I'm a Senior Lecturer in Media and Culture at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. It's an excellent job, can't imagine doing anything else. I write about popular music, radio, popular culture and identity. In the 1990s I was DJ on BBC Radio Scotland, first an alternative music show, then electronic dance music. I've been in a bunch completely unsuccessful bands on and off since I was 16. I have too many vintage guitar effects boxes, 4 guitars and a lot of amps. And, erm, tinnitus, so I don't use most of them. I have loads of comics, I think Joss Whedon may be a genius, I accumulate Apple computers and try to keep them working. The best records ever made are the first 4 Ramones albums, and the best film is Forbidden Planet (1956). I travel a lot as part of my job, mostly staying with friends from around the world. I love New Zealand, Australia is cool. Montreal is my fave city. Dubai Airport is bizarre but fun. The cactus garden on top of Singapore Changi Airport is cactus-y. I try to travel as light as possible but rarely succeed. I like to sleep a lot. I'm very tidy and I love a good shower.
