I live in San Jose with my partner and our two daughters. I work in the high tech industry and my partner is a English Literature teacher at a private high school in the area.

I arrived after a delayed flight. Jose was very accommodating throughout the process and I had no problem checking in at a different time (after informing him). A bottle of wine greeted me, though my schedule didn't allow time to enjoy it.
La Casita is well captured by the pictures. It's got high ceilings and skylights, which was nice. Some of the fixtures are a little older, but that never bothers me. I didn't try out the wifi, as I usually jump at the chance to use wired ethernet (I take reliability over convenience). Didn't use the kitchen but it seemed to have everything I'd need if I was cooking there. The bathroom worked well and the shower/hot water wasn't an issue.
I was in town on business and the walk to the convention center was actually quite pleasant in the mornings. I was able to explore some of the restaurants that serve the San Jose State campus and avoid the pricey hotel bills that accompany conferences. As an added bonus, I stopped at the taco place on the main drag on the way home and was able to grab a late night snack while heading back towards La Casita. I often went through campus at night as it was better lit than the side streets but overall I felt safe walking around both night and day.
At Jose-Maria's, we were greeted with a lovely card and bottle of wine. The cottage is spacious, clean and private, with a lovely garden, outdoor table and grill just outside. Clean sheets and towels, working kitchen, comfy bed, and great location for getting around San Jose. Jose-Maria and his partner were incredibly friendly and advised us on local beaches and restaurants. Next time I'm in San Jose, I hope to stay with them again. Would highly recommend to others.
Jose-Maria was a very welcoming host! Even though I had booked the place the same day, he was able to accommodate!
The environment within the cottage and the property itself is wonderful! I was able to relax in the backyard (with plenty of foliage!) and had a good sense of privacy when inside the cottage. The place itself is very clean, stocked with kitchen/bathroom supplies/equipment and most importantly: every appliance is fully functional. The bed is comfortable, the room has *PLENTY* of space, and is decorated very nicely. I did not have any special requests so I cannot comment much on that, but I am sure Jose-Maria would accommodate.
I stayed at the Villa Carlota while attending a conference at the convention center. The cottage was simple, clean, and very comfortable! And the walk to the convention center was a short (10 minutes) respite from the perpetual sitting of conference attendance.
I definitely recommend it!
Our stay at Villa Carlota was fantastic. Jose Maria was incredibly accommodating to our needs and it was a pleasure to meet him and his wife. The cottage is spacious and comfortable and sits behind a beautiful array of fruit trees. The bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom and shower were excellent, and just as Jose Maria had explained, the hot water takes two minutes to heat up but after that works perfectly. The main house is a fascinating work of architecture, as are many of the houses on this block, which is conveniently located very close to a great and culturally rich part of town, South First Street, also known as SOFA. Thank you Jose Maria, we would definitely love to come back!
I had a great stay at Jose-Maria's. Jose warmly welcomed me, and he gave me a quick tour. He even had a clothes iron available, per my request.
I walked to and from the convention center, morning and night, and felt comfortable doing so. The walk is about 10 minutes.
There have been some comments about the hot water. I left the hot water on for 1-2 minutes to give it time to travel from the main house, and it was piping hot. No issues whatsoever. Also, I did not use the wifi, as there was a long ethernet cable that worked well.
I would recommend Jose-Maria's place to others, and I would not hesitate to stay there again.
The cottage was very quiet and comfortable. It felt spacious because of the high ceilings and well laid out furniture. Communication and checking in and out was easy. Very convenient to the freeway. The only drawback was the temperature in the shower. We were never able to get it to heat up.
Wonderful place! Quiet and secluded amidst an urban environment replete with myriad cultural opportunities in walking distance. Jose-Maria provided me with all the information I could have needed regarding my stay. My late (even before the flight delay) arrival was accommodated. A lovely card was left for me along with a snack and a selection of beverages. I enjoyed the cottage decor as well. I absolutely recommend staying in the Cottage Villa Carlota the next time you are in San Jose!
We enjoyed our stay at the historic Victorian not far from San Jose State and an easy walk from downtown. The space is roomy with two large bedrooms. The walls reflect the attic and the charm of an older building. The stairs are old and restrict the size of what could go upstairs. Still a nice view of the hills to the west.
I stayed in this apartment for two weeks and generally liked it. Jose was a wonderful host, getting me whatever I needed (clean towels, a longer Internet cable, etc). He also provided free parking and Internet access, which helped lower the cost of my overall stay. The studio apartment is in a sort of converted garage and has a full kitchen and bathroom. It's located in the backyard of the owner's home and is pretty private. My only complaint is that the apartment could have used a little cleaning (the floors, mainly). Besides that (which is something that could easily be fixed), my stay was very pleasant. I would recommend this apartment if you're planning to stay in downtown San Jose.
Thank you very much for your stay Jose-Maria. It was a pleasure to have you here. We´re glad that you enjoyed your time with us. We hope to see you again!
We'd love to host Jose and Ann's family again some day! They are great guests and we enjoyed getting acquainted with them. We ditto our last review of them.
Jose and his family stayed several days with us, enjoying time spent in Yosemite National Park for two of those days. We were happy to host this family, who were friendly, appreciative, and all-around good guests. We enjoyed our short visits with them and hope that they will choose to return to our home to spend time in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks!
