Hey, I'm Haider!
Baghdad, Baghdād, Iraq · Member since October 2013

Well, first I'd say, yes, I am from Baghdad, Iraq. Although I don't necessarily identify myself in this particular way, nor consider it an important aspect of myself, but I know that people generally do. I hope this won't play a role in framing me in certain way in the context of the terrible things that are currently taking place in this country.

Otherwise, I studied electrical engineering and took intensive courses in computer networking and graphic design. Then I moved to Lebanon, another country in the middle east, and went to the American University of Beirut to get a better education than what was available in Iraq, especially post 2003 war, and wanted to earn a degree in computer engineering. However, I became so fascinated in social studies that in the end I got a BA degree in sociology/anthropology and MA in anthropology. I didn't give up my interest though in computers and technology till this day. And I am also fascinated by the world of films and theater.

This will be my first visit to the United States. In fact, I am moving to the US permanently after I have been granted a Special Immigrant Visa for having worked for the US government in Iraq after 2003. I have to say that, regardless of all the controversy surrounding the US involvement in Iraq, I am full of gratitude that I was given this great opportunity to move to a safe place where I can pursue a doctoral degree, a successful career and a whole new life.

Regarding my social habits that my host might be interested in knowing, I'd say I'm not the type of person who would be all over the place. I will probably spend most of the time, when I'm home, in my private room reading and catching up with the world over the internet, but I would also love to spend some time getting to know new people and hanging out in the city. In this prospective visit, I'm planning to spend much time trying to explore San Francisco, as it is one of the most interesting cities for me to live in, based on my knowledge of the progressive/liberal nature of its people. And I would appreciate any guidance and recommendations that my host might like to kindly offer to me.
