.

We have always taken great care in the cleanliness of our Airbnbs, which you can see in our glowing five-star reviews. We will continue the steps we’ve always taken, which include laundering and replacing *all* linens every stay, with the addition of disinfecting surfaces such as doorknobs, light plates, remote, faucets, and other frequently touched items. We wear gloves and cloth masks while cleaning the space. At least 24 hours is allowed between check-out and check-in so that we have time to properly clean and sanitize. Please let us know if you have any questions about our process, or see Airbnb’s guidelines, which we are following: https://www.airbnb.com/resources/hosting-homes/a/cleaning-guidelines-to-help-prevent-the-spread-of-covid-19-163

Note: because of the time dedicated to cleaning, we are only accepting stays of at least a week, and encourage longer stays with healthy discounts.

*****ALL the DETAILS *****
Now then. With 738 square feet altogether, here's what to expect:

sʟᴇᴇᴘ + ᴄʜɪʟʟ
A roomy, light-filled living/bedroom has a super comfy queen sized Tuft & Needle bed and linens from Red Land Cotton, plus a big (SO comfy!) chaise sofa and chair and Roku TV.

Original hardwood floors and exposed brick and rafters make for a warm and welcoming space.

A funky old wardrobe provides space for your things.

***

ᴇᴀᴛ, ᴅʀɪɴᴋ, ʙᴇ ᴍᴇʀʀʏ
A dining room that's open to the kitchen has a farmhouse-style table (that does double duty as a work desk).

By the window is a vintage rolling bar cart with a Crosley record player and stack of vinyl and a small bar stocked with shaker, glasses, and such. #justaddbourbon

***

ᴄᴏᴏᴋ
A kitchen under the eaves complete with a vintage stove, ikea mini-sink, small retro-style fridge and microwave, toaster, and coffee pot.

There's cookware and good quality knives, plus dishes and cutlery.

***

ᴡᴀsʜ ᴜᴘ
A bright, clean, bathroom with step-in shower and a cocktail ledge. Just kidding, it's a niche for shampoo, but hey, no judging if you like showerbeer. :)

We provide yummy toiletries, and the best toilet paper we can find along with Kleenex because: #priorities.

Also little extras like make up remover, cotton swabs, and lotion. All bathroom items are sanitized between guests.

A couple of fresh white robes, and your own slippers await for even more comfort.

***

ʜᴀɴɢ ᴏᴜᴛ
A small balcony that overlooks our courtyard (where you're also free to chill!) and the Carriage House along with neighboring homes and businesses, with downtown Louisville's skyline a mile away. Not for the vertiginous - you're at the third floor of a talllllll Victorian.

*****ᴍᴜsᴛ ʟᴏᴠᴇ ᴅᴏɢs*****
We have two dogs. You will hear them bark but we discourage extracurricular barking when we're home (and we're not the stay-out-late type;). Truffle is a senior Pomeranian and Cassius Thunderpaws (aka Cash) is Great Pyrenees/German Shepherd bundle of exuberant love. Both available for cuddles!

>>Bringing your own puppers? Check with us first.
We're big fans of dog people and we'd love for you to bring your dog (that's just ONE, sorry, that's not negotiable). We may be able to lend you a crate and will provide a doggie welcome kit.

BUT: we require you check *before* booking and tell me about your dog. I'll send you our house rules for pups for you to agree before proceeding with booking.

And please know they MUST be able to climb the stairs; for your safety and your dog's, we CAN'T have guests carrying a squirming sentient being up the very steep steps.

*****THERE WILL BE RULES*****
We don't have a ton of rules but we mean business on them. This is our home and we've worked incredibly hard on it and ask that you respect it, as well as our neighbors.

There's no smoking (of anything) or vaping in Vertigo, on the balcony, or in the courtyard – anywhere on the property, for that matter. We are so very strict on that! Smoking = leaving.

Registered guests only, and we mean that too. You've been vetted by Airbnb and I'm sure your friends are lovely, but I don't know them, and this is our home, not a place for you to host a gathering. Not even for a quick visit, and not even in the private courtyard. Do note we have a Nest security cam that captures comings and goings on the property.

If you're traveling with a dog we require that you contact us to get the pet rules *before* booking.

You'll find we're very chill so long as you respect these house rules.

