Castillo del Arenal was a fantastic place to stay! The view from the balcony was breathtaking -- exactly as pictured. Eduardo was there to greet us when we arrived and showed us to the room to make sure everything was okay. It was lovely! Clean, peaceful... the only sounds we heard outside were the river flowing below, an occasional rooster crow, and maybe a dog barking in the distance here and there.
After driving around the area during our stay, I'd imagine this hotel must have one of the best views around, being situated up on a hillside in El Castillo. From what I could tell, ALL the rooms have the same fantastic view. It's tucked away, southwest of La Fortuna, putting the lake in between you and the volcano to make the view better, in my opinion, than what you'd get in La Fortuna. Staying here, you'll also be closer to Sky Adventures (ziplining, hanging bridges) and the Arenal Volcano National Park entrance than you would be if you stayed in La Fortuna.
The restaurant food and service was great. Breakfast (complimentary) was my favorite! The lunch/dinner food was reasonably priced, with many entree options ranging from $6-$16 (most under $10). And though we kept too busy to use the pool, it was nice to have the option (morning would be best for that, when the sun is directly hitting the pool).
RE: transportation -- We rented a car after arriving in La Fortuna by bus; we didn't use the 4WD once, though it may come in handy if it's really rainy. The unpaved, washboard, riddled-with-potholes road to the hotel is the SAME ROAD you'd take from La Fortuna to Arenal Volcano National Park, so it's not like staying here will change the type of car you need for your trip. We even saw taxis along this road, so if you don't want to rent a car, taxis are an option.
WiFi in the room was down during our stay, but the lobby was close by with WiFi, so that wasn't a problem. In the lobby you can play pool and foosball and enjoy a drink from the bar -- or you can take your drink outside to enjoy by the pool.
Two thumbs up! Again, the view is AMAZING. We had a great time ziplining for the first time, too. This place is definitely going on our blog's list of recommended places to stay.
We were very pleased with Castillo Del Arenal. The room was large, clean and comfortable. The view from the balcony was very special and the location of the hotel was private and quiet. The included breakfast was excellent and we ordered dinner one night there and were pleased with food then as well.
Castillo Del Arenal is a fine 3 star hotel. The rooms are clean and included a private fridge with hot showers. Each room has a balcony with a great view of the volcano, the best part of the hotel. The hotel has a common space with a pool table and hot tub. The staff was friendly and breakfast was included. The area is more secluded than staying in La Fortuna which means you won't get the best paved roads. The roads to the area the hotel is in are rocky but not horrible. We had a 4x drive which helped. We drove to the hotel one evening and it was fine. Our only negative experience was the dinner at the hotel. The ceviche was excellent but the steak and seafood soufflé was over priced and over cooked. It was one of the more expensive meals we had in Costa Rica and by far one of the worst. They also didn't offer anything when we said the food was not good. We would recommend staying at the hotel but eating at the Soda down the street. We had lunch at the soda the next day and the pork chops was so much better than the steak at the hotel and half the price.
Eduardo and his entire staff at Hotel Castillo Del Arenal were amazing. The customer service experience was one of a kind, and they honestly made my entire stay here the best part of Costa Rica.
This location is 30 minutes away from La Fortuna, but it is an absolutely beautiful and breathtaking place. The pictures you see are exactly the view you get from your room window. There is very small pool by the main building which is nice to take a dip on hot days. The food that was served and available was really delicious.
The room was perfect there was a double bed and a single bed which were very comfortable. There was also a mini fridge which was great for keeping and storing drinks.
I recommend this location to anyone who is looking to have a nice stay away from the crazy touristy locations but close enough that you can get to do things within the area.
Can't wait to stay here again.
In all honesty, Hotel Castillo Del Arenal was the best hotel my boyfriend and I stayed at during our trip to Costa Rica. It was very clean and the view from our balcony was simply breathtaking. The food at the restaurant was also very good. Although we did not get a chance to speak to Eduardo all that much (simply a goodbye on our way out), he seemed like a genuinely nice host. I would HIGHLY recommend this hotel to anyone who is visiting Alajuela. I would also recommend renting a 4x4 as the road to get to the hotel is unpaved and it's an extremely bumpy ride. 100% worth it, though.
Possibly the best view of Arenal. Very clean and comfortable
nice little place with a nice view on the arenal volcano...you can do a lot of activities around but I definitely recommend the zip lining. It was by far the most exciting thing I've done. Other activities that we have done: horse back riding to the arenal national park, hiking and a visit to the reptile zoo.
Beautiful view from the hotel - off the beaten path and very near to the wilderness. I could hear the river and the animals from our room. Off the beaten path - you would benefit from a 4x4 but it's not 100% necessary especially if the weather is dry.
