Galkadawala originally displayed the typical Dry Zone characteristics in which it is situated, generated by the slash and burn mode of “Chena Cultivation” previously adopted by the rural peasantry. Over many decades the resultant infertile soil supported only scrub jungle. At the outset this was the natural environment of the site.

The architect of the project, Vijitha Basnayaka however with his unerring “inner-eye” has set out to transform this dreary landscape to the forest covered glades and park lands of the distant past, against the background of a lake. The eco friendly lodge designed by him, mostly using recycled building material, blends and merges with this setting in a composition which freely permits nature to survive and reveal itself without visual disturbance or distraction.

Galkadawala now boasts of 133 species of birds (out of 453 species found in Sri Lanka) , 50 species of butterflies and many other wild creatures including Elephants who visits the during the dry season.

As there is a network of lakes in surrounding area it is ideal for trekking or bird watching.

  • The Forest Lodge is a wonderful place to stay. The architecture is unusual and seems to be designed to bring you really close to the jungle. I enjoyed simply looking out at the animals and birds passing by. Maulie and her staff were most hospitable. Her staff arranged a driver to go to Sigiriya and the Minneriya National Park. They also prepared some exceptional meals for us; egg hoppers, vegetable curries, ginger tea with jaggery. Very memorable! I would highly recommend staying her.

  • This was a great stay. Our driver was a bit taken aback at the back roads leading to it and he said that it certainly was an uncommon destination! The beds were comfortable and the facilities were fine. We loved the design and the way it is nestled into the forest. The materials are all natural or recycled, and we kept noticing new interesting features. The beds had mosquito nets since the rooms are fairly open. There are monkeys right outside and we were pretty sure they would go into the room so we zipped everything up and our things were undisturbed. There's a nice path to the water and we saw lots of animals. Finally, the food was some of the best we had in the country, beautifully presented and delicious.

  • We did not meet Maulie but her house tree was a real paradise and the staff was very helpful and kind. Our room was clean and spacious despite the wild life outside and the food was delicious. We stayed with our son, aged two and they really made things easier for us. I would highly recommand Maulie's house tree!

  • We are so lucky to have had Galkadawala, Maulie and her excellent team as our first accommodations upon arriving in Sri Lanka. All the other reviews are true: stellar food in a lovely, truly unique environment, thoughtful and beautiful architecture and furnishings, and honest, helpful guidance in planning outings and next steps on your trip. It was a perfect first step for us, coming directly from the airport at 3AM, staying 3 nights, then continuing on further south. Thank you!

  • This was a very special place to stay. We loved our room up in the trees and the food prepared by Maulie's team was the best we had in Sri Lanka. Maulie was a delightful host and took us in her jeep to see birds and elephant - a highlight of our stay. Read our review here (website hidden)

  • This place is an absolute gem! We were so pleased with everything we wished we had more time to stay longer.

  • We had three wonderful nights here, staying in the newer of the two wooden lodges. The lodge itself is like a big 'boutique' treehouse, set in the forest next to a beautiful lake, with two lovely rooms, massive comfy beds, great bathrooms and decking space below the rooms to eat and relax. The staff are amazing, and they serve up authentic vegetarian food that's simply fantastic. My only advice is that you you'll be disappointed if you leave without staying at least two nights and have at one day just relaxing in the forest.

  • Our stay at Maulie's ecolodge was wonderful! It is a beautiful place. Unfortunately my friend was sick but anyway enjoyed it. It is like on the pics! And the food is so so good, hadn't experienced such a good meal and breakfast before, in other places in Sri Lanka. It was the best one I had! We could feel Maulie really loved nature and what she does.We feel really good in her company and in her guest house and recommend it! Very nice experience! Beautiful and peaceful place

  • From al the places we've stayed in Sri Lanka, the Galdakawala Forest Lodge was the best. It's a beautiful place and Mauli (and staff) put / is putting a lot of effort into every detail. The food, all vegetarian, is absolutely excellent.

  • This is a really amazing spot that is definitely off the beaten track. Our only regret is that we only had one day scheduled in this location. The rooms and common area are very relaxing and peaceful. The food provided by our host was amazing. This would be a great spot for a group of friends to use as a base for seeing the sights in the area for 3-4 days. The common area is very conducive to lounging and socializing. We would definitely recommend the lodge to anyone looking for something outside the typical hotel experience. Very cool place.
