from Elizabethtown Kentucky
My boyfriend and I came to Roatan for 3 days and loved it. Gary's place was great and perfect for what we were looking for. We met some of the people who own the other condos, and it was nice to be part of a little community while we were there. The restaurant had delicious food (and live music on Friday night) so we didn't mind eating there most of the time. We also used the dive shop on-site to go scuba diving, which was great. The location is a bit removed - West End has all of the restaurants/actually feels like town, while West Bay had the super nice beaches. We were under the impression both areas were closer/we could walk, which wasn't the case, although it's not difficult or too expensive to get a cab to each place. Staying at Gary's, you feel like you have your own little part of paradise rather than staying in the main touristy area.
Overall we really liked our stay and would come back. It's reasonably priced and a great place to visit.
The resort is right on the water and the restaurant is delicious (seriously, it has some excellent barbecue from their huge pit smoker by the pool) and I totally recommend the fresh fish and shrimp dishes.)
Staff is a lot of fun — much more fun if you are at least conversant in Spanish.
The cabanas left a bit to be desired in that they lack natural light and aren't the most well-kept; we had issues with our non-central AC and when we arrived the crew was sending chlorine in through our water system because otherwise the hot water smelled of sulfur.
So, if you want to do a quick trip to Roatan and enjoy the diving but not spend too much time actually at the condos, this is an ideal place. The restaurant is seriously beyond what I (website hidden). Beware of sand flies and nasty, human-loving mosquitoes. We went home with at least two dozen bites each, even after spraying with Deep Woods OFF constantly.
Decent accommodation just a few steps from the beach. Not many restaurant/ bar choices around. Resort needs some tlc.
