We had an awesome summer (we spent two months here) in Portland thanks, in part, to Mark's lovely apartment.
Based in the vibrant Kerns/Laurelhurst area, in SE Portland, we had everything we wanted on our doorstep (Wholefoods, Laurelhurst Theatre - $4 for a ticket!, Laurelhurst Park, and a variety of great bars and restaurants). We would definitely stay in the SE if we ever come back to Portland (and we intend to!) - we enjoyed it so much that we rarely needed to go downtown. It is, however, super easy to get downtown from the apartment; it's about an hour walk, 30 minutes by bike, and 15 minutes on the number 20 bus.
Mark's apartment is very spacious and immediately felt like home. The neighbourhood is relatively quiet, although very close to so many amenities (see above). In particular, the neighbours in the apartment block were absolutely delightful - Joe and Coleen (the managers) were especially helpful. We kept in contact with Mark via email and (website hidden) and he gave us some good recommendations of things to do in Portland.
Overall we had a brilliant stay in Portland and are now looking for a way to come back. Thanks to Mark for letting us his apartment and giving us the opportunity to experience the SE, what we think is the best part of Portland.
Mark was a terrific host! The apartment was neat and clean, spacious and really quiet. He was in Germany, but the apartment managers were ready to welcome us and were always available for questions and conversation. Mark's artwork and decor were fascinating, his kitchen full of fancy gadgets, and the couch and bed were brand new and very comfortable. The apartment is a short walk from the lush and green Laurelhurst Park, charming Burnside cafes, a Whole Foods, and some of Portland's famous food carts. A few blocks in the other direction brought us to Belmont Street's shops and restaurants, and then in 2 more blocks we found ourselves on wild and wonderful Hawthorne Boulevard with Powells Bookstore and the Bagdad Theatre!
Response from Mark:

Mark was a great house guest and I'd love to have him back anytime! He's easy-going, well-traveled, charming, nice, polite, clean, respectful, and much more!
A very intelligent, subtle, decent and understanding man and a wonderful guest. It was very fun, I enjoyed his stay very much! Thank you for staying at my place!!
He is a very nice person :),
Its esay to comunicate and educated person.
Mark is a very nice guy, easy to talk with and respectful with the flat.
Mark stayed with me a few daws and always was very polite and friendly.
I strongly recommend him as a good guest!
Big Mark, fantastic guy globetrotters.
I was sorry that you've been with us a few days.
See you soon
Marc was one of the best guests we have ever hosted, or better said he was THE best guest we have ever had. Extremely gentle and flexible, my room mates and I enjoyed talking to him about his adventures in Europe, giving him advice for his next escapades and most importantly trying to figure out how much he liked eating pizza in Italy and how different it was from PizzaHut and Co :-)
Marc you should know that you are very welcome to come to see us again at anytime, we were happy to know you and we were so glad to spend those days with you.
All the best for your next adventures in Portugal !

Mark spent a week at our place. Very cheerful funny guy who carried a banjo on his eurowandering. Entertained us with the banjo too. Thx to him I know the famous funky meet factory. Mark is also very understanding who would lend an ear if you need to vent.
Enjoy the rest of your trip.
Mark was a pleasure to host. He was seeking adventure and we were able to point him in the right direction (and even joined along once or twice)! He was very respectful of our space and belongings. He lives his life right and it shows in the way he treats others and the opportunities life throws his way. Book with piece of mind knowing you can't find a better or more trustworthy person.
Marks a friendly guy. You'll like him.
