The Space

Experience authentic, Balinese life. The Payogan Homestay Villa is located within our traditional, Balinese family compound, a 20 minute walk away from Ubud. The villa is spacious, in the traditional Balinese style. Situated at the back of the compound, overlooking a rice field and tropical plantation, the villa offers more privacy and space. However, you will still wake up to the traditional sounds of Bali and experience the essence of staying in a Balinese village.

The space includes a full kitchen and dining room, three bedrooms, an indoor living space, and a large terrace. The open-air bathroom includes a tub and shower with hot water only a turn-of-a-tap away.

Living in a Balinese family compound means that you will have many friendly, neighbors. The compound is home to a large extended family, all of whom are very involved in traditional Balinese life, and committed to our village ceremonies, many of which take place in our family temple. We welcome you to participate if you choose. In fact, we encourage our guests to join us to get the true feeling of Balinese culture. We can always help you through the experience and provide the traditional wear.

As a licensed tour guide by profession, I can provide custom guided tours according to your interests and needs. We also provide airport transfer and local transportation at a very reasonable rate - we are only a call away.

Other highlights:
- Longer stays enjoy a significantly reduced room rate.
- Breakfast and/or other meals can be provided on request for minimal cost.
- We can arrange laundry pick-up and delivery at very reasonable rates.

If there is anything else you need, just let us know. We want your stay with our family to be memorable.

  • What a fantastic experience staying at the Payogan Homestay Villa in Ubud. I stayed here with a friend and we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience of participating in the daily life of the family compound. If you are looking for a cultural experience plus accommodation, then Payogan Homestay is the perfect place. Relaxed, friendly, supportive and fun are a few words to describe the environment. We learnt so much about Balinese culture from our stay with Ketut's family. This is also a great location if you prefer to be located away from the touristy focused Ubud centre, but close enough for regular visits into the hurly burly of Ubud central. I am already planning my return visit to Payogan.

  • We had a good experience in Payogan homestay, as you can get close to the authentic Balinese life. There's a really friendly and helpful atmosphere from the people living here, so one can soon feel right at home.
It was interesting to witness the daily ongoings of people here, and we also had the chance to partake in some ceremonies that took place in the community while we were there.
The house we stayed in had a private location in the far end of the compound which was nice.
There is some 5 - 10 minutes drive from the homestay to Ubud center, but on the road there are many restaurants and galleries.
So definately a recommendable place to stay in Ubud.

  • My family of 5 had a wonderful stay at the Payogan villa. Ketut and his family are wonderful hosts and were very accommodating with arranging taxis, laundry and early morning milk needs. The villa looks just like it does in the pictures. My young children had so much fun exploring the family compound and seeing all the animals.

  • Very authentic place. The territory of villas likes a secret garden smothered in flowers and green. Soul is resting there. The house is made of natural materials; it’s so good to change concrete blocks of big cities to something ambient. Local nights are filled with thousands of strange sounds and scents. The true inwardness. Relax. Absolute humidity. The night hot shower under the stars, when you almost bathed in moonlight… It is that I'll be missing in the busy urban life. Thanks to Ketut and his hospitality. He is very kindly host and keeps a good house. And the big humorist)))) Ubud is doubtless the place where you must return.

  • Coming from a neighboring country, my family and I didnt have to travel far for our short vacation to Bali. Having experienced other parts of Bali previously, Ubud was our destination of choice this time around. We wanted to experience Bali with its distinct culture, tradition, people, and unique sense of food...and we found it all in Ketut!

Firstly, Ketut's listings on airbnb were extremely reasonable - all the amenities you'd need at a hotel, at a fraction of the price. Comfortable beds, internet connection, fully functioning kitchen, heated water, even a hairdryer were all readily available.

Secondly, Ketut was extremely helpful. Even before visiting him at Payogan Homestay, we corresponded multiple times via email and all our logistics were taken care off - from airport transit, to dining at local hidden gems, to giving us a tour of Ubud town, Ketut made sure we felt right at home.

Thirdly, Ketut gave us a sneak peak into the Balinese way of life - simple yet amazingly self sufficient. He explained to us the history, tradition and culture of Balinese life - from the significance of art museums to the history behind the infamous Nyepi festival, where 30 feet tall ogoh-ogoh roam the streets of Ubud on the eve of the festival. This is a sight to be reckoned with, never to be forgotten.

Finally, Ketut made us feel like family. We were greeted with a warm smile and a genuine hug when we first arrived, and the same when we left. He introduced us to his family, all of which were living in the same village, all of which had the same infectious smile as Ketut.

I'd definitely recommend Ketut's listings to anyone visiting Bali. Sincere, humble and ever ready to help, Ketut is the epitome of what a host should be, anywhere in the world. No wonder airbnb awarded Ketut the Certificate of Excellence in Hospitality for being Bali's Top Host in March 2014! Well done Ketut, when you visit Malaysia, let us know and we'll return the hospitality you've shown us! :)

  • ٍEverything was perfect about staying at Payogan Villa. The traditional house, very charming, spacious and cozy. You dont really want to go anywhere else! You have lots of space to relax and lounge and fully equipped kitchen to cook. It was very clean and someone came to clean every day. The village with local residents only is quite an interesting and welcoming place to stay. Ketut himself is even more than welcoming! You can ask him anything and he is always ready for a friendly chat. It was very nice of him to invite us to watch his family ceremony. By the way, he knows a very good masseur though slightly more expensive that average.
My review doesnt really do the justice, but i just want to say THANK YOU very much, Ketut!

  • Ketut and his family are very friendly and happy to help anytime. His daily visits to our house were welcomed as it gave us a chance to discuss Bali life, family life, and a variety of other topics. If you are looking for REAL Bali, this is a wonderful place to start.
    House is clean
    Beds are comfortable
Chickens are noisy.. but what chickens aren't.

  • I couldn't have dreamed of a better place to stay in Bali! If you are interested in seeing the real Bali, being a part of a community and meeting some beautiful people then stay at Payogan for sure. I had an unfortunate experience of losing my ATM card upon arrival and I was so grateful for the love and care I felt from this community especially Ketut who made sure I was fed and happy. He also took me around touring the area which I highly recommend. There are so many beautiful temples and dances and ceremonies all the time. The villas are gorgeous with or ate artwork and beautiful green plants everywhere. All in all I give payogan homestay 5 stars and I will most definitely be back
