It was a excellent trip. Namik great guy, he will settle if something goes wrong ;)
READ THIS UNTIL THE END !
The appartement was not ready when we arrived so Namik offered us a larger flat called "Best location in Istanbul" for 89 euros/day. It was nice of him because he did not make us pay the difference.
Namik is nice and it is easy to get him on the phone. You leave the keys in the flat before leaving, really simple.
The flat is really in the center of Galata, very good location.
Bedroom 1 and living room were very nice
HOWEVER, the rest of it was dirty and old. Terrible smell in the kitchen.
Bathroom not clean.. There were things left in the trash.
WIFI DID NOT WORK.
At the end of it the flat needs refreshment to meet the standards...
It's was really great! There weren't any problem! Namik does his job excellent!
I booked this room without reading the reviews and comments about Namik. Once I've book and paid, I realised that his reviews were all positive. I was quite nervous because this was our last 3 days in Istanbul before heading home and I wanted it to be a memorable one.
Namik was quick in his responses via email and smses. But as soon as I arrived, he told us that the room that we booked was not available. Someone was still staying there. I thought it was pretty odd that he did not mention this to me before I arrived. The room that he gave us was bigger (http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/86686) which was nice. Except that it was off Istiklal street. The studio that I booked before was nearer to Galata tower which was at a quieter part of this area. The apartment was beautiful but I was really disappointed. It was on the ground floor and it had no view. The noise level is pretty bad, on friday night I couldnt sleep til 3am because people were chatting loudly in front of the jazz bar right next to the window of the apartment.
The Apartment - It was a two room apartment. The bigger room had a double bed and the smaller room had a single bed. It had central heating, kitchen, tv room, washing machine etc. Even though it was bigger and beautiful, the apartment is quite filthy. The toilet looked like it was not cleaned in months. There were clumps of hair everywhere on the floor and the white floormat was stained. I spent about an hour cleaning the bathroom before using it. My friend who was travelling with me doesn't usually have problems with dirty toilets, but she was as equally disgusted as I was.
The kitchen was also just as filthy. I chose not to step into the kitchen, the walls and tiles had a layer of oil on them. Towels were provided but it had a weird pungent smell. I wanted to wash them before using them, but we had no time because we were using the washing machine to wash our own clothes. The washing machine was great tho.
Wifi - as expected, the wifi was not working. I smsed Namik to get it sorted. He responded and said he was sending his friend to fix it but the friend never came. I expected this, so it was really my fault for not reading the reviews before booking this apartment.
All and all I would not recommend this apartment. Namik seemed like a great guy but we paid for a service and it was below expectations.
AVOID NAMIK!!! - He's a shifty little lying shyster - AVOID HIM!!!!
After not replying to my messages / emails asking to confirm his telephone number & where to meet, we arrived in Istanbul at 22:30 and still he wouldnt answer. Eventually he answered the Taxi drivers call (from a Turkish phone) but I still had to call him again to find out where to meet him!
When we did meet him he gave us the same line he's given others about the flat being flooded so we couldny stay in it. Namik assured us it was getting fixed and that it would be ready for us the next day. He then put us up in a hostel across the road (Little Wing - which we later found out costs $25pp after we had paid Namik $40pp for the studio) As it was 11pm we took it on his promise that he'd collect our bags & put them in our studio room the next day and then meet us with the key.
The next day he said he'd meet us at 5pm... Then he said 6:30pm... Then eventually at 7:20pm he said his friend had our bags and was taking us to a hotel because the room still wasnt ready. The hotel was pretty crappy & was, again, much cheaper than what we had paid.
I went round to the house to see him & was told by another of his friends that there was no flood but that all the rooms were full. Of course, Namik wasnt there.
Namik got Airbnb to refund our money (less one nights over priced stay in a hostel dorm room) had a moan at me for going to his firends house & in response to me asking him to be honest about double booking the room & lying about the flooding, said: "Well, that doesnt matter now, you're getting your money back" He then stopped taking my calls.
DO NOT BOOK ANYTHING WITH THIS GUY!!!
Istanbul was great though...
DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS MAN! We arrived in Istanbul at midnight having sent Namik various messages stating this and apologising for the inconvienience. We were met by him and a friend, and he informed us (with no previous warning) that the flat we had booked was unavailable because the previous guests had missed their flight and so were still there. He said he would move us the next day if we wanted to, or that we could stay at this new flat if we wanted to, and to tell him the next day what we wanted to do.
