Large, ancient house with three floors and a beautiful view on the ocean. The thick walls, high ceilings and long stairs make you feel like a count(ess). The rooms have been modernized but still give you the ancient atmosphere.
The house is located only 50m away from the central church of Santo Antonio in one of the small back streets, which is makes it not so easy to reach by car. However, there is a nearby parking area. It's location on the mountain gives you a splendid view over the ocean, both from the living room as from the main sleeping rooms.
The natural swimming pool is a 500m walk downhill from the house and very quiet. You will probably be the only tourists in the village.
Landlords have changed recently. The new landlord also runs a property elsewhere on the island. He is a kind person, who can give you good advice for visiting/to do in this part of the island as well as some good tips for dining.
All in all our experience was great, The host was incredible! He told us about great hikes, great places to swim and great places to eat. We took his advice and we had the most amazing time. He knows the island well.
The house is enormous! So if you have a big group it is perfect. It had some little imperfections. The bathroom needed some work and the wireless was on the ground floor (quite dark and only has beds), but everyone preferred the upper two floors where the living room and bedrooms are. The house is huge, so we didn't even need the beds on the ground floor. The kitchen was missing a few things. That said Jose was eager to make changes to the house.
The house itself is really beautiful and it sits in village where there are no hotels. So you will most likely be the only tourist. But that's what we loved it about it! It sits not far from church so you get the lovely bells ringing. There are a couple of small markets where you can pick essentials and in the next town there is both a supermarket and gas station. Because the food was so good at the restaurant, we ate out a lot. There is also an amazing restaurant up on the main road which Jose can direct you to. The house is a also a great home base to anywhere on the island.
Huge and really interesting house and everyone in the family was very welcoming. As other reviews mentioned, the house is in Santo Antonio not Ponta Delgada but driving around the island takes no time at all. There's also a small supermarket very close to the house. Within walking distance there's also a great natural swimming pool and a decent restaurant with amazing sea views. It would be a great place to sit and do a bit of whale watching.
Great position with ocean view, big and clean house well serviced, we had a good time and for sure we recommend it!
Hugo Santos at Casa Vale do Sossego was exceptional at coordinating our stay. Hugo maintained excellent communication and with us and went out of his way to ensure we got to this remote piece of paradise without issue. The house itself is almost as though it's out of a movie.
We loved our stay and felt right at home with the hospitality... Glad we have a house that we will go back to each time we visit Sao Miguel !!
What a beautiful, recently renovated, large house. Even nicer than the photos. One of the nicest homes I've ever been in. Host was flexible with arrival times and providing any information we needed. One small detail - the house is not in Ponta Delgada (city) as the airbnb website indicates, but in the Ponta Delgada "county", 15 kilometers away - which was perfect for us (others might want to be in the "city").
