Nakalele Blowhole is a fascinating natural geyser where seawater trapped in an underwater lava tube seeks a way to escape. It is said that these explosions of water look a bit like a whale spouting. Visitors are advised to take extreme caution when visiting due to its dangerous conditions when the waves crash in. Never stand between the ocean and blowhole and never stand with your back to the ocean.

Francis
From Francis's guidebook
At this Nakalele Blowhole, you’ll see geyser-like eruptions as the waves crash onshore. Park in the little parking area off the side of the road and walk down to get a view of the ocean. We love taking a drive up here, but a very important word of caution: stay on the high ground. People have been killed being swept into the blowhole or when large waves knock them off the rocks, so this isn’t someplace to mess around. You can get a really good view from the top and there is no need to walk down anywhere close to the water. View it from a safe distance and then head back into the car to enjoy the scenic drive back.

Ty
From Ty's guidebook
The prime attraction of the Nakalele Point is, of course, the blowhole. A blowhole’s effect is much like that of a geyser: a hole in the ground with a jet of water shooting periodically into the air. This blowhole is large enough to accommodate a manhole cover and is powerful enough to easily blast it high in the air – especially during high surf and tides. (tide forecast) Some jets can approach 50+ feet and if you’re close enough you can feel the ground tremble beneath your feet as water is blasted skywards. About a 1.25mile round trip hike from your parked car. Wear sensible shoes as the trail is multilevel with some jagged rocks. You can view the blowhole from afar, but if you want to get close you’ll have to hike it. Great place for amazing photos. We like to hit the Gazebo restaurant in Napili Bay very early in the day, then head to the blowhole trail to walk off the macadamia pancakes. :-) Please, be careful & heed all posted safety warnings.

Whale watching season in Maui is November-May with peak season typically running between mid-January and March. If you are on-island during this time, consider a whale watching excursion with the Pacific Whale Foundation to see these magnificent creatures. Certified Marine Naturalists provide innovative and educational whale watch ecotours drawing from nearly four decades of whale research and ocean conservation. It’s an exciting adventure you’ll be talking about long after you get home. Tours depart from either Maalaea or Lahaina Harbors. Each whale watching tour in Maui has a marine biologist on board that will share every aspect of the Humpback Whales.

While not particularly difficult, this hike is a heart pumper, as is it is all uphill. Enjoy beautiful sweeping views of Iao Valley and the West Maui Mountains on one side, and the ocean on the other. Wear sneakers, and pack a snack for the rest area at the top. We recommend getting an early start on this hike, before it gets too hot. Allow 2-3 hours for the hike, and avoid on muddy/ rainy days, as it can get slippery and dangerous. Rental cars have been known to be targeted for break-ins in parking lots like this one, where locals know the tourists will be gone for a little while. We suggest not leaving anything of value in the car.

A very pretty trail with gorgeous valley and forest views. It's 2.5 miles to the end (5 miles round trip) and you'll gain about 1500 feet. From Kahalui, get on Hwy 340 heading north. At .9 miles past mile market 6, you'll see the road to Maluhia Boy Scout Camp. Another .9 miles up the road (past the gate), is the trailhead. At the end of the trail is a small deck with a picnic table, with magnificent views. Best to start the hike early to avoid the clouds which diminish the views.

This hike is not for the faint of heart, it is definitely hard but the views up top are amazing. Go first thing in the morning to get a closer parking spot and to avoid the mid day clouds