The flat he put us in was dirty. The bathroom had hairs all over the floor, the toilet wasn't clean so I had to clean it before I sat on it, the white bathmats had turned brown, the kitchen was filthy, with old and burnt oil on the stove and walls. The flat had a TV that didn't work, and the WiFi didn't work either. When I told Namik he said "yes, it does" and offered no further help. One plus: the bed was very comfortable, and the sheets and towels were clean. We were expecting a flat on the third floor. this one was on the ground floor so had a lot of noise from the street and from the upstairs neighbour. Anyway... the next day we told Namik that we did in fact want to change to the actual flat we had rented, he said he would move us in the afternoon. That afternoon I sent him 2 text messages to which he did not respond. I then called him twice and he did not answer. When I called him the third time his phone was off.... and we ended up sleeping there a second night.... the next morning I called Airbnb Customer Support and they were excellent. We received a part refund for the 2 nights we slept there and a full refund for the remaining nights, having analysed our situation very carefully and thoroughly. We ended up having to stay in a hostel just down the road. So.... TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE WITH THE HOST, GREAT EXPERIENCE WITH AIRBNB CUSTOMER SERVICE.
This was a terrible experience. No toilet paper, no soap, tv did not work, sheets and towles had not been cleaned, dirt balls on the floor, two hair dryers, neither worked, alarm clock did not work, refrigerator leaked. Owner was difficult to reach and when we did make contact he said it was not his duty to provide toilet paper and soap. Prior tenants knocked on our door looking for the owner and told us he was avoiding them and not returning a deposit they gave him. I would stay away from this mans properties. I believe he has 5 and forget about breakfast. No chance. We did not stay in the studio, he put us in his first floor unit.
First of all I need to mention, that we never saw this studio from inside. When we arrived, Namik explained that this studio is still occupied due to an accident of someone staying in there before us, who has to stay longer in Istanbul. We were offered a larger Studio - for an extra charge of 10€/night. From our point of view, Namik could have wrote us in advance informing us about the situation, and not when we arrived at 9pm in Istanbul. However, the newly offered studio was located in the same very perfect area like the original one - only small cobblestone streets, no real traffic or clubs that could disturb your rest.
Namik texted me a day after arrival, asking if everything is ok and if we need anything. This was very kind from him.
The studio itself had still the trash from the previous guests in the garbage and there was the smell of smoke in the studio (cigarettes in the ashtray as well). Other than that, the apartment met our expectations. The WiFi worked fine and the security deposit issue is being handled by airbnb.com directly, which is fine.
Unfortunately our experience with Namik was led down, when we once came back from sightseeing in the afternoon, while Namik was showing the apartment to new guests. He did not inform us in advance of this visit and we felt this was a violation of our privacy. In the house rules it was stated clear, that such visits can take place, but only after contacting the guests in advance.
If you don’t mind such surprises, the studio is perfect located and you are going to enjoy the fantastic city!
Don't give him security deposit ($150), you won't get it back. I tried to be polite and waited long enough, but he's ignoring me. Although the apartment and location are OK, I'm very disappointed with the host.
We enjoyed Istanbul, loved the neighborhood and found Namik to be a friendly host with some great recommendations. However, communication became a huge problem during our stay. We texted several times after arriving at the airport, without response, and waited for 2.5 hours past our scheduled meeting-time. Finally finding an open wifi signal (very difficult in Turkey) we emailed Namik; at this point, it was 2130 and we thought that we'd probably have to get a hotel room for the evening. In fairness upon getting the message, Namik arrived right away but we had hoped that the host would take the initiative for his guests, who are newcomers to the city. Later, walking to the apartment he said that he was switching us into an apartment different from the one we had reserved. Fortunately, this one seemed comparable to the one that we wanted and we stayed for the week. Willing to give Namik the benefit of the doubt to this point, we were most frustrated that on the date of our departure, and ready to leave for the airport, he did not show up at the scheduled time and location. We waited over 30 minutes until eventually heading back to our apartment to email him. Namik arrived in the next 5 minutes, apologizing because he had overslept.
Istanbul is a city that cannot be spoiled. Surely, the apartment is a nice place and the neighborhood is ideal. Fortunately all turned out well in the end, but there was potential for any of these situations to derail our trip.
Dealing with Namik has always been a pleasure in my experience. He is very helpful and easy to reach and is I'm sure as good a guest as he is a host.
