The Space

Circa 1850 Cape-style house featured in March, April and May 2013 issues of This Old House magazine (see on-line "From Fixer-Upper to Refined Farmhouse" by Deborah Baldwin) and on houzz (search "Beautiful Hardworking Cape Renovation").

Second floor room w/ private bath in classic New England village, 2 miles from Dartmouth College, close to lakes and rivers, mountains, shopping, museums, theater. Walking distance to fantastic independent bookstore, post office, bakery/gourmet foods, town green, churches and quintessential general store.

Double bed heaped with old antique quilts, hypo-allergenic pillows and 100% cotton sheets. Fluffy towels. Fresh flowers in your room. Bath has small, antique 4 ft. claw-foot tub with hand-held shower. (Please note: no regular shower.) Cable TV with premium channels. Private stair separates guest room from rest of house.

Second sleeping place available for an additional $75 for those who prefer not to share a bed: queen-sized, high-end air mattress in studio adjacent to guest room. Airy room with high ceiling, very comfortable. Shares bath with guest room.

Excellent restaurants close by. Hiking in the Green and White Mountains is an easy drive. Other nearby attractions: Simon Pearce glass-blowing, Quechee Gorge, covered bridges, country fairs, King Arthur Flour store & cafe, fishing and Dartmouth's Hopkins Center for the Arts featuring film, concerts and art exhibits. Hanover, NH is right across the Connecticut River and has a multitude of restaurants, shopping, gelato, downtown movie theater showing current features. Five miles from the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Laundry privileges. Continental breakfast included (muffins or toast, coffee/tea, fruit/juice). Books and magazines abound.

Two friendly Labrador Retrievers add to the atmosphere at no additional charge. (Earplugs available for late- or light-sleepers.)

Please note that prices will be higher for Dartmouth graduation, Dartmouth Reunions and fall foliage season.

Also, we are not handicap accessible. Room is at the top of fairly steep and narrow stair.

  • Jane was really nice to me, she also offered to pick me up at the bus station on my arrival. Unfortunately I had a health problem so I had to cancel my visit. I would definitely contact her again :)

  • Jane & Randy were wonderful hosts: kind, considerate, open, friendly; and in the morning, Jane prepared us a lovely breakfast and joined us coffee and conversation. The guest room is private and secluded, very cozy, with a nice view of the yard. I'd highly recommend their place, and certainly look forward to visiting again.

Thank you, Adam and Ashley. We will be thinking of you as the big day approaches, and scanning bookstore shelves for the debuts of your novels!

  • Jane was once again a superb host. She was welcoming and gracious, plus she provided us with great tips for moving to the upper valley. I definitely recommend staying at Jane's beautiful home!

  • I stayed with Jane for a night while visiting Dartmouth. Jane was a wonderful host and her house was beautiful and cozy. She made sure that I was settled in and had everything I needed, but was also great about giving me space and privacy. The breakfast was delicious and Jane made some of the best coffee! We even had a wonderful conversation over breakfast, after which she took the time to sit down with me and map out where I was heading. I would definitely stay with Jane again and highly recommend her place to others.

  • This is a home away from home. Not only are Jane, Randy and
the super-labs Henry and Rudder so very welcoming, but your room and
bath are designed to delight your senses: beautiful clean space and view
into the garden, wonderful fragrances in the bathroom soaps, such comfortable
bed, books of all sorts to while away the hours. Folks who have the opportunity to stay here are indeed lucky!

  • This was my first airbnb venture, and I'm afraid I may have peaked early! Think quintessential New England farm-style house with sophisticated and beautiful while charming spaces, then add a gracious but not-in-your-space host and hostess, and close proximity to the charming towns of Norwich and Hanover. Because the common spaces are largely off limits during the day while the homeowners use them, see this as somewhere between a hotel room and a bnb experience. We had breakfast one morning, and it was healthy, tasty, and beautifully laid out. The beds in both the main guest room and the studio were very comfortable and we slept well. Jane is warm and easy to communicate with, and straightforward about arrangements. We hope to stay here again!

  • I spent two days with Jane and Randy in January during a visit to Hanover. Jane and Randy were extraordinarily hospitable from start to finish - I couldn't have asked for better hosts. They made my trip comfortable, easy, and stress-free. The house is truly beautiful and in a great location. The room was very comfortable and offered plenty of privacy. To top it off, they provided a modest but wonderful breakfast each morning (along with fabulous French Press coffee). It didn't hurt to have a couple of adorable labs at my feet. They also made it very easy for me to come and go as I needed. Top notch people, top notch home, and a place I would go back to in a heartbeat. Thanks Jane and Randy!
