If you've ever wanted to live out the fantasy of a night at the museum--without the ghosts and the monsters--this is the place for you: a 264-year-old (as of this writing) house that once was the home of Lewis Cass, who went on to become a general in the War of 1812, a governor, a U.S. Senator, an ambassador, the Secretary of War, the Secretary of State and a presidential candidate. (No kidding; Google him.)
Here you get to sleep in large, comfortable beds; watch a very widescreen TV; relax in front of a wood burning fireplace; access lightning-fast Internet; prepare meals in a fully equipped kitchen; enjoy a spacious backyard; and walk to one of the most charming towns in New England. And, of course, use modern plumbing.
Your hosts, Susan and Kevin Scannell/Fleming, anticipate every possible need, with plenty of towels; lots of fancy soaps and shampoos; bottled water by your bedside; food and drink in the fridge; and no restrictions to speak of other than please don't wear high heels on the original, wide plank floors.
If you're going almost anywhere in southeast New Hampshire or northeast Massachusetts, it's super convenient (we stayed there over Thanksgiving while visiting our son in Amesbury, Mass., and other family in Durham, N.H.). And if you have a child at Phillips Exeter Academy (Cass' alma mater), book now for the start of the term and graduation.
Thanks. Happy Holidays. Thanks for the nuts you left. Yummy.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay with Susan & Kevin. They made me feel welcomed from in many ways from sitting around a toasty fire in the living room to sipping hot tea and talking about Exeter and details of their historic house dating from 1750. The room was very large, clean and furnished with everything I needed including sufficient cozy comforters on the bed to ward off the cold blustery weather. Thank you Susan and Kevin! I would definitely stay there again.
Enjoyed meeting and chatting with you. Enjoy your future travels.
This is a wonderful option for visiting Exeter! A short walk to the school, and to downtown, it is very convenient. We rented the whole house last Summer, and this time I just needed the single room. Both times the home and hosts have been warm and welcoming!
Enjoyed meeting you and your daughters. Hope to see you when you visit Exeter again.
My daughter and I stayed with Susan and Kevin for two nights. We had a wonderful and relaxing time. Our hosts were welcoming and kind and made us feel at home. The house is in walking distance to downtown - so we parked our car and explored the village.
Hope you had a safe journey home.
Susan and Kevin are great hosts! My Mother and I arived late but felt like we were arriving home!
Enjoyed meeting you both. Hope the rest of our trip was enjoyable.
Such a wonderful house to be in to experience life in Exeter, and to get our daughter settled in for her new year at the Academy! Kevin and Susan provided us with a much needed home away from home for this transition. It is truly a beautiful, historic home!
Thanks so much. We will see you in October!
A beautiful, roomy, historic home that made our weekend very comfortable for a family gathering of 3 generations. The kids enjoyed the large, grassy backyard and proximity of ice cream store. The parents enjoyed having a full kitchen and private spaces for all. The grandmother needed the first floor pullout bed and bathroom, and loved the dining room for a family meal. Very convenient to Seacoast and country drives. Great value too.
Thank you very much for staying with us.
I had a pleasant first experience with Airbnb. The room in this historic home was just as pictured and very comfortable. Hosts Susan and Kevin were pleasant, and the location of the home was convenient. I would recommend this experience to family and friends.
Thanks for staying with us.
This house is located in a delightful, quiet neighborhood, just a few minutes walk to downtown historic Exeter. It's a lovely home, and was clean and spacious with tons of room for family members to spread out and have their own space as well as welcoming areas where we could gather. I never met Susan or Kevin but I did speak with Susan over the phone several times. She was wonderful, very flexible about our arrival time and had left everything ready for us!
Our experience was a good one. We did not meet Susan and Kevin but had a number of email communications with them. They arranged for the house to be open when we arrived and the house was nicely set. The area is quite perfect. It is a short walk or drive to downtown Exeter from the house. It is an older home with some very quaint quirks. I loved all the bathrooms, virtually around every corner :) We stayed for three nights surrounding our wedding and the house was home to 7 people and a rehearsal dinner. We sprawled on the porch and in the kitchen, plenty of room to enjoy this celebration. The rooms were clean and well appointed. A lovely stay!
Susan and Kevin are wonderful people and have an amazing home! The house is a gorgeous historic New England home with lots of space and an enormous yard. The neighborhood is fantastic - very close to downtown Exeter and the PEA campus. Susan and Kevin are absolutely lovely - so kind, generous and flexible. They are excellent hosts! I could not recommend their place highly enough!!
