The highest room in the compound. Three walls of windows above the palm trees, the brightest space we have. A big monitor and Yamaha studio speakers for serious work or music. A meditation nook, a queen bed, a good bathroom. Bamboo, coloured glass, polished cement, all made by hand. One of our two gems. The space
The highest room in the residency. You wake floating above the canopy, three walls of windows. The first thing you see is sky through coloured glass.

A little like a cockpit. You look out over the palm tops and over the studio below, with curtains to close when you want to be alone. A big external monitor and Yamaha studio speakers for digital work or music. A small adjoining room for meditation, a queen bed, a good bathroom, and a small library of books on creativity, culture and a few all-time favourites. Bamboo walls, coloured glass, polished cement. Built by hand, designed by contemporary artist Ole Ukena.

This is one of our two gems, alongside Director's Cut. Films have been written here. Books finished. A few people fell in love. We made no promises.

AIR is an open artist residency on Jalan Seniman (Artist Street) in central Ubud since 2013. Six rooms around one 300sqm shared studio, breakfast in the community kitchen, an eight minute walk from town. Both are valid: come to make work, or come to rest.

Want more privacy? AIR has a second home twelve minutes away. Beyond that, the place is open: the 300sqm shared studio, the communal kitchen, the bonfire spot. Use the communal desk anytime you need a change of scene. We host communal dinners every few weeks. Come if you feel like it, skip it if you don't. Both are fine.

The studio is the heart of AIR. 300 square metres, 8-metre ceilings, Berlin warehouse meets tropical bamboo. It's a working space: sewing machines, freehand embroidery machines, sometimes a production run on. If you want to use the machines, say for a fashion collection, or need real studio space for a project, tell us ahead and we'll sort it. It's alive, so it shifts. Some weeks humming and busy, some weeks quiet and yours. The photos are never quite current. You'll understand, as a maker.

Leave the shared kitchen as you found it, and we're good.

Please read this part. It's for your own good.

The last 200 metres into AIR are on foot or by scooter. Cars can't come all the way in. We handle the transfer ourselves, no matter how many bags or how much luggage. Just let us know when you're arriving and we'll take care of it.

Here's the upside. You're in quiet nature, a river right there, rice paddies all around, but downtown Ubud is a 2 to 3 minute scooter ride away. Hundreds of restaurants, yoga studios, cafés, galleries. You get both: the calm of the countryside, pretty much downtown.

This is still a forest. Geckos, frogs, the occasional unidentifiable bug, no 24-hour front desk. The AIR family is around most of the time and happy to support you in any way, from local tips to logistics to whatever you need. We run regular community dinners: Nano cooks, guests show up, someone usually picks up a guitar.

The tropics are humid, Ubud more so in rainy season. We can't change the climate and wouldn't want to. Come ready for it.

We share the land with Rudi and his Balinese family. They rent scooters and are glad to show you a little of the local way of things.

Neighborhood highlights

AIR is Jalan Seniman 1: Artist Street, number one. Full disclosure: our Indonesian is not fluent, so we may have put that name on Google Maps ourselves. It stuck, and we'll take it.

The neighbourhood is Juwuk Manis, which means Sweet Orange. You reach it off Jalan Kajeng, the famous lane beside Ubud Palace, an eight minute walk or a few minutes by scooter from the centre of town. Step out and you're on the Kajeng rice field walk, also known as Subak Juwuk Manis, one of the most central paddy walks in Ubud. A flat loop through working rice fields, right at the door.

On one side, the rice and a bamboo-lined river. On the other, the whole of Ubud: restaurants, warungs, yoga studios, cafés, galleries, the morning market. Walk down Jalan Kajeng and the path is paved with engraved stones, names, dates and small messages, each one paid for by a visitor who wanted to help keep the walk up. A piece of public art you read with your feet, lined with a market and warungs all the way to the main road.

Deep green nature and basically downtown, at once. Painters and craftspeople have kept studios on these lanes for generations.
