I was too bleary-eyed when I stepped in the shower to notice there were no towels in the bathroom; and so my only complaint -- and it's also a compliment -- is that the distance between Gundeep's primary bathroom (there is a separate half bath on the first floor) and the clothes dryer, where a towel ultimately emerged (Gundeep had not been in town all summer and guests are supposed to launder linens themselves) is SOOOO LONG. Which is to say: this apartment is HUGE -- and gorgeous. And when I stayed it was also, while semi-cluttered in a few small spots, exceptionally clean. I only regret not staying longer.
I should state here that I booked this apartment in a panic -- I had to make an emergency trip to Philly -- and without having read the reviews. When I finally read them on the train I was mildly terrified. Then I saw it: WTF?? Either someone trashed the place while Gundeep was away and she had a particularly formidable cleaning service, or airbnb guests have more stringent sanitation standards than the average semiconductor fab, bc. it was not at all dirty. Realistically, she could probably stand to invest in about six more towels and two or three additional sets of sheets. (All were in the clothes dryer when I arrived, which I didn't realize until after I'd slept in clothes on the bare mattress; we got back to the apartment very late.) It's sort of silly to expect overnight visitors to spend an hour and a half doing laundry.
But I'm sure she will have gotten this all squared away by the time her fantastic apartment goes back on the airbnb market. Do yourself a favor and stay here; if you're coming to Philly you already know you can't beat the location.
Gundeep did a great job of responding to my questions. I truly appreciated it! I enjoy reading reviews so I can make a decision regarding places and would like to help other guests as well. What I liked about the place: location, the 24 hour guard, fitness room, talking with local residents, size of the apartment, 1.5 baths, washer/dryer, large fridge, internet. The bed is extremely comfortable and we loved the large window. What I didn't like: requested Gundeep to request parking for us and she didn't so the guard accommodated us. Gundeep did offer to pay 50%. The apartment was not cleaned well. The one pillowcase was ripped and stained. Some of the pots/pans were not clean so I scrubbed them. We like to buy food and cook ourselves which is why we book through Airbnb. Cleaning up after previous guests/owner/landlord is not what I like to do on a vacation. The stovetop is showing wear and tear, and the place needs a paint job. We had to purchase toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, dish soap during our stay. I have not had to do this through the other places I have stayed through Airbnb. If a person is renting their apartment/house, it would be beneficial to have cleaning products to keep the place clean (i.e. broom, counter top cleaner, furniture polish, etc.).
We had originally planned to spend 2 nights in this appartment in mid-August, but it did not happened. We made the reservation a month before, talked to Gundeep to make arrangements, and tried to reach back to her the day before we were supposed to check-in but got no answer for several days. Having no news, we had to find a last minute hotel room as we were on our way to Philly. As Gundeep explained a few days after our missed stay, she was not able to answer our messages since she was travelling herself, but she did not let us know before she left anyway. Even if we're getting a refund for our missed reservation, it remains a frustrating experience.
We had a good time at Gundeep's place! The apartment is spacious and well located between the trainstation and the city. Questions are almost answered the same second. Keep in mind you have to do some cleaning.
I hope my review will help travelers, as other travelers review have helped me:
•Great location, close to UPENN & Rittenhouse SQ, which has a lot of shops and restaurants.
•Host was quick and responsive when booking.
•24 hour doorman, easy access to the building.
•We got free guest parking in the garage, you have to ask the host about this if you have a car. We did not ask ahead and found out the day of the arrival, so we only got the parking starting the next day.
•The apartment is not well kept up and maintained, it needs a deep cleaning.
•The apartment is not clean when we arrived. Although the host did apologize and offered to have it cleaned, we did not have to time to wait around in the apartment to have it cleaned. It was just too much of a hassle to rearrange our schedule because of that.
