Rest easy in the Oaktagon Tree Yurt of 1 Big Sustainable Island. This off the grid (no electricity) one-of-a-kind home is perched on a 14 acre, semi-private island 1/2 mile from shore on a Maine lake. The 900 sq. ft. octagonal home, built around a living Red Oak tree, is designed to make your stay comfortable, relaxing, and soothing. It has the sights & sounds of the best of Maine's natural beauty: fresh air, clean water, the nature of woods, and the sounds of loons on a quiet lake.

The space
COVID-19 UPDATE: We take the public health risks of our guests and staff seriously and continue to adapt our operations to the fast changing circumstances. To allow for social distancing and the safety of all, the latest changes include:

* A private ferry ride for each party on a large pontoon boat;
* Self Service luggage handling;
* We are taking extra care to give each guest space a "cooling off" period and touch surface disinfection between reservations.
Reservations that we are accepting should be viewed with the understanding that we will be complying with all mandates by the State of Maine with as much notice to our guests as possible. In the interest of health and safety of everyone, we are currently requesting that guests who are entering Maine maintain quarantine for your stay and up to 14 days. That means the grocery store visit for supplies should be done before you enter Maine. It also means that, as has been our tradition, we will happily offer "Island Concierge Service" for any visitors in need incidentals during their island vacation.

AND NOW FOR THE FUN STUFF!

INSIDE THE OAKTAGON:

The Oaktagon Tree House on 1 Big Sustainable Island is an octagonal home that gets its name from the living Red Oak tree that grows through the middle of the home. It's a great place to enjoy a family vacation, host a gathering, or just unplug from hustle and bustle. Step inside and you will be awestruck by the sweet pine panel aroma and the incredible lake view that is a Maine tradition.

It has an open cathedral living/dining room with a fold out futon, a small breakfast table and a large dining table that seats six.

A compact and complete kitchen has all of the cooking utensils you will need to prepare meals -- just bring a cooler with your favorite food, a block of ice, and we'll provide the kitchen to get the food prep done.

A small indoor 1/2 bath adds modern convenience to the experience. It is equipped with a composting toilet and hand sink. Bathing is done either in the lake, or using the solar shower that is included.
COMING SOON! Our Latest Addition: A Hot Shower! - Summer 2021
Enjoy a hot shower when you visit 1 Big Sustainable Island! Projected to be completed in June 2021, the new building located on the north end of the island will include a community composting toilet and a shower for overnight guests that will utilize collected rainwater, be powered by humans, and heated with propane. We’re still thinking on the official name - in the running are: The Shower Shed, The Rain Locker, and Showahloo. We are excited to offer this simple convenience to make your stay more comfortable.

A small woodstove, kindling, and firewood come with the accommodations. (You can't visit Maine without at least seeing a woodstove!). Use it for cooking, creating some ambiance, or just taking the chill off a cool evening breeze.

The queen size comfy bed in the sleeping loft comes with linens, as does the futon that converts to a full size bed in the living room. Another lounging option is to linger in the indoor hammock that you can attach to the tree in the living room.

OUTSIDE THE OAKTAGON:

The large deck overlooks the canopy and Lake Annabesscook. It is perfect for grilling and enjoying an outdoor meal, bird watching, and having a firefly counting contest. There is also an outdoor fire pit, complete with plenty of firewood to enjoy a fire while enjoying an evening breeze.

The Oaktagon comes equipped with a few fishing poles and a small tackle box with an assortment of jigs, flies, and line. You are welcome to use them -- just be sure to get a fishing permit before you do so you can be on the right side of Maine's fishing laws. Annabessacook is known as a world class bass fishery -- we don't even have to stock 'em -- it's that good!

Guest access
Guests have exclusive access to the Oaktagon Tree House where they can enjoy privacy and shared access to 1 Big Sustainable Island.

There's lots to do on 1 Big Sustainable Island and (as has been the tradition for generations in the neighborhood) visitors are encouraged to stop by (so expect some company from the neighborhood on the island during daylight -- after dark, however, the island is closed to the public). Activities include:

Hiking or walking on more than a mile of trails
Relaxing under the gazebo
Swimming at Loon Point
Swinging off the rope swing at the lake's edge
Cooking over an open fire
Watching the sunset from Proposal Rock
Resting in one of the hammocks sprinkled about the island
Fishing off the dock

Other things to note
Want to vacation with your dog? The Oaktagon is pet-friendly for most of our furry friends. The dog fee is $20 per night for one, $25 for two.

During the day, dogs should be leashed as there might be others visiting the island. Off leash after dark is ok.

Cell Service:
Most cell providers register 3 bars on the island. If you have a smartphone, then you can get to the internet! There is no WiFi, but cell coverage is good. Be sure to bring back up batteries for your phone as there is no power.

Monmouth, Maine, United States

The Oaktagon Tree House at 1 Big Sustainable Island is located in Annabessacook Lake, a 1400 acre quiet lake in Central Maine. The lake has very little boat traffic, which means that a bit of privacy, good fishing, gentle paddling, and leaving the congestion of life "from away" behind are all encouraged and easy to find.

Fishing permits can be obtained on your way in at just about any local convenience store (South Monmouth Market on Route 126, for example) or right on the lake at the Augusta West Campground. Guests are welcome to bring their own boat if they so desire.
