The house was built in 1970 by a snowbird craftsman who really knew what he was doing, and clearly put all the care and love into building his dream home. The house has everything you could need and stays remarkably cool inside to the point that you only need to turn on the cold blowing central AC on the hottest summer days. I have kept the house largely original and accentuated the 1970's design with period correct stylings through out. (Which brings me to my next point and a NOTE ON STYLE. I happen to love almost all things 70's. I am a child of the 70's so I can just remember what the world looked and felt like back then. With this house I really sought to recreate those memories and that feeling. So all the furnishings in the house are intentional. Nothing is here by chance or neglect, on the contrary I went to great effort to find all the pieces that make this place what it is, and as authentic as it is. Yet amazingly I still get guests occasionally, that don't seem to understand or appreciate that this is intentional, and leave reviews talking about how the decor was "dated", or "not modern", when thats the whole point! So I just wanted to be clear about that, and that you are aware of that if you are thinking of booking here, I hope you are going to appreciate the style of the place and are not going to be compelled to write reviews where you talk about how the decor was not "modern" or "updated" etc (whatever that is)
So with that said....lets continue.... The house is pure Hotel California, and indeed the two big bedrooms with their big black out roll window shades really make you feel like you are staying in a cool old hotel. Both bedrooms have big comfy King-sized beds. Bedroom #2 that I call The Blue room has a separate outdoor entrance. The two bedrooms have what they call a Jack and Jill bathroom, that actually connect them. So you can either share this bathroom or lock one of the doors and then only one of the bedrooms can access it and then the other bedroom can make use of the other full bathroom and shower in the house.
The house is just a super comfortable house, that you kind of dont want to go out from. The living room is huge and has giant views of the surrounding valley and the mountains of Joshua Tree National Park to the south. The stereo has a vintage Marantz receiver with a great warm sound to it, and the turn table is there for you to enjoy, along with a descent little record collection to set the mood, or bring your own sounds. The living room has two very big couches that extra guests can sleep on or there is a queen size air-mattress in the closet that can be placed in the living room comfortably. In a concession to modernity and creature comforts, we now have a TV in the living room! (inside the TV cabinet) with a dvd player (along with a small selection of dvd's) and a Roku box with Netflix etc, you can use for Movie nights. Just sign into Netflix with your own account , and remember to sign out before you leave.
The kitchen is big and has everything you need to cook and entertain with friends in the adjacent diningroom. Also the kitchen has a great breezeway bar that you can saddle up to for drinks (one of my favorite spots to hangout in the house). Or you can take it outside where the real magic is. The house has huge over-hanging porch roofs that provide wonderful shade all day long. There are several great seating areas on the shaded porches of the house for al fresco dinning. Also there are two charcoal BBQ's for grilling it up. Finally there is a huge enclosed back patio space for true out door living. This features a truely unique brand new Fire Hot Tub. This one of kind tub is 100% natural way to Hot Tub. They have these at El Cosmico in Marfa, but this one is the only one I know of in Joshua Tree. This thing is amazing you can use it just a cool/cold pool soaking tub during the hot days. Then at night or whenever, you can start a wood fire in the metal coil to heat this all natural Hot Tub. It does take two hours to get nice and hot but its really worth the wait and its such a unique experience to sit in the hot tub at night with the glow of the fire around you and the stars above. Perfect for a couple as it fits two adults cozily. Then when you are done in the tub get out and straight into the hot water outdoor shower and rinse of and soak in the desert air and views au natural. Outdoor showers are simply the best and once you try this one you'll only be wanting to take your showers outside. There is also a shaded table for hanging out here too. Basically you have most of everything you need here to hang with friends, BBQ, have some drinks, soak in the tub, and stargaze to your hearts content.
ADDITIONAL NOTE - About shoes in the house. My wife is Japanese, and as such THE SUPER 70s has a strictly enforced NO SHOES INSIDE THE HOUSE POLICY!! In Japan they believe that every home has a spirit or House god and so do we believe that here. So if you think that you can't manage to take your shoes off each time you enter the house, then please choose another listing. But it is far more hygienic not to have your outdoor shoes on inside, it will save my carpet from being destroyed and you will feel very Zen and the House God will smile on you! Arigato gozaimasu!!
Another important thing to note -
Given that the house is so much within nature, that nature is always trying to get inside(they know it's cozy in there). And although we make every effort to make sure that little friends don't get in the house, its a constant battle. So if you are staying there do NOT leave food out at all. Keep your food in the fridge when you go out or go to bed. Do not leave the doors of the house open at night, keep screen doors closed always, or you will likely have visitors, and not just bugs... And I really have to make a point here as I have had to deal with several extremely unrealistic guests regarding the nature here. So know this, if you see a mouse, a rat, a bat, a bug, a snake, a lizard, a tarantula, a scorpion, or any other numerous types of animals here, either outside the house or even inside of it (as people leave doors open constantly..) if you see any animals that you don't like or are scared of and you then come to me demanding some kind of refund, you will NOT be refunded. By booking this listing you are accepting that this area is the home of all these creatures and it is you who is the guest in their home. So if you see a mouse or anything other creature, it is not a symptom of some sort of unsanitary conditions (like in the city), it is simply that one of the many creatures has gotten inside one way or another, it is certainly not likely that this will happen, but it is certainly possible, and while we make every effort to seal up entry points and stop creatures from getting in, it is not possible to stop them 100%, especially with guests leaving all the doors open... And we are not in the business of trying to exterminate the local wildlife, indeed we want to have as little impact as possible. So if you are going to have an issue with any of the above, then this is not the listing for you! I'll say it again.. The Desert is the Home of these Animals and you are the Guest in Their home.
Guest access
Guests have access to the entire house and surrounding 10 acre property, excepting the area in the immediate vicinity of the Moon Yacht Airstream, if guests are present. Also the mountain behind the house is government land but can be hiked up for really great views of the entire area.
