The place is very private gem in frontal of the ocean... Great escape from civiluzation, the place is cozy and expacious but a bit abandoned I would say... If you are picky this won't be for u, also its about 7 miles from mal pais or Montezuma, but the road to mal pais is though if you drive 4x4 no problem can even be quite an adventure!
Pipo who took care of us was very kind even told about things to do in the area and dome tips!
Overall we had a great time, just wished to had gone to cabo blanco
If you are looking for a paired down, bohemian-beach getaway then this is the place for you!
Entirely open, we loved every minute of staying in this secluded little gem. It was simple & clean and we were enchanted by being surrounded by so much nature!
A short walk to the town or for the brave a small trek to Montazuma by foot or by bike, we found this to be the perfect little place to hideaway from the world for a few days!!
We stayed at Usha's house for 4 days over Easter and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. It is situated about a hundred feet from the ocean - we enjoyed drinking our coffee there in the morning and exploring the rocky tidal pools during low tide. The kitchen was well-equipped and we did a good bit of cooking there and we also made good use of the hammocks in the afternoon. Since the living space and kitchen of the house are completely open, the experience is a bit like camping (expect bugs, cats and hermit crabs to visit you) but that is the trade off for being right on the beach!
Usha was very helpful and responsive both before we arrived and while we were there. She gave us some helpful information about the car ferry from Puntarenas and about driving in Nicoya (the roads are pretty rough around Cabuya so make sure that you have a 4x4).
The house is as basic as it looks in the pictures, with a lesser artistic touch then the one portrayed. The cold water shower is separeted by the outside world by a courtain so you will most likely share it with lots of other beeigs. The same goes for the kitchen/living-room. You basicly live outside, right on the rocky beach of Cabuya, which is quite ok if that is what you are looking for. The most important downside is the price you pay for the conditions you are beeing offered. It's more expensive then staying in a nice beach front hotel in Montezuma or Cabuya and we actually ended up paying even more due to the host giving us missleading information about the price. Make sure you understand the final price before making up your mind about staying. Another downside to this place is that it is extremely close (3-4 meters) to the other cabin on the property so if you're ggoing for intimacy this is not the right place. If you are lucky nobody else will rent it but that can also mean that the host might be living there, which can be awkward at times.
The listing is not a true representation of this property. The pictures show a lot of flowers and artistic touches and the reality is they barely exist. Our first impression was that of a naked child running to greet us and try to climb in our car. Next, we had arrived three hours past check in, the owners were still cleaning the house and moving out (come to find out they live here and when they rent the property they move out).
When we looked around what we saw was very disappointing. The furniture was old and some broken. The mattresses were very thin. The bathroom only had cold water and a threadbare curtain for a door. Two out of the three hammocks were torn and in unusable condition. Wiring for the bathroom was very poor--exposed connections , no junction boxes.
The overall appearance was dingy and worn out. I would say they did a good job cleaning the property but there were still toys, an old broken plastic chair and other junk in the yard. Within 6 feet of the house was another small house they rent. Both properties are open concept and you are very exposed to whoever is staying there. Luckily there was a lovely couple from Canada that was next door. They made the one night we stayed bearable.
After the first night sleeping on horrible mattresses we decided that there had to be better place to stay, and we were right. Very quickly we found another house on the same beach that had an open concept, comfortable lounge chairs and was not in disrepair. It was exactly what we were hoping and expecting that Amaranto would be, but it wasn't.
Given the great location it is It is unfortunate that this property isn't given the attention it deserves.
Amaranto was basically what we expected. No frills, rustic, but met all our needs. Owner was very responsive to Us while we were there. Very clean. For a family of 5 adults, there was plenty of room and the kitchen had what we needed for cooking. If you go, you have to be willing to appreciate that it is an "outdoor" location comp, eye with bugs, cats, birds, and more.
Amaranto and Usha's place is a real Robinson Crusoe experience - A funky artisan driftwood house right on the beach, lots of homemade touches make this really unique. Facilities are pretty basic but functional, and be warned, the beach is rocky rather than sandy, although neighboring bays are much more approachable. As close to being outside without being outside as you're going to find!
