This lovely historic barn turned home was the perfect solution to our extended stay in the Stonington/Mystic area. It's beautiful setting (a horse rescue farm) added to its charm and situated us 2 minutes to the interstate and 5 minutes into Mystic - perfect! We had plenty of room to spread out and host our grown children and grandchildren when a special occasion arose. Our hosts were always quick to respond to any questions or concerns, as well as, giving us the privacy we needed staying on for 4 months. We are grateful for this little red barn!
Sandra greeted us and was very responsive to our requests, and the house is really lovely and historic.
We had a lovely weekend stay at the Colonial Stonington Home! The room was spacious and well appointed. Even though the private washroom was next to our room, it was no bother at all. The other two rooms have en suites. The property is lovely and conveniently located near Stonington Borough and Mystic - super easy to find from the highway. The breakfast that Sandra served was scrumptious - fresh baked muffins, eggs from her own chickens, endless coffee. It was delightful to linger over breakfast, chatting with the other guest, just relaxing. Sandra is a warm and friendly host with the right amount of congeniality. We enjoyed our stay and will book again if we're in the area again.
Our recent stay with Sandra and Jim in their Colonial-era home was a pleasure in every respect. Sandra and Jim are attentive but not obtrusive hosts and Sandra is an accomplished cook. She baked delicious muffins for our breakfasts and one morning at nominal extra cost scrambled fresh-that-morning eggs from her flock of hens for us. (In addition to their chickens, Sandra and Jim look after two horses they have rescued, a friendly collie and a brilliant blue parrot named Admiral Bird who seems right at home in an historic house in a town that in the 19th Century was a major ship-building center and seaport.) Sandra and Jim have carefully restored their 1710 home, furnishing it with attractive and functional antiques as well as a few modern amenities, such as claw-foot bathtubs with whirlpool jets. Our two rooms plus bath were clean and our four-poster bed had a moderately firm, comfortable mattress. The house is easy to find, not far from I-95 (but far enough so that you don't hear the traffic noise) and centrally located. The downtowns of both Stonington and Mystic are minutes away. Jim and Sandra are knowledgable about the history and amenities of the area and glad to help visitors with information and great suggestions about where to eat and what to see. We look forward to staying with them on future visits.
Sandra was an amazing hostess, and the grounds were beautiful. Lovely to have a cup of hot coffee and homemade treats on the back stoop in the morning, watching the horses graze and listen to the birds chirp. I will add that Sandra was incredibly considerate with my dietary restriction (no dairy) - she customized recipes to that limitation - incredible service! Thanks again, Sandra!
If you love historic homes than I think you would love this place. It has a ton of charm. Sandra (the owner) was pleasant and knowledgeable about the town and places to go. Because it is as historic (1700's) as it is you will hear creaks and noise very easily. I think this is part of the charm of the older homes. My wife loved the giant tub! Overall It's a great place to stay to explore an amazing part of CT.
The Red Barn is one of the most charming and comfortable places I've stayed. My dog and cat and I stayed in the Barn for one month in late fall and loved our time there. My dog Wilson fell in love with Sandra and Jim's dog Kelly; and I'm sure he still misses playing with her. The hosts were friendly and unintrusive during my stay and I had the pleasure of chatting with Sandra often while our dogs were playing. The property and town are beautiful -- quiet with a secluded atmosphere, but everything you need is close and getting onto I-95 to visit Mystic or Providence is easy. The Barn itself was easy to immediately settle into while busy with work and I appreciated that. Everything was clean on arrival and Sandra gave me a quick walkthrough. The kitchen is fantastic! I'll miss cooking on that stove! I stayed alone, but there is plenty of place for a group/family to be just as comfortable. Highly recommend a stay here!
We enjoyed our stay very much, the room, the bathroom , the fireplace, the suroundings and specially we enjoyed Sandra's hospitality.
Hope to see you again.
Great, quiet, relaxing space! Loved the little library sitting room & porch area. Room was wonderful - spacious, well furnished & appointed, including a handy, small fridge; fireplace was a sweet touch; huge bathroom with a fantastic claw foot whirlpool. (Room was named which I can't recall but it was the Top of stairs diagonally on right at back of house)
Overall a wonderful historic little spot, well maintained & decorated as such. Rooms were clean & ready as promised. Innkeepers were there whenever needed, unintrusive when not and very accommodating to our arrival arrangements. Thanks for a great stay!
Historic New England home with so much character. The location is both convenient and very peaceful. The classic winding country roads have stone walls, farms, and woods. Character and comfort at a reasonable rate and Sandra was thoughtful with suggestions.
