We spent 2 great weeks at Olga and Ubaldo's cottage, they were nice and welcoming and we enjoyed the sun, the view of the mountains and the fresh countryside air far away from the touristic Gran Canaria. Situated at the southwest side of the island, the cottage is a 1 1/2 hour drive from the airport and at least 40 minutes of them are in the mountains. It is a curvy and beautiful ride, but not for those who have a tendency for car sickness. Olga met us at a gas station on the foot of the mountain and showed us to the house, grocery shopping facilities and helped us find the very steep driveway to the cottage. The surroundings are rural and authentic. We were met by ducks, hens and a cat every morning, orange trees, figs and a lot of cacti. The neighbours and farmers who tended to the animals were friendly and provided us with oranges and lemons and the kids had a great time exploring the surroundings, climbing trees and feeding the ducks. There is a short drive to grocery shopping and to walking paths in the mountains (be aware that you have to drive to get anywhere - for us this was a bit dissapointing). Aldea de San Nicolas is close by (10 min in car) as well as Puerto de Aldea that has a small pebble beach. 45-60 minutes down the mountain to Puerto Mogan, Puerto Rico and Maspalomas. You should not miss the Cactus Park which you can see from the cottage and actually walk to along a trail behind the cottage. Travelling three couples with 5 kids the place was packed to it's maximum capacity. Olga was so kind as to have provided the house with 2 baby beds, which was a nice gesture. The house is authentic and maybe a bit smaller than we expected, but it didn’t really matter. It was very clean and a nice lady provided with fresh towels, sheets and took the garbage, bottles etc. Not all beds are super-comfy and some nights were pretty cold, so bring some warm clothes, too. The closed garden terrace with the pool, the barbecue and outside seating is the heart of the house and we spent a lot of joyful hours there. We travelled in late Feb-early March and the sun was warm on the terrace from 9.30-15 app. Olga started the heating of the pool, when we asked for it and it was great. However, the pool really needs a restauration. We used it every day but with a little caution for sharp, broken tiles. The kitchen wasn’t exactly well-equipped, but we got by. Olga was quick to come around with a stack of drinking glasses and a new kettle, when it broke. Olga and her son Ubaldo were welcoming and helpful. Ubaldo speaks english and is easy to communicate with. However, we would recommend that you brush up on your school Spanish before arrival and know a few...
We hade the most wonderful vacation in Olgas house. Partly because of spotless weather but mainly because of the lovely house and settings.
The heated pool was a true success for our children and the location in the outskirt of Aldea was perfect for outings. The house suited us with the two bedrooms on the upper floor and the two side buildings with room for our guests. In the main bedroom and in the kitschen there is a airconditioner which was great for heating during the cold nights. It was pretty cold in the other two other bedrooms so a good pajamas is strongly recommended for those sleeping in these houses :-)
We both had great help of Olga on arrival and during our stay Carmen, a neighbor was of huge help.
The sun rises over the mountains at 9.15 and sets at 17-isch. Parts of the courtyard has sun from 9.15 until lunchtime. In the afternoon and until the sun sets over the mountains the sun is on the front of the house.
The children enjoyed feeding the ducks and the freedom of being able to run out without being afraid of passing cars.
Many lovely memories of passing farmers offering oranges and other vegetables and from great local cheese and fish from the shops in Aldea.
We can strongly recommend the playa Aldea - even though it is a pebble beach it is beautiful with the sun setting over the sea and many small and ok restaurants. Passing through the tunnel you'll arrive at a more protected part of the beach with smaller parts of sand when the tide is low. Both old and young could swim with a bit of hand-holding :-)
Olga og Ubalde (her son) are very kind people and made us feel instantly welcome. Olga made us at the gas station in Puerto Mogan and led us through the winding mountain roads to the cozy house. The trip is a 45-60 minutes drive with 20/40km/hr. The trip was a bit long for us and at night we did not feel comfortable taking the trip after sunset. That meant, that we did not get to visit as many sites, as we had hoped. The driveway to the house (extremely steep and narrow) also requests an experienced driver.
As Ubalde knows, we did not have the best experience in the house. The toilet closest to the living room did not function and we had to pass the court yard or go outside and upstairs, which normally wouldn't be a problem, but since the island these days experienced a historic downpour, it was quite uncomfortable for the youngest and the oldest in the family. We also struggled a bit with cockroaches and flies, but I guess that is part of life on the country side.
We loved the beautiful surroundings and the quiet and non-touristy part of the island. I had hoped, that there would be more official trails in the area to hike, but it was quite difficult to find. I also did not feel safe walking on the side of the road (no sidewalks, many turns) with my daughter, thus everything we did, was by car.
We spent a lot of time by the beautiful pool (also during rain), so the 10€/day for heating is well worth the investment during winter months.
We have many good memories from this lovely cottage, but do to several bad misfortunes (rain, malfunctions, 1h mountain drive, etc.) we did not have the most comfortable stay and decided to leave a few days early (which Ubalde reimbursed). I also would not recommend the house for more than six people. Even though it sleeps many, seating is a bit of a challenge.
Although we had our struggles with the beautiful old cottage, we absolutely enjoyed that part of the island and the court yard of the house. We have many good memories from Olgas house!
I regret that you have had a bad luck with weather in Gran Canaria. There was a strong storm during your stay but in Gran Canaria is not normal.Normally the weather is perfect with a blue sky. I hope to see you in your future holidays on my property and you enjoy with a good weather.
Olga and Ubaldo
We had a fantastic holiday at Olga's cottage. The property is spacious, spotlessly clean and full of character. Our two small children loved the pool and the family of ducks on the pond next door. The neighbours were lovely and helped us out when our toddler shut herself in the house and we needed another key, pronto! Olga also kindly met us on route to guide us to the house when we arrived.
The neighbourhood is ok, but we did find this part of the island quite remote and the mountainous terrain meant visits to other parts of Gran Canaria a bit of a mission on winding roads. Luckily we could alternate days out with chilling at the house, maybe popping out to Aldea beach and the little cafe there by the water. If we could have carried this house a little further south it would've been perfect!
We stayed for a week in the lovely cottage of Olga Maria. The house was spotlessly clean and has all amenities. There are a several bedrooms (two around the little (heated!) pool and two upstairs), which allows for enough privacy if you're travelling with a smaller group. The view from the terrace is beautiful. The kitchen is well supplied. The house is not very centrally located in the village, so a car is definitely necessary to do grocery shopping and explore the area, as most of the roads in the area don't have sidewalks. The only drawback was that there were quite a lot of flies. All windows have insect screens however, and there's an extra screen that you can close around the terrace which is very helpful at night. Olga was very friendly, and communication with her son Ubaldo ran smoothly. Olga met us at the mirador and guided us to the house, which is very handy as it would have been difficult to find it on our own. I would recommend staying here if you don't mind using the car a lot for exploring.
We had a very nice time in Olga's house and especially the pool was popular among the children. Olga's son, Ubaldo, replied quickly every time we wrote him and Olga herself was very nice and friendly. When we had a problem with the booking, Ubaldo helped us find a hotel. They were very flexible and everything was 'no problem'. We were very happy with our stay.
We had a completely wonderful time at Olga's place... It's a really intriguing villa in a beautiful location... Olga met us near Puerto de Mogan after our drive from the airport and guided us home.. Not only that, she then took one of our party off to locate supermarkets and the beach...
We had no contact during the week, but we did have Olga's telephone number, and that of Ubaldo, her son, who speaks English...
In short, a lovely, tranquil discovery, and we would certainly return...
Thank you, Olga and Ubaldo for all you did before and during our stay to make it so lovely and wonderful...