Gundeep was very responsive; the location is very nice and safe. Parking is free from 10pm to 8am and very available. The apartment is nice, but be forewarned, it had not been cleaned. The kitchen was dirty with splatter and the place had not been vacuumed. We cleaned, but the vacuum had no suction. The sheets and towels were in the dryer so we had to do the bed, which would have been OK except for the other issues with the place. It would be great if there was one extra set of sheets and towels (there is only one set of towels, so if you have more than one person, this is a problem). No paper products short of a few rolls of toilet paper, and no trash liners (hard to take out the trash if you don't have a bag you can carry to the shute). The dishes were filthy, someone had washed them by hand and not very well. There is a dishwasher BUT you need dishwasher detergent to use it and there was none. We had to take the table cloth off the table and put it in the washer, it was really dirty as well. There is very good WiFi/internet and a huge TV, but no cable! Didn't notice this listed, but I may have missed it. The bathroom had pink film on a loofah (why is there a loofah, really?) and in the shower and hair all over; we shook out the bathroom rugs and cleaned up the hair. In the walk in closet in the bedroom, there was a closed off trash bag thrown in there with an old nasty shower curtain, etc. I couldn't bring myself to even take that downstairs to throw out. There is really no place to store anything; most if not all the drawers are taken by the tenants' personal stuff.
Bottom line is if you can look past the dirt, it's a great place. We tried to leave it better than we found it. However, if a guest decided not to wash the towels and sheets, or take out the trash, or water the plants, I got the distinct impression that the next guest would find nothing done. I don't think anyone comes in the place to clean more than once every one or two months at most. Also, I got the impression this is some sort of student housing, but I may be wrong. It just had that vibe.
Would come back if this place was cleaned in between guests. So: needs more towels, needs drawers cleaned out for guests; needs another set of sheets; needs some necessary supplies to allow guests to do their part; needs cable; and needs to be CLEANED or did I already say that? Too bad, the location and place is pretty great.
Apartment was exactly as described in the listing. Very comfortable and spacious. Check-in/check-out was easy and the apartment building is secure and luxurious. Excellent location right in the heart of Rittenhouse, and within walking distance of many fine restaurants. I would definitely stay here again.
Stayed for a week this summer. Its a great place. Didn't spend much time at the apartment as we were out enjoying the city. Location is fantastic as we were able to explore the city and its amenities - great food, cafes, and bars nearby. walk to the museums along the river.
We were in Philly for the second night of a week long college tour. This is a great modern, airy space in a good location. Very comfortable bed, large master bathroom, and a convenient second half bath. Very nice small kitchen and a comfortable sofa that our daughter slept on. Draw the blinds in the living room if bright nighttime light disturbs your sleep.
Be aware that parking in the city can be a challenge, as well as expensive. The guest parking pass for the building ($20?) needs to be reserved by the host in advance, which we only found out upon our arrival when it was not available. Fortunately, there was street parking in front of the building; free from 10pm-8am and $1.25/hour at other times, with a 4? hour time limit.
Since the hostess is away during your stay, be aware of the house rules for cleaning up before you arrive. There are instructions for emptying the garbage and washing/drying the sheets & towels, so make sure your schedule allows you to fit that in before your departure.
We didn't have time to explore the neighborhood, but a big part of its allure was the 10 minute walk to Penn.
Gundeep was very responsive to questions. A great stay!
Gundeep's place was pretty and the location is good. Check in/out was a breeze. She responded to everything. I did have to put the sheets in the dryer which was something I didn't want to do while coming in late. The place is pretty dirty. I tried to cook and they didn't have much to work with. The dishes and silverware are absolutely disgusting. You see stains on the plates and utensils. Had to pay for parking. The place was pretty dirty. I thought everything in there was great until I saw how dirty everything was and it just turned my whole stay there around. I would not stay here again. Such a shame because the place is gorgeous except it's not as clean. They had a maid come in and clean the place while I was sleeping which was weird because I was still in there.. It was very uncomfortable. They have a lot of expired food in the fridge which is gross!
