A few words about Owl Tree cabin to help you decide if you might want to stay here. One spring day, we walked what seemed like every inch of our property here on Navarro Ridge Road. We kept coming back to this small canyon. It was the light, but also an ineffable feeling that we had. I remember just sitting there quietly watching the undulating lacy green patterns change as the morning sun made its way through the trees. This was the canyon where we would hear the owls calling in the evening. This was where we would build.
Probably, if you love Las Vegas, you most likely would not like it here. And if you love Deetjen's Big Sur Inn, you would be more inclined to like it here. It is similar to Deetjen's, rustic and natural merging with nature, but dissimilar, in that the Big Sur Inn is most always full to capacity, so you’re in close proximity to people. Here you have privacy, a retreat from the world.
The Owl Tree cabin has its own level driveway; it takes less than a minute to walk from where you park to the cabin. We live on the far side of the property. All that you might hear at night will be the breeze in the top branches of the redwoods, and perhaps frogs and the owls.
Every spot on Earth has its own unique energy and the cabin and the small canyon it was built in are conducive to creative energy, to the creative mind, at work or play.
The cabin is also a place for intimacy—hopefully more than just a place to sleep while you enjoy the coast, this place is designed to become part of your experience here.
The oak table was the idea the cabin was built around—you can sit there, draw, write or daydream, warmed by the wood burning stove, and let your imagination germinate like the wild orchids in the canyon.
We are located about four and a half miles inland from Pacific Coast Highway, just beyond reach of summertime wind and fog. When it is cold and wet on the coast it is usually beautiful and warm here, summer tempered by the coastal marine layer. So you can enjoy the sunshine and enjoy the coast, without being stuck in the fog. Closest market, post office and gas are 7 miles from the cabin.
Some of the best beaches, hiking trails, places to dive and kayak are between here and Elk, and of course the historic and picturesque village of Mendocino is about 13 miles away. A wine tasting trip to the magnificent Anderson valley is within 30 minutes.
The Owl Tree cabin comes with its own picnic table and umbrella in a small meadow, next to redwood trees: a perfect place for a picnic.
Regardless of where you decide to stay, we hope you have a great time. It is hard to imagine a world in trouble when you are here. The meadows, the forests, and the pristine ocean seem timeless.
We look forward to sharing this retreat with those who seek harmony and proximity to nature's moods.

This was a fantastic getaway from the city! The cabin is in a wonderful, secluded area surrounded by trees and fresh air and was the perfect place to get away from it all.
Even though the purpose of our trip was to 'unplug' it's still really nice to not have to make a special trip (to get signal) to arrange our next rental car—there was good enough internet connection when needed (wifi) to handle things and then unplug again.
You will absolutely fall in love with this gem of a cabin! Throw a couple of logs into the fireplace, make some tea in the gorgeous Le Creuset kettle, cozy up on the loveseat with your sweetheart on one side and a book on the other. Wake up to the most amazing natural light and clean air nature can offer. Eat breakfast (Karen brought us fresh farm eggs) on the deck and listen to roosters crow and bees buzz. Wild daffodils were in full bloom while we visited and Karen was so thoughtful to prepare a beautiful bouquet for us. At night, uncork some wine, cook some dinner, listen to some music (or unplug completely), and enjoy this perfect little sanctuary. We had an amazing time; Karen is the most thoughtful host a visitor could wish for!
We were incredulous reading all the 5 star ratings for Karen and Will's Owl Tree Cabin. I made it my mission to be the first in a long list of glowing reviews to be able to point out something, ANYTHING negative about the cabin. I can not. Just perfect and classy and cozy and beautiful. Note the nearby parks offer incredible hiking, check out Van Damme State Park.
Thank you Karen and Will!
Karen and Will's cabin is nothing less than sanctuary. I can't imagine a more perfect place to bring in the New Year. We came looking for a relaxing and rejuvenating time. We left feeling so incredibly fulfilled and rested, it was hard to leave. We have enjoyed the cabin twice now and we hope to be fortunate to stay again. Karen and Will's warmth is reflected in this jewel of a place. Karen does a great job of checking in with us and making sure all our needs are met while also leaving us the space to enjoy the deep quiet of this nest in the redwoods. Thank you for an amazing experience once again!
This place really is the stuff of fairytales. We will be returning to be sure!
We began our honeymoon in this delightful little cabin, and we couldn't have chosen a more perfect space. We honestly can't think of a single amenity that was missing - we stayed four nights in that cozy bed, cooked breakfast every morning, and had every supply we needed. The attention to detail is incredible here. And Karen and Will even left us some treats - a great bottle of local organic wine, some chocolate, and a bowl of fruit.
Even though we ended up with the flu for our entire stay, we were delighted to stay indoors and ended up having a perfectly magical week.
We hope to be back soon, if not for a quick visit then for our first anniversary!
In my opinion, nothing beats waking up to the smell of bacon in the pan, the warmth of a burning wood stove, and the sound of coffee brewing...There's no better place to have breakfast than out in the back deck amongst the trees, and no better backdrop while eating than the sunlight piercing through the thick morning fog between the tree branches. My boyfriend and I were able to have all that and more in the Owl Tree Cabin, and we can't thank Karen and Will enough for being such welcoming and available hosts!
Peaceful, cozy, and private...a winter weekend in this cabin really made it feel like Christmas. If you're looking at this listing, chances are you're probably not looking for "just a place to crash." You're going to want to spend as much time in this cabin as you can. So bring the boardgames, books, creative projects...cook all your meals...be prepared to relax, get inspired, and be productive...whatever the reason, you're going to love it.
Words cannot describe how wonderful our weekend was. Karen and Will have really thought of everything to make you feel comfortable even in the cold winter months...and the craftsmanship of this place is impeccable—huge thumbs up! We will definitely be back, perhaps in the Summer!
Karen and Will were fantastic hosts! They really catered to our every need, and had a bottle of wine waiting for us upon arrival with a cute welcome note. We arrived on a rainy, cold Friday afternoon, and Karen and Will made sure to show us every form of heat that could be turned on to make the cabin cozy. They even brought us some extra firewood and oranges to ensure our comfort. This past weekend was colllld in the Bay Area and in Mendocino, but the cabin was amazingly warm, and such a great place to chill out, read a book, cozy up by the fire, and drink some wine. I would recommend Karen and Will's place in any season!
We only had the ability to stay for 2 nights at Karen and Will's hideaway.
But that is exactly what it was. The cabin is amazing, right from where you park your car, and walk the small trail down to the hidden cabin, you feel like you are in another world!
Karen and Will are great hosts and met us on arrival to take us to the cabin and explain where everything was.
The perfect size for 2 people, we thoroughly enjoyed the fireplace and the treats left for us, including some great wine, home grown fruit and chocolate.
We took a trip to Elk to grab some supplies, about 20 mins drive.
The cabin is such a magical place, one where you can truly stop and relax.
Highly recommend it to anyone visiting the region, but next time I will be sure to stay longer, perhaps check out the wineries around.
Thanks again Karen and Will.
Everything about this experience was just great. The cabin is beautiful, very clean and well kept. If you want peace and quiet, this is the place to go. Karen was a wonderful host, she even had a bottle of wine waiting for us upon our arrival. I look forward to coming here again.
