Response from Rebecca:
Having the opportunity to share my home with travelers has overall been a
wonderful experience and the start of many friendships. This review is an
outlier from the others, and I would like to explain the context.
Aleksandra was an actress that rented my loft to shoot part of a movie. I
made an exception for her, and allowed her to view the loft before she
agreed to shoot her movie in it. Aleksandra requested an early check-in
(7am, immediately after my previous guest, Quentin), and a late check-out,
which I accommodated. However, because she wanted to check in immediately
after my previous guest and before business hours, we agreed that
Aleksandra would be responsible for cleaning the loft before shooting her
movie. She agreed to this and assured me she would have a professional
cleaning crew clean the loft before and after shooting the film.
While Aleksandra had use of the loft, I received several calls from
concerned neighbors. Aleksandra's sizable "crew" was comprised of
non-professional film students. They had been ordering my neighbors to
keep the front door of the building and the elevator (which is meant to
remain locked) propped open so that they could more easily move their
equipment in and out of the building, and more easily come and go for their
cigarette breaks. This compromised the security of the building, made my
neighbors feel unsafe, and of course caused conflict between Aleksandra and
Because of the concerned phone calls I received, I visited the loft on the
third day of shooting. I was unhappy with the behavior I observed in
Aleksandra's crew, but still honored the commitment I had made to allow
Aleksandra to finish the work for which she had rented the loft. I also
had an opportunity to the view the loft, so I am very much aware of the
damage for which Aleksandra's crew was responsible.
After Aleksandra and her crew left, I found my home in shambles. A shelf
had been ripped out of my bedroom wall (it is now lopsided in my bedroom
because of the damage to the underlying dry wall), a very expensive cabinet
in my bathroom was broken and shabbily repaired, my shower curtain and rod
were on the bathroom floors, my sheets were wet and on the floor, there was
wax all over my window sills, and there were stains on my tables, walls,
and counters. Aleksandra admitted to all of this damage over email and
text (which I have saved) - her claim in her review that she was "blamed
for something [she] did not do" is dishonest. Her producer assured me he
would send a repair person to address the damage, but then never returned
my phone calls.
Regarding her complaint about my ceiling, the loft is over 120 years old
and does have imperfections. That said, Aleksandra had the opportunity to
view the loft before booking, so for her to complain about my ceiling
afterward is a little silly.
Overall, my experience on airbnb has been extremely positive. I have
hosted over twenty wonderful guests, and this one has been my only negative
experience. Please email me with any additional questions or concerns!
