Comfy, cozy Five Squared is tucked in a quiet neighborhood near downtown's restaurants, bars and arts; Rupp Arena and UK basketball games and concerts; the hip Distillery District's restaurants; and Meadowthorpe's antique shops. For business travelers, it's also convenient to New Circle Road and local industry. Our place is great for couples, solo travelers, families with kids, and anyone who likes cotton sheets, exposed brick and the gentle rumble of passing trains.

The space
Built in the 1960s, Five Squared is a two-story townhouse that was updated in late 2016 after being completely refurbished top to bottom in 2005. All furniture, furnishings and linens are new, as are most of the appliances. The home features charming exposed brick walls in the kitchen, living room and both bedrooms. The floors upstairs are original hardwood that was refinished in late 2016. The living room and master bedroom are quite spacious. There is lots of storage space, if you need it.

PRIMARY BEDROOM: Queen-size bed with a comfortable mattress, cotton sheets, bedspread and pillows, and 100 percent cotton blanket. Ceiling fan, two nightstands and lamps, ample closet storage and drapes that pull close to darken the room. There's an ironing board and steam iron in the closet.

SECOND BEDROOM: Full/double-size bed with a comfortable mattress, cotton sheets, and down-alternative comforter and pillows. Nightstand and lamp, ample closet storage and drapes that pull close to darken the room.

BATHROOM: Fully equipped bathroom with shower and bathtub, 100 percent cotton linens, hairdryer, shower gel, a sewing kit, and travel-size shampoo and other toiletries in case you forget yours.

KITCHEN & LAUNDRY AREA: Fully equipped with electric stove/oven, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, coffeemaker, French-press coffee pot and electric tea kettle. Pots, pans, cutlery, basic cookware, dishes and glasses are provided. (If you have special needs, let us know and we will try to accommodate.) Easy-to-use portable dishwasher easily connects to kitchen faucet; dishwasher detergent included. Washer and dryer and laundry detergent.

LIVING ROOM & DINING AREA: Full-size sofa that a guest could comfortably sleep on, another chair, a Samsung Smart TV with access to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, etc., and HD broadcast channels (including ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox) via over-the-air antenna signals. Books and board games. Counter-height dining table with seating for three to four.

OTHER: Secure, high-speed Internet and wi-fi throughout the home; iron and ironing board; baby gate; fire extinguisher; smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; multiple locks, including dead-bolts, on all exterior doors and sash locks on all windows. Stairs connecting the first and second floors have a secure rail and 14 steps. There is one step up at the main entrance to the home.

Guest access
You will have access to the entire space, including the private back patio and the front porch (which is shared with the neighboring unit). A lovely courtyard featuring tall, old oak trees is also available to you.

Other things to note
This being a townhouse, you can sometimes hear the neighbors, but it's never been invasive or problematic to our knowledge. A railroad runs behind the complex, but it is never loud and we can't remember ever hearing its whistle; in fact, the gentle rumbling as a train passes is quite nice. Finally, the home is part of a 50-year-old complex so it's a bit time-worn on the exterior; bottom line: Don't judge Five Squared by its cover.

Neighborhood highlights

Our cozy, safe and warm home sits at the edge of the historic Meadowthorpe neighborhood between the quiet, quaint gem of a residential area and a row of former tobacco warehouses. The townhouse complex our home is part of was built in the 1960s and surrounds a lovely courtyard with tall, old oak trees.

Just a five-minute walk away (and an even quicker drive) is a bustling shopping center with restaurants (Jimmy John's sandwiches, the throwback hole-in-the-wall Thoroughbred Lounge), two gas stations, several antique shops, a liquor store and more.

Farther down the road are shopping centers with a 24-hour Kroger grocery store (with a Starbucks and walk-in Little Clinic), Walgreen's pharmacy (open until midnight), UPS Store, a few bank branches and ATMs, several fast-casual and fast-food restaurants, and more.

A three-minute drive away is the hip, new Distillery District, a complex of some of Lexington's best bars (Break Room at Pepper, The Burl Arcade, Goodfella's, Elkhorn Lounge, Battle Axes ax-throwing bar), restaurants (Crank and Boom Ice Cream), breweries/distilleries (Ethereal Brewing, Barrel House Distillery) and live music (The Burl) — all housed on the campus of a former bourbon distillery.

A five-minute drive away is downtown and Rupp Arena, home of the University of Kentucky men's basketball team and Lexington's biggest concerts and entertainment events. Also only five minutes away: Lexington Opera House, Lexington Children's Theater, Lexington Convention Center, downtown restaurants and bars, live music, Thursday Night Live and the downtown business district.

If you're a business traveler, a five-minute drive in the other direction is lots of industry including Amazon, FedEx, UPS, Georgia Pacific, Yazaki North America, Coca-Cola, Aventics, Neogen and Schneider Electric. Also convenient are Big Ass Fans, Lexmark, Webasto and Sumitomo.

Finally, the home is close to New Circle Road, the mostly expressway ring road around Lexington, making for convenient trips to Keeneland (5.8 miles / 10 minutes) and the Kentucky Horse Park (8.2 miles / 16 minutes) in Lexington, and farther afield, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, horse farms and Interstates 64 and 75.
