I called ahead to let Leigh know that I was coming, but when we actually spoke she told me that the place was actually a 30 minute walk from the city center and that I had better take a taxi. I don't think I expect too much from airbnb places; not a home-cooked meal or a chocolate on my pillow, but when someone says that I should take a taxi, which would force me to spend more money on transportation, back and forth into the city center (where all the action is), then I don't feel very welcome. I don't like staying in places where I don't feel welcome. So, I stayed in a hostel, not calling because I didn't want to waste my international minutes. The other places I've stayed at have been either nearer to the city center, bus rides away (a nicer option than spending 3x as much on a taxi) or I actually got picked up one time from the bus station coming into the city! Maybe it was the day, or the time of day that I came into the city, but there it is.
Leigh is extremely hospitable and kind. I would gladly recommend her!
I didn't manage to stay in the end, but Leigh was very friendly and flexible in my communications with her.
The flat location was great, the neighborhood around the University makes for a nice walk as it was close to the Botanical Gardens and University and the city center is quite close. Leigh was friendly, relaxed and flexilble, she was able to give me some helpful tips about getting around the city.
Leigh and John were very gracious about accommodating my arrival, which was well past midnight due to 2 flights and a long bus ride. Throughout my stay, we shared interesting conversation about our lives and our families. Although our various comings and goings were on different schedules, they were always gracious and friendly, even sharing their laptop when my international SIM card was not functional, and I needed to get online.
Others may already know this, but apparently in the UK there are no electrical outlets in bathrooms, which makes it very hard to use a blow dryer and curling iron. This is not the fault of my hosts, rather, I am pointing out a cultural difference in advance!
The area in which the apartment is located is near the university, and feels pleasant and safe, even when coming home late at night.
Leigh and John were absolutely lovely. I did not spend much time in the apartment, but when I did they were both warm and welcoming, offering warm tea whenever necessary. John took time out of his day to show me a few maps of the city and point out numerous pubs to check out.
The bed was comfortable and the are was close to everything that I could have wanted. I would absolutely come back again if the opportunity presents itself.
Thanks for everything!
It was great staying here and I plan to return. Leigh was very helpful and the house was clean and quiet. No complaints!
Leigh was a terrific host, she made sure we had everything we needed and looked after us with tea and toast in the morning. Highly recommend!
