Description

The space

Circa 1850 Cape-style house featured in March, April and May 2013 issues of This Old House magazine (see on-line "From Fixer-Upper to Refined Farmhouse" by Deborah Baldwin) and on houzz (search "Beautiful Hardworking Cape Renovation").

Second floor room w/ private bath in classic New England village, 2 miles from Dartmouth College, close to lakes and rivers, mountains, shopping, museums, theater. Walking distance to fantastic independent bookstore, post office, town green, churches and quintessential general store.

Double bed heaped with old antique quilts, hypo-allergenic pillows and 100% cotton sheets. Fluffy towels. Fresh flowers in your room. Bath has small, antique 4 ft. claw-foot tub with hand-held shower. (Please note: there is no stand-up shower.) Cable TV with premium channels. Private stair separates guest room from rest of house. Books and magazines abound.

Second sleeping place available for an additional $75 for those who prefer not to share a bed: queen-sized, high-end air mattress in studio adjacent to guest room. Airy room with high ceiling, very comfortable. Shares bath with guest room.

Excellent restaurants close by. Hiking in the Green and White Mountains is an easy drive. Other nearby attractions: Simon Pearce glass-blowing, Quechee Gorge, covered bridges, country fairs, King Arthur Flour store & cafe, fishing and Dartmouth's Hopkins Center for the Arts featuring film, concerts and art exhibits. Hanover, NH is right across the Connecticut River and has a multitude of restaurants, shopping, gelato, downtown movie theater showing current features. Five miles from the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Our very friendly Labrador Retriever adds to the atmosphere at no additional charge.

Please note that prices will be higher for Dartmouth graduation, Dartmouth Reunions and fall foliage season.

We are not handicap accessible. Room is at the top of fairly steep and narrow stair.

Guest bedroom & en suite bath.

Interaction with guests

We love getting to know our guests -- it's the real fun of Airbnb -- but if you prefer to have a romantic time with just your partner or are not a morning person and don't want to chit chat, that's okay too.

Randy and I are happy to give recommendations for restaurants, things to see, places to ski, etc.

Vermont village setting.

Getting around

There is no taxi service in the area or really any public transportation, but we are happy to pick you up at the Dartmouth Coach bus stop at the Hanover Inn, providing the timing works. Can also give you a ride to Dartmouth or DHMC if you are stuck.

There is a good door-to-door car service that can take you to and from the Manchester, NH, Boston, Hartford, CT and Burlington, VT airports. Please contact us for details.

Other things to note

The room is above the kitchen, up it's own staircase and tucked out of sight and hearing of the rest of the house. It is absolutely private, but there is no actual door. At night we will be on the other side of the house where we can't hear you and you can't hear us. (Earplugs available for late- or light-sleepers.)

As described, there is no stand-up shower in the private bathroom. This is due to the configuration of the knee wall/roof: there is no room for a full shower. The tub is a small, antique clawfoot with a nice hand-held shower. Nearly all of our guests find this a fun detail.

The house was built in 1830 when spaces were just smaller. This adds to the coziness we love. Ceilings are low in the guest room, so if you are tall, you may have to duck a bit.

Finally, in an effort to keep our prices low, we no longer offer breakfast. But we will be very happy to make you a cup of coffee or tea to help you jump-start your day!

Lovely guest room just a few minutes from the Dartmouth campus (the reason for our visit to the area). Jane promptly communicates and makes everything a breeze. Jane, Randy and Rudder are all such a pleasure! The pillows and bedding are comfortable and rival the quality of a very nice hotel. As perfectly described in the posting, the tub under the knee wall makes showering a challenge (think crouching positions - much easier to just take a bath). We thought it would be worth a stay anyway and we were not disappointed!

Truly a doll sweet and attentively decorated. I've never slept in such nice bedding....Garnet Hill/Eileen Fisher bedding, real down pillows. (I've only dreamed of Eileen Fisher bedding.) My daughter and I slept like logs. I didn't notice the early check-out (9am) when I booked, but we had an early schedule so it worked out fine. Lovely BnB dog, Rudder, is on the premises, and Jane's home is a stone's throw from Dartmouth. She even took the time to research local restaurants with vegan fare for my daughter.

Everything was great about our stay. Jane and Randy were very accommodating. Rudder the dog was a delight. Randy helped clear our car of snow in the morning which was very kind and helpful. Jane welcomed us with cookies and great advice on the area as well lovely conversation. Would definitely recommend and hope to visit for longer sometime in the future.

Terrific stay! Jane and Randy were wonderful hosts and Rudder the dog is a lover. The house has been beautifully renovated and it holds lots of interesting books and collectables. The room was well appointed and comfortable. A delightful stay all around.
