The apartment was perfect! Very comfortable and well located. Shops, restaurants and public transport were a short walk down the hills. Huge, comfortable bed, and we could watch the sun come up over the city. Absolutely amazing view from the windows! No problems with parking, and the neighborhood was quiet and safe. We were here for several weeks while on a work contract, and if we return to San Francisco this will definitely be our first choice for another stay!
We had a wonderful stay at Jay's apt. The view of course is splendid and the kitchen is very modern. My wife loved the two chair dining table. Parking is also real easy I never had to drive around. We would definitely be coming back here in the future.
The location was perfect with access to local amenities and proximity to the BART. The view overlooking the entire city was breathtaking and created an ever-changing vista with time of day/weather changes. Would definitely stay again.
Jay and John were very accommodating in terms of meet up time, etc. The view was fantastic! The unit itself was a bit dirty with dust bunnies etc. and had a smell in the place. These issues brought it down from 5 stars to 3 stars. Once cleaned properly, this will help.
We had a lovely time at John's apartment. Although I lived before in San Francisco I had never been in the Glen Park neighborhood - while it is far from the city center it is a utterly delightful place with a truly stunning view of the bay, east bay, and downtown from the apartment. The BART train makes it quick and easy to get downtown and anywhere in the bay area. Canyon Market, an superb organic grocery (think a small, local Whole Foods) was a great resource and we also enjoyed Glen Park's friendly cafes and a poetry reading at a great bookstore, Bird and Beckett.
If you are in shape you'll enjoy the 5-10 minute uphill walk from BART and Glen Park village to the apartment (typical for San Franciscians), if not, you might want to have a car. We did rent a car for a few days and, exceptionally for San Francisco, the parking is not zone-restricted near the apartment and spaces were easy to find.
The apartment itself was as advertised, charming and funky, with a well-equiped kitchen. Not a fault of the apartment, but we were 4, a couple, and two singles, and the apartment is not equipped for so many. (There are only three chairs in the entire apartment so someone always had to stand at meals!) The owner did tell us it would be a squeeze, but still graciously accepted the last minute addition of an extra person. I brought a sleeping bag and could have slept on the floor in the living room but it was suggested that I try the built-in couch-bench on the verandah - covered by the roof but otherwise open to the air. I did and slept wonderfully, enjoying the fresh air of Glen Park and waking to the breathtaking view. There were a few other minor issues with the apartment like the garbage disposal didn't work, also the heating although that would have been fixed if we had needed it. The bathroom, while adequate, isn't extraordinary (a bit old, very hard to turn the shower on). The seating in the living room is one of those funky things about the apartment, a sort of built-in multi-layer padded cube ... but not really very good for sitting together and chatting. Really, a few more chairs would have been nice, even if we hadn't been 4 with 3 chairs at the kitchen table.
The apartment is especially perfect if you want easy access to city but would enjoy tranquility after the day's activities. It is very good if you plan to have a car as few places in the city will offer easy parking. Very few places at a reasonable price will over the view you'll enjoy here. The apartment itself is charming, absolutely ideal for a couple, good for three, with a few defects but also with a lot of charm. Highly recommended.
I had a great stay! The view of downtown is amazing. Glen Park is a quiet neighbourhood with its own mini-center around Glen Park BART station. You will find local market, few pubs and restaurants there. You MUST visit Higher Grounds Coffee House for a brunch - french toasts were my ultimate "guilty pleasure".
Although the area is hilly, you should walk around to see nice places around. Some views are breath-taking. Definitely check out Glen Canyon Park and Twin Peaks.
John is friendly guy, he used to be a couch surfer too. Overall he was very responsive to my requests. Good internet speed and the place was quiet and comfortable during my stay == satisfaction :)
John was a very gracious and responsive host. The apartment was quiet and private, with an excellent kitchen. Parking was never hard to find - usually right across the street. Public transportation is nearby (the J Church train, or the Glen Park BART station to downtown or SFO airport), but a steep climb. It's worth it, though, for the marvelous view!
John's apartment is in a great neighborhood. It is definitely safe to walk around in (good exercise, too, as it is quite hilly) and has several quaint restaurants within walking distance. The place itself has everything you might need, as well as the fantastic view, which the pictures don't do justice for. Viewing the city lights at night from the hills of Glen Park was definitely a treat. John and his family were very nice- very accessible for questions, otherwise you would never know that they were in the apartment upstairs- they were very quiet and respectful.
We loved John's quirky, artistic apartment! It is obviously a reflection of John's enthusiasm for not just San Francisco but the arts of the world. The views of the city are spectacular, and the mini-garden on the deck, with jasmine twining and blooming roses adds to the enjoyment. There is plenty of seating on the deck for games of Scrabble or a pre-prandial cocktail or glass of wine.
I always look for a kitchen I can cook in, and John's didn't disappoint. I loved the antique Wedgewood range; the burners are powerful and responsive. There are high quality pots and pans, and a good assortment of knives. The granite countertops are unusually beautiful, too.
The bedroom, on the other side of the apartment from the deck, is quiet. The bed is comfortable, with high quality linens and many pillows. I appreciated the row of windows and windowbox planted with jasmine and daisies. How cheerful.
The Glen Park area of San Francisco is a little village unto itself, with some good restaurants, a high end food market, and a lot of charm, plus its own BART (subway) station.
John is a charming and very solicitous host. He responded right away to every request, and we enjoyed spending some time socializing with him.
I have stayed in a number of vacation apartments over the years, and John's is a standout in terms of aesthetics as well as comfort. There are masks on the walls throughout the apartment, each different, each adding its own personality.
Thanks, John, for sharing this special place with us.
Just an amazing stay! Could not stop looking at the great view on SF Downtown. Especially at night, the lights and sounds were stunning. Perfect for a retreat from the busy city!
Would recommend to have a car here, but for "european" standards it is still easy to walkt within 10 minutes to Mission Street, supermarkts or local groceries.
John and Isabel gave us a very warm welcome with a snack. Felt well at first moment! And we had everything else we needed - just a great stay with very impressive views that I will keep in memory!
