Morne Jaloux ridge is a residential area just one mile from Fort Frederick and three miles from the historic capitol St George's. Cooled by easterly trade winds, and just 800 ft. above sea level, this location is ideal and safe. 100 yards up the road from Smithy's is the local bus stop where you can take the 10 min drive to St George's if you want to mingle with Grenadians, visit the museum or shop for local produce in the colorful market. Travel once on the bus and the driver and conductor will know your stop on the return!
Less than a mile away is Woburn where there is a lovely lookout for shore birds. In the garden are a variety of birds as well, several hummers and the spectacled thrush as well as a variety of doves. Anoli lizards are frequent visitors to the veranda as they live in the garden. They are harmless.
This lovely residential area is best suited to vacationers who like renting cars or taking taxis or waiting for local buses who seem to have their own individual time table. All buses go into St George's where a transfer bus can take you to other destinations around the island. Buses are therefore probably not very practical if you have appointments to keep.
In a rental vehicle Grand Anse beach is less than 10 minutes away, en route is Grenada Distillers, home of Clarkes Court rum as well as picturesque Hog and Calivigni islands. Within walking distance of your accommodation are village shops selling basic items. The main super-markets in Grand Anse are close to the beach and you probably will make a habit of doing your shopping there after a swim and a lime at Umbrellas Beach bar on Grand Anse beach. Venture further and you will discover Morne Rouge Beach and several restaurants selling wonderful dishes, some made with Grenada's fresh fish and (website hidden) Hartman dove sanctuary and Woburn wetlands are also en route to Grand Anse. There are several supermarkets and restaurants in St George's as well, some on the waterfront and others very close to the main bus terminal and fish market.
The local buses are privately owned seem to run on timetables of their own...if time is not an issue it is a great way to experience Grenada as a local and very inexpensive.

Had a wonderful time in Grenada, it’s such a beautiful island and the people are fantastic. I would certainly recommend Smithys Garden flat, its clean, well equipped, set in wonderful gardens and the surrounding area is quite and peaceful. I would suggest getting a car if you plan frequent trips down to the beaches and other places of interest, as it’s a little trek.
Anne the host is a fountain of knowledge about the island and her enthusiasm for it and its activities is a refreshing joy to listen to.
We contacted Anne at the last minute due to a change in our travel plans and she agreed to let us stay even though she was much busier than she likes for hosting. The gardens are beautiful and the atmosphere is very relaxing. Anne was very welcoming and friendly and available whenever we needed her. Being close to bus stops was great for us. Our kids enjoyed playing with Kayla very much!
Recently returned from a 2 week stay with Ann at Smithy's Garden. Wow...I cannot even begin to explain how wonderful this place is. Her garden is absolutely smashing, glorious and a pleasure to walk through. We prowled through it every day, morning, noon and night. Without exaggeration this is one of the, if not the, nicest most incredible gardens I have ever been in. Stunning! The flat is perfect; clean, well equipped with a decent shower, hot water and a super nice patio to hang out in; or rather hang outside as it is an outside patio with doors that open to the apartment. You feel as if you are immersed into nature with the swaying palm fronds and the birds singing delightfully to you. There are of course the little frogs that sing, the hummingbird that visits and then; typical caribbean style, barking dogs (who can stay in the caribbean without dogs?) The flat is about a 15 minute drive from town and beach with either a car, which we rented; or a bus which is a short walk up the road. We never, ever felt unsafe. We walked numerous times to the bus, through the neighborhood, and all around the hills without any trepidations. Ann and her family are a true delight, full of great stories, helpful considerations and fun! Her daughter and grand-daughter live there as well and are equally as enjoyable. A TRULY wonderful place.
Anne was a wonderful host! She arranged a taxi for us to and from the airport, she gave us a ride to town one afternoon and also gave great beach recommendations. Her place was perfect for what we needed in Grenada and very close to the bus stop. Anne was kind enough to make sure we had some snacks and fresh fruit in the refrigerator because we arrived later at night. Her garden is beautiful and waking up and seeing it was a great way to start the day. We also had freshly cut flower arrangements in each room :) Anne is a wonderful host and we would recommend staying with her if you are looking to stay in a quieter area close to St. George's. She is like the family friend you have in Grenada that you didn't even know about!
Thanks for everything Anne! We can't wait to see you and Kayla again!
I had a brilliant time at smithys garden and my hosts were great. The garden flat was comfortable and had everything I needed. I really enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the hummingbirds. :-)
I hired a car for 3 days but spent the rest of the time travelling on the local mini buses. Great value at 2.50ec to St George and an experience every time! It was easy to get down to grand Anse beach and people were really friendly.
I would thoroughly recommend staying here!
It was our pleasure to have you stay and I am delighted that you enjoyed sitting on the deck, watching the hummingbirds as they visited the heliconias in the garden. Happy to know that you had a truly Grenadian experience with the local buses and that you found it easy to get around. Look forward to having you stay again.
Best wishes for Christmas and the new year
Anne and family
Anne was a fabulous host! There are not enough ways to describe her hospitality. The apartment was clean and well kept, and located central to everywhere that we needed to be. We were greeted warmly and treated to a nice breakfast on our arrival. She was kind enough to assist in arranging a very last minute car rental although it was a busy weekend on the island and we were turned away by all the companies we called. She is obviously well known and loved in the community. A beautiful host with a big heart and a kind spirit. The gardens are breathing and the view of the landscape was well worth the stay. Kayla is sweet as pie and presented us with a seashell as a parting gift. The wifi signal was a bit unreliable but that was not a problem as we had full access from the main house. The dogs that are housed behind the unit seemed to prefer nighttime activities and slept more during the day which was the same schedule we kept!
We loved our stay at Ann's and truly appreciated her constant efforts to accommodate our every need.
Always glad to have feedback. You will be pleased to know that the WIFI issue has been resolved with a dual band range booster and extender which gives strong signal in all rooms at the (email hidden) next time you stay you will be able to check your emails in bed and have a reliable connection! The dogs do provide a level of security.
Kind regards and look forward to having you stay any time!
If you want to feel like home in Grenada, choose Anne's place!
We had a wonderful week there, and Anne and her family made it very special!
The apartment is very nit and convenient! It's located just 2 minutes walk to a bus stop which will take you to Saint George's in 15 minutes.
The first morning, we chose to have homemade breakfast cooked by Leiber... It was so good that we decided to have breakfast everyday there!!!
We also had a special evening one night because it was my uncle's 50th birthday. We bought lobsters and Leiber cooked it. We had a very nice evening with Anne, Claire and Kayla (the lovely grand daughter!). We felt like home!
Grenada is a real heaven and Anne will help you and guide you every time you need it!
Oh! And I almost forgot about the garden!! It's a super nice place where you'll find amazing flowers, fruits and birds! All of it taken care by Anne and her gardener.
My boyfriend, my brother, my uncle and I had a wonderful stay! If you love nature, adventure, sun, beaches, fruits and lovely people, you must definitely get in touch with Anne!
Have a great stay in Grenada!

Like sailing, always enjoy Carriacou. Bird watching is a new hobby as I am now a bird guide in training! Interested in learning about other cultures and tasting new foods. Love chocolate and a nice glass of wine. Can't beat eating a pineapple from the garden. Like shopping. Don't like to cook, but love to taste someone elses good meal! Have great friends who are good cooks! "Enjoy every day."
