We had a great time staying at Melanie and Alex's for a couple of nights. Although Melanie was out of town, she and Alex were both very responsive. Communication was great, the location was awesome, and the room was clean and comfortable. I'd definitely stay there again!
My sister, brother and I stayed at Melanie and Alex's for 16 nights over the Christmas and New Year period.
Melanie kindly agreed for me to check in as early as 2am the night before, although check in wasn't until 12 hours later. That was a great help as my flight arrived before my siblings.
We didn't see much of Alex or Melanie so we pretty much had the house to ourselves, although we could contact them at any point and Melanie responds almost instantly.
The house itself is very nice, big and spacious. Melanie had snacks in the room on arrival, cosmetics in the bathroom and a communal cupboard for tea/coffee for shared use in the kitchen. The bathroom and bedroom were left clean for our use and we had ample towels too.
Melanie and Alex are both great hosts and very down to earth. We were all made to feel very comfortable in their house. Melanie rang a takeaway for us on the first night which as much appreciated and also suggested we had our cousins (who were also in New York) to their house on Christmas day so we could all be together as her and Alex weren't going to be home.
The only thing to take note of is the area. It's not too far out from Manhattan and public transport is very accessible, but if I had been alone I wouldn't have felt safe walking from the subway back home once it gets dark. Even as three of us we made an effort to be back home before 9/10pm. That being said, we didn't have problems personally and the station is no more than five minute walk. Another bonus is the house is located just off a main road, so it's busy. I guess it's down to the individual and what you're used to.
Overall, we had a great stay and Alex and Melanie are very accommodating. No complaints.
We stayed at Melanie's place for several days in the end of December and enjoyed it very much. We didn't get to meet Melanie, but she was very easy to reach by phone and very helpful with all our needs.
The house and the room are very beautiful, comfortable and spacious (bathroom is huge!). Lots of thoughtful little touches that make you feel comfortable& welcome - like the snacks and toiletries basket. The neighborhood is lovely and safe, and J train is just a short walk away. Highly recommended!
Melanie was so sweet! She was very welcoming and the room was great! The description online is very accurate as well. Very happy with my stay with Melanie! :)
Melanie was a lovely host and very accomodating. She has a very busy schedule but we were fortunate to bump into her a couple of times. The house was clean and kept nice and warm on a cold dreary day. We drove into town and parking was not an issue. There is not much in the close vicinity, however the T is close. I would definately recommend this one.
We felt completely at home. Since we were very busy with sightseeing, we hardly spent any time there, so we really appreciated their liberal come-and-go flexibility. Everything was just as they told it would be in the listing. The beds were particularly comfortable. We had a very nice stay.
Melanie was an excellent host and met the space needs for traveling with my son last minute.
This was a lovely first experience of using Air bnb. I arrived on a very late flight in from Chicago, but Melanie was very easy about it and waited up for me to arrive. Together with Alex, they are excellent hosts - even if you don't see them much (I didn't), they are always contactable and always helpful to solve any problems, give advice on the area, and so on. The house itself is in a quiet street just 5 mins from the train, and, once you get your head around the geography, you can enjoy walking through some really interesting neighborhoods like Bushwick (the graffiti is amazing) and Bed-sty. just be wise and aware and you won;t have any issues. it's also a short ride in to Manhattan (again, once you get the layout in your brain), and a longer, but rewarding, ride to Coney Island. The house is a terraced brownstone, just at the end (start?) of Madison - easy to find. My room was a really good size, comfortable, and with a more than large enough private bathroom. Once you're in, you do feel like you're in a quiet, relaxing place - its got a really welcoming feel about it. A perfect venue to work or leisure out of, and a nice haven to return to in the evening. Melanie and Alex are excellent hosts, they get the balance between welcoming and giving space, and that's great. Thanks for making this such a comfortable and enjoyable first Air bnb! Much appreciated, I'm grateful for your accommodating and helpful demeanor. Very best wishes! STEVE BASSETT
Me and my father were really pleased with the room and the apartment. We stayed in the huge room with two beds. and it looked just like it was described. I had close contact with Melanie before we arrived and when we arrived we got all the information we needed. Melanie and Alex were nice and welcoming and it felt comfortable staying in their home. The neighbourhood was quiet and it felt safe walking around even during the night. The subway is very close, 5 minutes walk from the house. We really recommend this room and the hosts.
Melanie's place is a lovely, old brownstone in Brooklyn. Our room was gorgeous - high ceilings, crown moldings, wood floors, and very spacious! The bathroom was also VERY spacious and clean. Melanie provided a wide range of complimentary amenities beyond the typical shampoo and conditioner (very thoughtful!), as well as water bottles and some snacks. She left very clear instructions on how to get into the house, as well as a binder full of very clear, easy to understand info about the place.
The space was very quiet, with no street or neighborhood noise. It is an old house, though, so the floorboards can be a bit creaky and noise tends to echo a bit. Overall, it was very quiet during or entire stay. We didn't even run into Melanie or her husband Alex until check out!
The neighborhood is definitely more residential, though, so there aren't a ton of options for nearby restaurants and coffee shops. The J train is a few blocks, and the next closest train is the L, which is a bit over a half a mile away. This is good for someone who wants to stay somewhere a bit out of the hustle and bustle of the city.
