Beautiful and walkable

Guests say this area is scenic and it’s easy to get around.
The Stables is a luxurious 5 Star Gold Award self catering holiday cottage for two adults, situated on the edge of the historic Cotswold town of Malmesbury: a Traditional Cotswold stone building, beautifully renovated for modern comfort.

The space
The Stables is a traditional Cotswold stone building which has been completely renovated using traditional methods and materials, in keeping with its Grade II listing. The exposed oak lintels and naturally contoured stone walls are complemented by the contemporary furnishings and decoration which aim to provide every modern comfort.

The Stables accommodation comprises an open plan living /dining room and kitchen area on the ground floor, with a downstairs bathroom with a roll-top bath and over-bath shower. The stairs lead up to a galleried bedroom with king-size bed under the eaves, made up with Egyptian cotton bedlinen and a Hungarian goose down duvet (a microfibre duvet is available on request).

The kitchen is impressively equipped with gas hob, electric oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washer/dryer and practically every implement you could need.

Our welcome trays are legendary - all guests arrive to a delicious home-made Aga-baked cake, soft drinks, fresh coffee, eggs and milk.

A glazed door leads out to the Stables' own private patio area, where you can enjoy a glass of wine or a candlelit evening meal under the stars.

We very much look forward to hearing from you soon, and sharing this wonderful part of the Cotswolds with you.

Guest access
The Stables is hired for exclusive use by yourselves. However if you are visiting with another couple, then consider hiring both The Coach House and The Stables at the same time. Enquire for more details.

Other things to note
Our aim is to make our luxury self-catering accommodation in Malmesbury the most perfect relaxing romantic cottage for two. We aim to provide that little bit extra in The Stables. When you arrive, you will be greeted with a welcome tray laden with home-made Aga-baked cake from The Rookery kitchen and a variety of treats including eggs (from our own hens during the laying season!), fresh ground coffee and soft drinks.

All the main internet grocery providers (Ocado, Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda etc) deliver to The Stables at The Rookery, and if you book your delivery slot for the morning of your arrival, we will be very happy to unpack your shopping for you in advance of your arrival. Please contact us to arrange.

We provide a selection of luxury Faith in Nature toiletries for our guests, as well as fluffy white towels and extra-long bathrobes, all from The White Company.
Free wi-fi access is provided, along with full hi-definition FreeSat TV and Blu-ray/DVD player.

If you have a baby, you may wish to take advantage of our babysitting service to enjoy an evening out. Please contact us for further details.

Neighborhood highlights

Malmesbury boasts a surprising array of attractions, all of which are an easy walk from The Stables at The Rookery:

The highlight of any stay in Malmesbury must be a visit to its beautiful Abbey. The Abbey dates back to the 7th century and has a rich history. It was the setting for Monk Eilmer attempt at flight in 1010 (unfortunately unsuccessful). While strolling through Birdcage Walk and the Abbey graveyard, see if you can spot the grave of Hannah Twynnoy, supposedly the first person to be killed by a tiger in England.

The Malmesbury River Walk, along which one can meander (!) to view the town from an unusual and revealing perspective, and visit some of the town's historic features such as Daniel's Well and the Sluice Gates. The walk can be joined at several points but is worth doing completely to see some of the river's wildlife... swans, coot and possibly kingfisher and pike... as well as working farmland and the surrounding countryside... all whilst being within a few minutes of tea and scones or a ploughman's lunch in the town if, or rather, when, needed.

The Athelstan Museum, situated in Malmesbury's Town Hall, will provide the visitor with the historic background to the town, from its Neolithic beginnings as a fort in 2,500BC through to the present day. (Free entry)
