Kathryn's apartment is an absolute gem in Shanghai - an old style shikumen not to be missed! The place is tucked away in a fantastic little authentic neighbourhood close to shops & surrounds & highly recommend Kathryn and her place!
I just do not have the words to express my appreciation of Kathryn. She is an extraordinary landlady, willing to go a long way beyond anything one would reasonably expect to be of help.
The apartment itself is a jewel. Very conveniently located in a Shanghainese Shikumen, it is wonderfully furnished and fully equipped. This makes for an ideal combination of a Chinese environment with a Western ambience. Highly recommended!
I lived two months at Kathryn's place in relation to a research stay at Fudan University and it was absolutely adorable. Kathryn is extremely helpful and sweet and did all she could to make my stay easy and stimulating, sending me links to book stores and exhibitions. Thank you! The apartment is beautiful, with all you need and very charming and so is Hongkou, the neighborhood, which I really fell in love with. This is the place if you want a taste of China in the same time as you easily and quick get to the Bund and the former French Concession. I highly recommend it and will definitely stay there again next time I come to Shanghai.
Lovely apartment in a great neighbourhood. The owner sent constant, ongoing reminders of the house rules and regulations. Guests are advised to take photos and make a detailed condition report upon moving into the apartment in case of questions or discrepancies.
Response from Kathryn:
If you are looking for an authentic Shanghai experience, this is the place to go. My girlfriend and I spent one month in this amazing apartment and we loved it a lot. The apartment is very comfortable, clean, and offers all possible amenities such as a fully equipped kitchen, central heating, etc. Kathy, the owner of the apartment, put a lot of love in the apartment which makes it a very welcoming place. Kathy was an excellent host. Kathy arranged everything for us (registration with the police etc) and helped us whenever we had problems. Thank you so much!
I almost don't want to share how much we loved this place - in case it's booked up next time we want to visit! We came away delighted that we had experienced a little of the older Shanghai in the neighbourhood, the park where we saw and joined in the activities - dancing, Tai Chi etc. Kathy was a remote but attentive host and we had everything we needed. She was responsive to any requests that we had and we hope to meet her in person next time. The flat is spacious and quirky, reached up a rickety wooden stair - the balcony has views of an atmospheric old alleyway; the shower is powerful and the water hot; while the wifi is as efficient, or not, as anywhere else seems to be outside of the large cosmopolitan hotels. We were proud to be staying in such a traditional are and the whole experience was interesting and romantic.
Kathryn provided useful and timely info before our arrival and arranged for a very helpful local who speaks English to show us around the house and the neighbourhood. She left a comprehensive note on the house and the neighbourhood, responded quickly to whatever inquiry we had during our stay and personally helped us move out at the end of our stay. She has been a helpful and warm-hearted host.
Just wonderful. Kathy was very thoughtful, the apartment is lovely and very comfortable, and the neighbourhood is fascinating and charming. Nearby subway takes you where you need to go. Only one thing - bring an eye-mask, as the apartment gets lots of light in the morning.
Kathlyn has an interesting Lanehouse in Honkou district. So if you really want to know how live in a typical Chinese lane house is, that is your apartment. A nice 15 minutes walk to metro and another 15 minutes you are in the city center.
Kathlyn is a nice, kind and helpful person.
Be aware of additional services. If you do not wash the bed linen before you leave you get charged 50$.
The apartment is clean, renovated, decorative and complete. The aircon is a desaster, but Kathlyn said she wil lrepair it so when you come this should not be a problem anymore.
My husband and I stayed here for a month while I was working in Shanghai. We wanted to stay in a place that felt like we were in a traditional Shanghai neighborhood, not a tourist area- Kathy's place delivered. But it wasn't too far away, and when we wanted to go to the French Concession or the Bund, it was just a 20 minute subway ride. To top it off, her apartment has roof access so we could go up and enjoy a great view of Shanghai.
Kathryn was a lovely and gracious guest in Hong Kong -- very proactive from the start, helpful, caring of the flat and very flexible when things didn't go quite as expected! Enjoyed having her and would recommend her highly to any other host!
