An unusually beautiful room, once a grape press area and part of an old farm house which is set on a steep mountain slope, surrounded by woods and terraces. The area is ideal for walkers, nature lovers and bird watchers. Andros has become famous for its walking trails, three of which start from Arni. The room maintains warmth out of the summer months due to the thick walls. Heating can also be provided. Kitchen and shower/toilet (with hot water) just next door, with all neccessary amenities.

The space
This room was originally a grape press area in the lower part of a three hundred year old farmhouse. The owner lives on the upper floor and the room is at the far end of the lower floor. It’s called the ‘Magic Room’ because of its very special charm. The original shape of the room has not been changed in any way, it has just been ‘done up’. There are two single beds in the room, one actually in the area where the grapes were stamped and one in the main area. Chairs and tables can be used either for an inside meal or relaxing. The shower and WC are next to the room and the kitchen next door again. A table and chairs in the kitchen area can be used for an outside meal, surrounded by flowers and a view of the mountain opposite. The kitchen has 2 rings for cooking, and there is a fridge and an electric kettle in the main room. The bathroom includes a shower with hot and cold water and W.C. Both the bathroom and kitchen areas are basic but clean and adequate.

Where you’ll be

Arni, Egeo, Greece

We are at approximately 500m above sea level, and set on the slopes of Mount Petalon, Andros’ highest mountain, so do bring some warm clothing for the evening.

The 'Magic Room' is in the grounds of a large property called ‘Magic Mountain’ in the village of Arni. Arni is a mountain village set on the slopes of Mount Petalon, the highest peak of the Kouvara range which stretches across the island of Andros. Andros is the second largest island of the Cyclades islands, which sit in the middle of the Aegean Sea. Because of its underground springs Andros has an abundance of water and is one of the greenest of the Cycladic islands, greatly adding to its supreme beauty.

Recently Andros has become known internationally for the high standard of its walking routes. An organization called ‘Andros Routes’, together with the help of many volunteers, set the goal of clearing the old mule tracks which crisscross the island, giving the walker access to otherwise inaccessible parts of the island and a glimpse into the way of life of our recent ancestors. Recently ‘Andros Routes’ received an award from the European Ramblers Association for the high standard, maintenance and marking of their routes, including a route which is 100 kilometres long. Only one other place in Greece has been given this award and only 20 others in Europe. For much more information their site is www.androsroutes.gr.
The inhabitants of Arni are still living a life many years behind the ‘modern’ world. Some still use donkeys, horses or mules as their mode of transport. Local traditions are maintained and knowledge of technology and the digital world is limited! The slopes of Mount Petalon are wooded with planes, oaks, maples, figs, mulberry trees, walnut trees, apple trees, chestnuts and so on. In winter and springtime there are waterfalls and small streams and pools even in high summer. There are several walks which start from Arni leading the hiker through exceptionally beautiful scenery, inaccessible except for those on foot.

The area is perfect for bird watching. Buzzards wheel overhead and the mountain slopes are full of wild flowers in the spring and the sound of bird song. Arni is actually part of a protected wild life area which stretches over the middle and eastern side of the island. Four endangered bird species are known to inhabit this island. They are the Bonelli’s Eagle, the Eleanora’s Falcon, the Audouin’s Gull and the Mediterranean Shag. Efforts are being made to help the survival and presence of these birds.
