If Shanghai is the new Gotham on the Huangpu, then this apartment is definitely Batman's roost. It is, in a word, spectacular -- the whole top 12th floor to itself, in isolated splendor, with stunning views of Pudong AND Puxi from a wraparound balcony, located a hundred meters from the Bund.
The climb up is first via elevator, then stairs past some pensioners cooking in the hallway à-la 30s Shanghai, making the final entrance all the more unexpectedly sumptuous, for the hosts are well versed in the creative arts: Rick is a photographer, and Nadia a designer, and the apartment reflects this in the pitch-perfect interior decoration.
As a result, my stay was far more personal and memorable than any top-rate hotel could provide (and at a fraction of the price) -- where else does the bathroom come with different colored bath mats to choose from, while the bedroom has Game of Thrones pinups on the wall?
But above all, Rick and Nadia were lovely people to talk to -- very approachable, open and low-key. Great hosts.
The room: Great bed, great reading sofa, very inviting. The bathroom sits just next to it in the hall, but all yours, and the hot strong shower comes with a great view of the Shanghai skyline.
This is the kind of apartment AirBnB was made for. If you can afford it, this is how you should experience Shanghai.
Amazing view and location。
Rick's apartment is truly fantastic with a view to die for. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay despite the typhoon that hit Shanghai on our first night and would stay again. My only suggestion is to provide a kettle and a microwave which would be very useful for longer stays.
Amazing stay at Rick's! The flat is totally lost in time and space, the only thing reminding us we were still in Shanghai was the regular chime of a nearby bell and the sound of passing boats.
Location-wise, you cannot get any better than that! You get a full 360 view of Shanghai!
The flat itself is spacious and very nicely decorated! Souvenirs from around the world everywhere, fantastic!
Quite an experience! Both for the first-time travelers and for the endured Shanghainese!
An unbeatable experience! Firstly the castle is exactly what it is - a rooftop palace overlooking possibly the best view in Shanghai. Moreover being a brilliant host and all round champion, Rick was invaluable in providing sound advice and tips to myself and my friends on how to get the most out of the city in just a few days. In big cities where there's almost too much to see and do one's level of enjoyment really boils down to your location. Rick's place proves this in so many ways and coupled with his hospitality, Shanghai has become a favourite city to each of us who stayed, and will no doubt be a place we each return to at our next opportunity. Thanks so much for everything Rick! Such a great way to start a long holiday, and would never have been as enjoyable without your guidance and hospitality!

Rick was a very good host, providing all necessary information for us to enjoy our stay in his wonderful apartment ! The view is incredible there, and you are just few footsteps from all Bund spots !
I recently read an article in the NYTimes about "Thin Spaces" or places you stumble upon that take you away from the present and transport you to another time and place. From the moment you step off the street and wind your way up the staircase to this magical penthouse, you know you've found the thinnest of spaces. Built in an old stone castle, lofty and grand in architecture, the interior of this home is cozy, crafty and ultimately inviting. Spending a night here was fun, romantic, adventurous and felt like a complete and total holiday in just 24 hours. The lights of the bund at night, the sunrise over the skyline in the morning, the sweet kitchen for cooking breakfast (or having it cooked for you) and the cozy living room for lounging, drawing or flipping through the great provided collection of books and international magazines...it was the perfect combination of experiencing and escaping Shanghai all rolled into one beautiful Castle in the sky.
First of all, thanks to Rick! He was the best host ever.
I feel that the time we've spent in Rick's Castle was the most amazing couple of days in my entire life. The interesting thing is that when we were leaving, we didn't feel bad about it. The flat gave us so much energy, happiness, amazing emotions, nice photos and calmness in our hearts that I can't even tell. The flat is not only about the location, it is also about the spirit- evertything there makes you feel really happy.
As Rick wrote, the flat makes you feel like the city is yours- 100% true.
Location, 360 view, huge space, even the building itself- it worth coming here!
Thanks again, Rick!!

Hemos estado encantados de que Rick y su familia eligieran nuestra casa, muy tranquilos y educados, muy buena gente, gracias Rick
What a great guy! I enjoyed having Rick stay with us, he was so friendly and very easy going. Communication with Rick was very easy and he was always accessible to reach. When Rick departed he left my home in great condition. I look forward to David's next stay using one of our places. He was a wonderful guest and we definitely will welcome him back with open arms. Thank you Rick for taking care of our home!
Rick and his girlfriend were wonderful tenants!!!