*****Party of 3?*****
Vertigo can be a three-guest space but because of the stairs we limit younger ones to ages 12 and up. The third person gets the comfy couch, which is in the same room as the bed.

One more time for anybody in the back: The stairs are steep, the stairs are tall. Dizzying might be a good word for it. We literally named the place Vertigo because of them. Hundreds of visitors have managed so they're not impossible, but they're not to be taken lightly.

Guest access
You get the entire third floor space to yourselves accessed through your own (exterior) staircase. For emergency exits, there is an interior set of stairs with a door at the bottom that is kept closed for privacy.

Other things to note
𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗧!
You guys, I am not kidding about the stairs. There are 32 of them and they are STEEP and they're open. Seriously, this staircase is NOT for the faint of heart. Look at the pictures, read the reviews, and make sure you're cool with them. Nor is it for anyone with vertigo – it is WAY up there. If you bring a dog he has to be able to climb them. Some can't/won't. Please don't find out the hard way; the cancellation policy applies if Fido decides he won't climb, and for everyone's safety you can't carry your dog up the stairs.

You can walk to a few of our favorite neighborhood places [check the Neighborhood section below], and energetic types walk downtown, but plan for a quick and cheap car ride to NuLu, the Highlands, and other neighborhoods. You'll probably see people with different life experiences and resources than you – as someone with discretionary travel money – will have. If you’re not ok with that, we might not be right for you and that’s ok. Know thyself.

The space has a new Daikin mini-split ductless heating and cooling system, it's spray foam insulated, and we have a new Cool Roof. BUT. It's still a third floor in Kentucky and remember heat rises, so when it's hot in the city, it's not going to be refrigerator cold in here.

𝙊𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘. That means you'll hear cars, trucks, planes, church bells, and tuk-tuks -- just kidding, no tuk-tuks (probably), but if you're used to a quiet neighborhood you'll notice the street noise. Louisville's airport is also conveniently close to downtown, which is great, till it's not. It's all relative -- guests from busier areas call this a quiet corner, while others suggest earbuds for light sleepers. It's best to know where you fall on that spectrum.

Louisville, Kentucky, United States

We're in Old Louisville, in a historic, urban, primarily residential neighborhood called Limerick that's walking distance to downtown (20-30 minutes, depending on where you're headed). The amazing St. James Court, and Central Park are a short walk away. This is the largest concentration of Victorian homes in the country, and is a historic preservation district. Basically, you can walk around and just ogle mansions to your heart's content.

You're in the heart of a diverse residential area. What does our diversity mean for you as a traveler? You'll likely see people with different life experiences and resources than you – as someone with discretionary travel money – will have.

Here's a look at what we've got nearby (15 minutes or less on foot). Please note things are subject to change in the evolving situation so check with me and/or the business before planning to visit them.

>A great family-owned small craft beer brewery offering carry-out beer at Old Louisville Brewery

>Crazy good doughnuts and excellent local coffee at the awesome North Lime shop (first breakfast there is free on us!:) Order online for curbside pick-up.

>The fabulous Bar Vetti with cocktails and sumptuous Italian fare that the local restaurant critic calls Louisville's best food.Order online for curbside pick-up.

>Six Ten Magnolia, the flagship restaurant from James Beard award winning Edward Lee (who you may have seen on Mind of a Chef or in the New York Times). Order online for curbside pick-up.

And then all sorts of cool little nooks and crannies I can't wait to tell you about. Old Louisville isn't on the radar of many travel writers so you can really stumble across some cool off the beaten track places -- with the right guide :)

I'm a freelance writer, mostly writing about food & travel, bourbon, home & design, and dogs -- basically all the best things -- and one of Airbnb's longest tenured superhosts. My husband and I call a rambling 1887 Victorian in Old Louisville home when we're not out traveling ourselves. We welcome wanderlusters to our third floor flat Vertigo Louisville and our boho Little Carriage House on the Alley. We live with our two very friendly pups, Cassius "Cash" Thunderpaws, an exuberant big dog, and Truffle, our elder little fluffball. Our favorite thing (besides traveling and renovation:) is helping travelers make the most of their stay in Louisville. Our Airbnbs and home have been featured in Apartment Therapy, USA Today, and Lonely Planet and our guests are often kind enough to say they're the best Airbnbs they've ever experienced! :)
