This listing is for a well renovated, minimally furnished 3 bedroom 2 bath former fishing cabin that was erected in the 1930s by a Quebecois fisherman. The original structure was salvaged after the Long Island Express hurricane of 1938 from the town initially on the bay side. Only as big as the living room and kitchen at first, the cabin expanded with his family to the house that stands today, along with a cabin, a cottage (also listed here and available for large parties and events) and a barn. The grounds are shared and private.

The décor is a mix of bought and found objects and are we have collected on our adventure and pieces custom made by our maker friends and us. The compound has different levels, lots of lawn space and we are always working to improve the landscape.

All but one room in the house have open ceilings with visible rafters, the most dramatic being in the living area with its salvaged beams and column. There are lots of window to allow in light and cool the house in the summer.

Here’s what you can expect:

* Convenient and easy access to the beach, the bay the town and stores, restaurants and train or bus station.

* Our vibe is pretty relaxed and respectful of our neighbors, but we've made a place for people to hang out, meet new people and have fun or unplug

* Spacious living space with plenty of sitting and a large dinning table

* A well stocked kitchen with plenty of counter space, a large farm sink and dishwasher, a fridge with icemaker, a gas range with oven and everything you need to make great meals of the fresh produce and seafood and there are usually basic cooking ingredients too.

*Private bedrooms with queen beds with high density mattresses. Linens, pillows and towels are provided and there are extras in the hallway closet.

*A private deck with table and chairs.

* There are 3 daybeds in the living room for additional guests that are good for short stays.

*Direct access to Fort Pond via stairs. We have canoes with oars, rafts, and life vests. The fresh waters of the lake are ideal; much warmer and calmer than the ocean and pristine since much of its shoreline is protected and wild and no motor boats are allowed.

*A fire pit and portable grill for guests to use.

*The master bedroom is en suite, with a WC and Victorian shower. The room has direct access to the side deck. There’s a dresser and armoire and seating too and a work desk- if you must.
*The front bedroom is close to the bathroom and living space and a great place to hear bird song in the warmer months.
*The porch bedroom has a large closet and sliding doors to a narrow deck, one of the best sunning spots on the compound.

*The shared bathroom also has a Victorian shower over a deep cast iron tub. Both bathrooms in the house have raw cement walls and marble floors.

*Wifi internet through out the property.

*Off street parking.

We are pretty laid back, private but accessible should you need anything or have questions. When we are around and the weather is good we usually make a fire for everyone.

The Neighborhood

Shepherd's Neck is a really nice part of Montauk, it's quiet yet convenient to most everything and our place is right on the the water. You can walk to Ruschmeyers, Surf Lodge, Navy Beach, the beach the bay, and the town.

  • This house was perfectly located, walking distance to many of my favorite Montauk haunts - Sole East, Rushmeyers, Navy Beach, the Surf Lodge as well as to town. We also enjoyed the spaciousness and decor, it's modern yet character filled. I would absolutey stay again. In fact I could happily live there. Highly recommend.

  • I've been coming to Montauk for years, and this was the best trip ever, mostly because of how awesome the Fort Pond House is. The house looks even better in person than in photos. Each room is amazing and has its own perks. There are windows everywhere, which makes it super breezy and chill. Jason and Frida were very friendly, laid back hosts.

Protip: If you stay here and don't have a beach pass, you can park at the public lot next to the IGA in town and go to Kirk Beach. You can also call the Pirate Cab (highly recommended, you'll see why when they come pick you up) and they will take you to Ditch Plains or another beach of your choice.

Big pluses are the firepit, the grill, and the canoes that you can take out on Fort Pond! Looking forward to coming back for another stay next year. :)

  • The house was great. Looks better in person than in the photos! Great location super close to town. Took the kayaks over to Surf lodge! Everything was clean and in order. The hosts were very responsive, super helpful, and very easy going. Bring soap/shampoo!
    Thanks again!

  • This was our second stay….this time in the big house. Once again everything was great! The house was spotless and beautifully decorated. We loved having the electric stoves in the rooms as it was chilly out. Frida brought us some wine and we had a wonderful weekend! Would go back again.

  • Simply Perfect.
This type of bohemian modern place you hope you are bound for when you are looking to relax and get away from the city. Our hosts were beyond helpful and have created an amazing sanctuary in the best part of Montauk. The lake was great to just stare at birds and fish jumping. We hopped in the canoe and went across the pond to the surf lodge. We had a fire in the outdoor fire pit. The interior was warm and inviting when we arrived, the house is clean and has impeccable tasteful decor. My son (6) was in heaven too. The train, beach and village are close and an easy walk from this property.

Yes! Rent this place ASAP before the secret is out.

  • A great, trendy house to spend the weekend with friends, including a large kitchen. Frida and Jason were very welcoming. An easy 15-20 minute walk into town and a $4-5 cab ride from the train.

  • The house is perfect. The location is perfect. Jason and Frida are wonderful hosts. I could not recommend this house more highly, except to say that you should rent the cottage too.

I stayed at the house for a weekend with friends and we already have plans to return to rent both the house and the cottage. Truly not one complaint about anything.

  • Beautiful, stylish home with chic DIY touches on the gorgeous Fort Pond. The owners are incredibly friendly, casual, and welcoming. We canoed on the pond, made a fire in the fire pit, and cooked a big dinner in their incredibly functional kitchen. Short drive to town, supermarket, and beach. Would love to come back and stay again!

  • The fort pond house and cottage were perfect for our group - very comfortable and beautiful. We loved the decor inside and the personal touches - you can tell this property is well loved and cared for. Lovely yard with picnic tables and lots of room to enjoy the sunshine. The bikes were a great bonus! Thanks for making our Montauk trip so comfortable and memorable. We hope to come back soon!

We are Jason and Frida and we live in Brooklyn and Montauk year round. We love to travel, collect treasure, eat street food and meet people who make things. Our love for DIY and repurposing old things is clearly visible through out our place. After spending many summers in Montauk we came to love it here and fell in love with Shepherd's Neck and this compound, and in spite of the fact that it was neglected for many years and falling apart we made it our first home. We are slowly filling it with things we love, bought and found on our adventures near and far. We cleared a lot of junk from the yard and making a garden that we share with a lot of birds and bees! It's thoughtfully furnished and well appointed. We hope you will find respite here and enjoy the retreat as we do.
