A peaceful getaway awaits you at the "Acorn" in Richland County, WI, the "center of it all" in the Driftless region. The cozy, custom designed and built "Acorn" features a queen size Murphy bed, mini kitchen, and desk area inside, and wood deck, fire ring, and charcoal grill outside. You'll be near some of the best kayaking, hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing opportunities anywhere in the Midwest. Your stay helps support our nonprofit, Renewed Hope. See below for more details.

The Acorn is a 180 square foot, one room round cabin. Located on our property along the Pine River in rural Richland County, Wisconsin, it's a quiet escape for nature lovers, perfect for a couples getaway spot or solo retreat. Richland County is located in the rugged limestone hills of the "Driftless" region, a place that was not touched by the last glaciers that covered the Midwest. Our area is an outdoors lover's dream, with rolling hills, clear cold streams (miles of class A trout streams!), and peace and quiet.

The cabin is a yurt-style lodging and includes:

*Kitchenette with microwave, coffee maker, toaster, electric hot plate, sink, mini fridge, and all dishware
*Fold down "Murphy" style queen size bed
*Small desk for reading, writing, or working
*Compost toilet
*Wood deck with picnic table
*Charcoal grill
*Fire ring
*WiFi (We are on rural broadband so WiFi can sometimes be spotty)

In the warmer months, there is running water (cold only) in the sink. There is an electric kettle for warming water. In cold months we supply an urn of water for use in the sink. In warmer months you will have access to our outdoor shower. A pass to our local recreation center is offered in the colder months - this gives our guests access to the indoor pool, sauna, whirlpool, and shower facilities.

If you've ever wanted to experience a "tiny house", this is the place for you!

Staying with us supports our nonprofit, Renewed Hope / Esperanza Renovada, which assists those living with or recovering from cancer to find renewed hope to move forward in their lives. Ask us for full information on the project during your stay.

Guest access
You will have the entire one room cabin to yourself. Feel free to roam the property!

Other things to note
Our area is a haven for nature lovers. World class trout streams, biking on our rural roads and bike trails, miles of hiking, snowshoeing, and cross country ski trails, hunting, and kayaking are all nearby. We work with a local kayak/canoe outfitter to help arrange kayaking if you'd like - send us a message for more information. Shuttle service to the beginning and from the end of your kayak trail is available. We'll send you a list of things to do in the area shortly before your stay.

My work: Pine River Woodcraft/Silver Beach Sea Glass
Most useless skill: I'm an expert speller
My husband and I enjoy peaceful, off-the-beaten-path places. We like to do most everything for ourselves, and we put ourselves into everything we do. When you stay with us, you aren't just renting a room, you're sharing our dream come true. We are both artisans. Dennis makes anything and everything out of wood, from small boxes to entire homes. His most beautiful creations are hardwood music stands, which you could almost call sculptures. I make jewelry from sea glass which I find on beaches on Puerto Rico. I am also a singer/songwriter/guitar player (contemporary folk is my favorite!). We live in the beautiful, hilly Driftless Region of southwestern Wisconsin (the only part of the Midwest U.S. untouched by the last glaciers), and have a 2 bedroom cabin in the mountains of Puerto Rico, in the midst of coffee country. We designed and built of our three cabins, and they are all "polyurts", a term Dennis coined for these circular structures, so staying with us is really an experience that is "outside the box"! We love to travel to new places, but also return to Puerto Rico several times each year. We have hosted 18 exchange students from all over the world, have traveled to Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Canada, and the Caribbean, love biking, hiking, and are certified SCUBA divers. We're animal lovers, too (especially big silly yellow labs and our Jack Russell Terrier mix who adopted us in Puerto Rico!). I speak English as well as some French and some Spanish, with sprinkles of German thrown in for good measure! I love to cook, so if you stay with us in Wisconsin you might just get a great meal as an added bonus! Our hosting style is as involved or as "hands off" as you like--you choose! We hope you will enjoy your stay with us. We look forward to meeting you!
