A wonderful stay. Hosts made everything super easy, the house is exactly as described, and has easy access to Playa Cocles, and its a short bike or car ride away from Playa Chiquita, Uva, etc.
The house is in a perfect location, far enough away from all of the hotels and close enough that you can walk or ride a bike to the beach if you don't have a car. The house is so nice and relaxed it's hard to ever leave to goto the beach. There's plenty of space in all the rooms, kitchen and bathrooms. The only drawback is the wifi was slow or not working. Jean-Marie was great though and very accommodating during the whole stay. I will go back as soon as possible!
Location: Amazing!!! The house is just far enough away from Puerto Viejo to have a more relaxed, beach town feeling but close enough that it is an easy bike ride away. There is a market with everything you need for groceries that is also located down the street and the house is a quick walk or bike ride to Playa Cocles. Playa Chiquita/Punta Uva and Manzanillo are also in biking distance. A highlight of the place is that two bikes are provided. We loved biking around Puerto Viejo/ Manzanillo. My friend and I grew up in a beach town where we used to bike everywhere and it was great to spend a week enjoying the lifestyle of biking everywhere again.
House: Looks exactly like the photos. It is spacious, well-kept and clean and the kitchen has everything you need. The upstairs and downstairs siting areas are open air and are really nice areas to sit and enjoy the wildlife that comes through the beautiful garden. The neighbors were also friendly and quiet and we always felt safe and secure.
Owners: Jean-Marie and his wife are super friendly and helpful! They baked us yummy bread and when we had issues with the bikes (flat tire) Jean-Marie fixed the issue right away.
Overall: I really can’t name any downsides except that the internet was slow – but that is super common so get used to that if you are traveling around CR. I live in CR and am always looking for great places to rent when I need a few days off. I am definitely coming back and I highly recommend staying at El Principito.
El Principito and Jean-Marie were everything we saw and read about here. The house was essentially just like the photos... and a great place to relax and base our adventures from. It is very conveniently located, and in close proximity to other homes, yet the dense jungle it is immersed in still makes it a great nest to take in the sounds of all the howler monkeys, birds, etc.
Jean-Marie was 100% hospitable and generous with all kinds of meaningful "extras". He was great at answering questions before our trip and showing us around the house once in Cocles. He dropped off his wife's famous home-baked bread and even some fresh eggs... and was always a phone call away. Perhaps it's useful to note that the water in the shower wasn't as hot as we'd hoped, but truthfully, it wasn't an issue in a climate that is so comfortably warm all the time.
My partner, Keith, and I have nothing but appreciation for Jean-Marie, his wife Gigi, and El Principito!
Jean-Marie was very flexible in accommodating our arrival needs, even when we had a sudden change the night before our arrival and came several hours early the next day. He was very prompt to respond to all of our communications. He and his wife were very friendly and committed to providing everything as presented in the listing (i.e. they had just set up a new internet connection and when it didn't quite work, they went out of their way to ensure our access). They also arranged to lend us two cruiser bikes, which were a great way to get around the area and move from beach to beach. The house was lovely, airy, and comfortable and the yard was beautiful and active with all kinds of birds. The kitchen was very well equipped. Best of all was, again, how friendly and accommodating Jean-Marie and his wife Ghislaine were. They showed us everything we'd need in the house, gave us clear instructions about how to use things and lock up so that we felt comfortable, infomed and safe. They even showed us where in the yard we could look to find iguanas, sloths and birds, which was amazing!! They also brought us homemade bread one morning, and fresh eggs from their chickens another morning. And the area is great, walkable and bikeable to beaches, restaurants, grocery store, bars etc. Cochles is a good balance between the party atmosphere of Puerto Viejo and the quieter atmosphere a little to the east of Cochles in Playa Chiquita. We got the best of both worlds in Cochles where it was quiet but with great access to amenities. And the neighbours on the lane were very friendly too! We felt very comfortable and well looked after and would definitely return here (to this house and area) if we have the pleasure of coming back to Costa Rica.
Jean-marie was vety welcoming. It was exciting to have a little jungle bungalow, and such a treat to wake up and watch the wildlife. I would recommend better bikes, although the walk up top was great.
Jean-Marie is a fantastic host! We received a very warm welcome on the property, J-M stopped by a few times during our stay and even brought bread baked by his wife. Delicious!
The property: very tastefully designed, clean, cozy. We loved it! The kitchen is well-equipped.
There is one tiny problem: there is a cabin directly attached to Casa Luminosa and the walls are paper thin so all the phone conversations, TV and smallest noise is very audible (in both directions). The patios between that cabins are only separated by a thin see-thru curtain. We didn't feel like we had enough privacy in the place, but if you are OK with near-sharing the space, then go ahead. The interior, the host and the location are amazing!
Location: It's an $8 cab ride to Puerto Viejo and about 10min walk to the nearest grocery store and a few restos and 15min to the nearest beach. It's totally manageable without a car.
Bonus: you'll have many visitors both from the jungle and the many onsite cats. We also had a curious puppy from the neighbors wander in a few times. Colorful characters!
