I am a Professional Kiteboarder, long time Maui Windsurfer and Surfer. Originally from Lake Tahoe, CA
Staying at Karen's has been one of the recent good decisions I have taken.
From the beginning you feel like at home with no stress from other people staying at the house.Everything is dimensioned to support the allowed guest at the house. The north shore of Maui is where the local life is and Karen's is just 5 min ride to other villages like Paia and Haiku where you can really feel like one local. It is so nice to relax and have a shower after visiting Maui and maybe watch a movie at Netflix or check the e-mail with the super fast 50 MB connection. If you are into water sports whatever type she is the one to ask with 30 years experience in the island. Just the tips received from her are money saving.
The neighborhood is also relaxing and you can park just in front of the house. The views of the sunset are just amazing.
Be ready to cope with natural life and some small bugs but nothing that will harm you. They are more scared of you than you should be of them.
I am already missing Karen and her place after two weeks at her house.
Sure would repeat!
My stay with Karen was great. She is a gracious and welcoming host and her home is ideally situated in central Maui making it easy to make short day trips to any place on the island. The room was clean and comfortable and quiet. The shared kitchen has all the amenities you need should you want to cook your own meals and Karen makes available her expresso maker for a fresh cup of coffee in the morning. Nearby Makawao is a historic Hawaiian cowboy town with quaint shops and restaurants. I would definitely recommend staying here to any of my friends coming to Maui for the value and the location. And if you want to try kite surfing, Karen is definitely the person to learn from. Plus some of the best wind and kite surfing in the world can be found nearby.
I wasn't at the house much because I was busy exploring but Karen was a great host. House is located in the middle of the island and the bedroom is pretty simple. If you're looking for a resort experience on the beach, this is not it. If you want to stay on Maui with a local and see the countryside, then this is a great place to stay!
I spent 4 nights at Karen's place, using it as base to make a number of trips around the island by car.
Makawao is in "up-country" Maui, with a slower, easy-going pace that I find far preferable to the bustle of the resort towns elsewhere on the island. From the house you have a superb view down to the coast and to Kahului and beyond (the NW part of the island). The house is in a superb location for trips along the Hana highway, up to the summit of Haleakala and around the bottom of Maui.
The room itself was very comfortable, with a separate bathroom/shower for guest(s) and you have free roam of the kitchen/living space too.
Karen has been on the island for more than 25 years and I had numerous chats with her about whales, kite-boarding and life on the island.
I had a very enjoyable stay at Karen's place and would happily go back on another occasion.
What a wonderful stay! Karen was an excellent host, the accommodations were great, especially the view, and staying with a few other guests only added to the experience. I would stay with Karen again in a heart beat.
I spent a week at Karen's house. The location is really good, despite it is 5 minutes form the coast. If you are surfer, kiter or windsurfer this is for sure very good location, everything is close Paia, Hookipa and also Kanaha beach. You can avoid using very busy road Kahului-Paia, from Karen’s house it is a short drive to highway direct to Kahului. Karen is a great person and I was feeling like to be at home. I can use her kitchen. The view from living room was amazing and some morning I was just watching the Ocean. She can give you a lot of good advices of Maui Island. She is a very good kiter and run a kite school. You may rent a board or kite at her. If I come to Maui again I will definitely come to Karin’s house.
Karen has been an amazing host. The location of her house and the beautiful view over the coastline were great. My room and bed were very comfortable, Karen is an artist and her beautiful artwork is displayed throughout the house and adds a wonderful athmosphere of island life. I enjoyed every minute of my one week stay. Karen even let me borrow one of her surfboards. Thanks, Karen.
Everything was as we expected = great. Karen is a great host. We liked the room and the whole house.
Karen was an excellent host. We wanted to stay in upcountry and Paia hotels were too expensive. Makawao is a nice alternative - about 15 minutes away from Paia or to the Road to Hana. Karen has lots of stories to tell about her kite sailing business. We felt at home - she let us use her kitchen, living room etc as we wanted. We would totally stay with her again.
My wife and I spent a night at Karen's before driving on to Hana. Her house is located in a lovely uphill spot, and she set us up nicely in her guest room. Everything was simple and convenient. We enjoyed dining at a great sushi restaurant/deli in Makawao proper, a short drive away, and visited again the following morning for donuts on a stick from the town's Komoda bakery. Good times!
