Blue Room Downtown Mansion

House - Private room · Rio Grande Street, Austin, TX 78701, United States

The Space

Private room in a 1904 historic downtown mansion. Hardwood floors, claw-foot bath tub, walls and ceilings covered in artwork.

Two blocks from 6th Street, you are in easy walking distance to all SXSW events and Austin's downtown nightlife--the Whole Foods flagship store is 4 blocks away. This is a former governor's mansion and is in the heart of all things downtown. You're surrounded by other gorgeous mansions, but this is one of the few that hasn't been turned into lawyer's offices.

The room you'll be staying in is the gallery (the Blue Room) in the house. It has two 10-foot wood paneled doors that slide together to provide privacy, but the main living room and porch area are in sound range. The bathroom is down the hallway and is used only by occasional guests. Please note that a 6-ft clawfoot tub is the only option--there is no shower.

This is an incredibly unique house and you would be in the mix of the household--the owner of the house has an apartment on the first floor (separate from where you are staying). Three additional apartments are located in the upper floors, so the house can be quite lively.

While you can lose yourself looking at all the artwork on the walls, be aware that you should be ok with interacting with others. The comings and goings (email hidden)d-in house make this room around an active area until about 10pm, when it will generally be quiet. If you want an experience that provides access to one of Austin's most unique residences and eclectic residents in an early-1900s mansion, this is for you.

The bed options are two twin Tempurpedic mattresses and/or a double bed (futon). Sheets and towels will be provided.

Guest Access

You will have access to your bedroom (the Blue Room), the bathroom, the living room, and the kitchen.

Getting around

If you bring a car, you'll have a free parking space just behind the house. This is a nice perk as parking around downtown has become hard-to-find and expensive.

You don't need a car to stay here if you want to experience just "downtown Austin." If you fly to Austin-Bergstrom airport, you can take the Capital Metro bus (Airport Flyer) that will drop you off at 4th & Congress, about a 6-block walk to the house. Cabs are also easily available, both to and from the airport, and around Austin. Pedicabs and
downtown bicycle rentals are other options, but you'll be in easy walking distance to much of downtown.

  • Blair's home was welcoming and wonderful! What a treasure - both his fantastic home (or AKA art museum) and Blair himself. What a gracious and intriguing host. I greatly enjoyed the brief amount of time I was able to spend in the home and with Blair.
I definitely found the downtown Austin gem!! I will definitely stay at Blair's on my next trip to Austin!

  • Blair owns one of the most remarkable places in Austin in which we felt very much at home. Paitings all over the place (even the ceiling!) and you never grow tired of looking at them.

The location is absolutely great (within walking distance of basically everything) and Blair did everything to make us feel comfortable.

    Highly recommended!

Fun-loving, art collecting man in social hive, still interested in life and building a space. I think of my house as a stoner museum.
