The entrance to Maksimir park is on the north side of the street.

Every spring since the late 19th century the gardens have opened their gates to the public. Pride of the gardens is the collection of 10,000 or more plant species, ranging from exotic imports to indigenous Croatian plants. The gardens are open until sundown and entrance is free of charge, but there are strict rules governing behaviour. It is forbidden to walk on the grass, shout, ride a bicycle or pick flowers. Kaptol Square is dominated by Zagreb cathedral since the 11th century. What you will see today does not represent the original construction. The first Cathedral was damaged during the Tartar attack and a great fire in the 13th century. Given that it was severely damaged by the 1880 earthquake, it was restored in the Neo-Gothic style by Hermann Bollé. The Zagreb Cathedral Organ belongs to the line of concert organs with romantic sound characteristics. In fact, it is classified among the top ten finest and top-quality organs in the world!

Rarely will you find a cathedral that's also the tallest building in the entire country, but the Zagrebačka Katedrala is one such building. According to many architectural experts, it's the most monumental Gothic church to be found in southeastern Europe. This archway was one of the four original entries into the walled Gornji grad of the feudal period. In 1731 a terrible fire destroyed much of the town, and legend has it that a vision of the Virgin Mary could be seen in the burnt ash that remained in this entry. The 13th-century St Mark’s Church is one of Zagreb’s most emblematic buildings. Its colourful tiled roof, constructed in 1880, has the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right. Maksimir Park is a large public park and recreation area, and the oldest park of its kind in Zagreb. Considered a unique cultural heritage site, it was founded in 1787 and at the time represented the first of its kind in southern Europe. The park was dedicated to the Zagreb Bishop, Maksimilijan Vrhovac, and while it once lay at the outskirts of the city, it is now surrounded by a number of major neighborhoods. The park was formerly a dense forest comprising oaks and hornbeams. Some remnants of the forest still exist, and in total the park spans an area of over 1000 acres. The baroque style of the park was redesigned in 1839 to incorporate romantic and neoclassical features. This shaped the park into what it is today, and entailed the grading of hills, the creation of lakes and the building of bridges and pathways. Today the park is a popular family hangout spot and an ideal location for picnics in summer. It features 5 sprawling lakes, as well as creeks and meadows that are home to a wide range of local fauna and flora. To the south of the park is the iconic Zagreb Zoo, where you will find animals like sea lions, otters and piranhas on display. The zoo hosts regular interactive feeding times, which give you the opportunity to get close to your favorite animals. The most photographed parts of the park are its pavilions, in particular the Echo Pavilion and the Bellevue Pavilion, which was constructed in 1843.

The landscape reminds of English gardens, and the best way to experience it is to take a leisurely walk among its alleys and pavilions. You can reach the park by trams 11 and 12 from Ban Jelačić Square. Zrinjevac Park is one of the most romantic places in Zagreb. This park is a true get-away from the city’s crowd. It is located just a stroll away from the Zagreb’s Main Square. The centerpiece of the park is the 19th century Music pavilion which serves as an open-air concert stage. It has several fountains, 130 years old weather monitoring station and monuments to famous Croatians. The major Zrinjevac event is Advent on Zrinjevac in Christmas time. Just around the corner from the central square is one of the most romantic places in Zagreb, Zrinjevac Park. Your first impression will be of a green and floral promenade – this is where art lovers flock in droves. Zrinjevac, also known as Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square, is a square and park in Zagreb with a plane tree-lined alley, built in 1892. It's the oldest of the seven Lower Town squares in Zagreb that form the so-called Green Horseshoe or Lenuci's Horseshoe. Continue walking towards King Tomislav Square and you will pass Strossmayer Square with the building of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the new academy library.

Zagreb is blessed with a location right next to Sljeme, an easy getaway that offers hiking trails and ski slopes of international quality. The upgrading of Sljeme is a recent phenomenon, much of it based on the global success of local skiing star Janica Kostelić and her sporting family. With her help and influence, Sljeme is now a regular fixture on the World Cup skiing circuit. The citizens of Zagreb love Sljeme all year round. In winter they can use the snowboarding and ski training facilities, or take advantage of the twice-weekly night skiing programme. There are ski runs for three levels and even sledging in nearby Činovnička meadow. Some prefer to come in summer, when they can find shelter from the heat, and come to Sljeme for walk and a picnic. Many love Sljeme in autumn, which brings out its carpet of colours; or spring, when the lower and surrounding slopes, named Medvednica, display many of the extensive (and occasionally rare) flora in full bloom.

There is almost a labyrinth of more then 70 marked hiking trails across the mountain, many starting from the city and ending on the mountaintop. When you wish to escape... The entire mountainside of Medvednica is yet another treasure of nature. Some 20 years ago, its higher western section was declared a nature reserve. In addition to the many trekking paths, a natural attraction is Veternica Cave, one of the largest in Croatia. Medvedgrad itself, is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Croatia, dating back to the 13th century. Some ten years ago it was reconstructed and given a new role – as a state memorial to the unknown defenders of the homeland.

Lots of green here in this little park in the centre of Zagreb. This is the place where kids play, they have their own little playground where they enjoy on the swings by the little fontaine. This is a famous place for dogs also, and dog lovers. Nice place for walks if you wanna get to the centre of Zagreb, just take a 5 minute stroll through the colorfoul green meadows and watch the dogs play and run and you soon get to the centre of Zagreb and go out.It is one of my favourite paths when I want to get home. My apartment is about 10 minute walk from the park.

Zagreb's Upper Town (Gornji Grad) is a network of little streets that stretch between two hills: Kaptol and Gradec. First settled in the 11th century, it is the oldest part of Zagreb with 17th and 18th-century buildings lining narrow, winding streets.
