Big River Farm - "The Zendo"

House - Entire home/apt · Comptche Ukiah Road, Mendocino, CA 95460, United States

The Space

HIDDEN in the Redwoods of the Northern California Coast, just 6 miles from the Village of Mendocino, Big River Farm is a tranquil getaway just minutes from the Pacific Ocean, endless adventure, fine dining, and much more.
SITUATED on an old berry farm and fruit orchard, "The Zendo" is a perfect rental for those looking for a quiet, cozy getaway just minutes from Mendocino. Originally a Zen commune built in the 60's, the Zendo is the center of a 4 acre hillside with numerous giant redwoods and fruit trees. Other cabins are accessed by the driveway, but are mostly hidden from view.
A REDWOOD HOUSE nestled amongst the ferns and cherry trees, the Zendo can sleep 4+ between its cozy BEDROOM w/ queensize bed and LIVING ROOM w/ kingsize pullout sleeper couch. There is a separate "bonus room" in the TOWER for yoga or quiet time. NEW! We just added wifi to the Zendo!
LARGE KITCHEN is well-equipped for cooking and entertaining. A couple or individual could enjoy the spacious single bedroom house, or up to 4 guests can comfortably share an incredibly AFFORDABLE vacation house.
SURROUNDED by Big River State Forest land, Big River Farm is only 1 mile by hiking trails from the Big River, and hosts many enormous ANCIENT REDWOOD TREES.
Make sure to come in the summertime and fall too, when the BERRY BUSHES and ORCHARDS are bursting with ripe goodies!

  • The Zendo is tucked back into a wooded hillside and we found it to wonderful escape filled with wood fire warmth, morning sunlight, and was ideal for an anniversary weekend. While the Mendocino area was beautiful, my most fond memory was an evening spent cooking dinner, stoking the fire, listening to music, and ignoring work emails. Definitely worth your time.

  • While we didn't get a chance to meet Debbie, we were able to stay in the Zendo with no issues. It is an AMAZING cabin in an incredible area. The house was so beautiful and filled with interesting architectural details. We had a great stay here during our honeymoon and are planning to return soon!

  • Debbie was great at answering all of our questions- very helpful and accommodating. note that the tower is detached. for some reason, despite it clearly saying detached in the description, i didn't realize it until we arrived. The tower is not really a place to spend the night- would be very very cold there. Because we have young kids, it required supervision with the large windows and single paned glasses. The house itself is beautiful! very cozy. The wood stove really kept us warm and it's very nice that they provide space heaters where necessary (like the bathroom). the king sleeper in the living room could be replaced for a more comfy one. i actually bumped my elbow on the side metal bars so much i ended up with bruises. kitchen and dining were my favorite rooms in the house. spectacular views in all directions from every room!

    Thanks for everything Debbie!

  • The Zendo was everything we'd hoped it would be. Clean, beautiful, and serene. Check-in couldn't possibly have been easier, and all the instructions were clear and useful. It was very easy to get hold of the host.

One note: Although it does have room for 4 (two on a full size bed and two on a fold-out sofa), be prepared for it to be pretty cozy quarters. This need not be a negative, depending on what you're looking for in a weekend, but just something to be aware of.

We'd absolutely come back. Great find and great value.

  • Beautiful cabin in the redwoods with lots of light and interesting architectural details. Quiet and peaceful, cozy wood stove, and wifi. My family and I love the Zendo.

  • My boyfriend and I stayed for 2 nights to celebrate my birthday and had the BEST time! I'm a City girl so anytime I can get to even a small patch of grass I smile but to wake up engulfed in beautiful and lush redwoods was a treat! A beautiful cabin with the most comfortable bed, fully loaded kitchen (I'm a foodie so loved it), a large and deep enough tub to truly loose yourself (fold one of the big fluffy towels and use as a pillow), and a lovely detached "tower" that is perfect for a bit of meditation, yoga or have fun with one of the many board games. I would HIGHLY recommend staying at the Zendo! Great times to be had!

  • The Zendo is a wonderful and magical place! Every part of it is so beautiful and comfortable. The lovely kitchen has everything you need to cook any meal. It is close to town, beaches and endless hiking trails. We were so sad to leave but so grateful to have had a few beautiful days in such a perfect place. Thank you so much!

  • We had a relaxing and restorative weekend in the Zendo and in Mendocino. Everything was easy, clean, and fun. Amenities exceeded out expectations as Debbie provided towels, plenty of firewood, and a stereo will some great CDs. Bring slippers as the Zendo can get a little chilly. We hope to be back soon.

  • PICTURES DO NOT DO IT JUSTICE! I took many myself, but mine too cannot capture the radiance that is Debbie's Big Farm! It is such a gem! I have stayed in three places now in Mendocino and each are spectacular in their own right, but what is amazing about the Zendo is that it is 6 miles from the main highway, which only takes minutes, but when you are at the Zendo you truly feel that you are in another world! It is clean, fully equip with a wonderful kitchen, plenty of towels/bedding, firewood, and space. The Zendo is exactly as it sounds- very Zen-like. There is not clutter and yet the decorations that are there are warm and inviting. I want Debbie to be my interior designer! Hot water filled the bath at night and the fire place really warmed the place up, but there are space heaters if you are worried about accessibility. The place is absolutely fantastic for a family and even for one couple, but I will say that two couples would be hard if you wanted to be intimate- just being honest here :) The absolutely gorgeous architecture is breathtaking, but it also means that the bedroom is visible from the living room and vise versa. Other than the lack of privacy, I still think two couples could have a fantastic weekend getaway. There is also a two story yoga cottage that has an extra shower and toilet. I did yoga both nights with redwoods surrounding the windows and a heater for warmth. THere are board games and books available as well. I will be going back as soon as I get the chance! And Debbie is wonderfully available and organized!

I am an architect & artist :) I have owned Big River Farm since 1984, guiding upgrades and renovations to the beautiful redwood cabins there. I gardened, raised my children, juiced apples, made cherry pies and now create art in my newly renovated studio, the Butsu. I am bringing back the Zen feeling that the original builders created by encouraging a peaceful and appreciative environment to flourish among those who come to spend some time there. We are now surrounded on 3 sides by Big River State Park so the redwood trees will always be with us, whispering in the wind.
