Happily living in New England!
This is a great house in a lovely spot on the lake. Marilyn was responsive and nice - a great owner to work with. The house itself is stocked with everything you may need - plenty of guidebooks, toys, linens, cooking equipment. The porch is absolutely my favorite part of the house - and the patio in front of it would be great for larger families. I slept upstairs with my toddler son (him in the crib that was provided) and even though it was over 80 outside at 10, it was still cool up there.
There are really only a few things holding me back from saying this is the perfect getaway. One, the water in the house is gross smelling and it changed our plans of cooking in at night. I'm used to lake vacations and odd smelling water but this was to a new level (although it was safe - I just hated bathing and washing dishes as it was so sulferous).
The second is the bathroom - specifically the tub needs some help. I brought clorox wipes to clean everything and attacked the tub but didn't make a big difference. I know a lot was the mineral sediment from the iron in the lake but the tub was pretty dirty when we arrived. I was very happy we had packed my son's fold up tub.
The location is fine - the state park is just up the road and our toddler son loved swimming in the lake. We ended up finding a few places outside of town on Yelp to eat. The gas station across the street loaned us an adjustable wrench to adjust the crib height - they also had pints of ben and jerrys :)
All in all this is a GREAT house - just what I'd expect in a camp house on a lake as far as furnishings but the porch makes it really GREAT. I have to say though unfortunately the smelly water is the primary reason I would not return. I know it was safe to use but it changed our plans and made the trip more expensive aa we had to eat out a lot.
We had a very nice time at Marilyn's place. The cottage itself is very cozy, with a great sun porch running the width of the house -- a perfect place to curl up with a novel and read a novel! The kitchen is basic but nonetheless has everything one needs. The property backs out onto a lake which was great for swimming. The only very slight downsides are, first, that the town itself really has very little in the way of amenities. The town store was closed when we were there -- whether under renovation or going out of business for good we were not sure, but it was 5 miles to the closest grocery store, and second, that the beds are very small. There is no queen or king bed for couples -- only 4 singles spread out over three bedrooms.
What a wonderful place - close to things but private.
The location is wonderful and Marilyn could not have been nicer.
This is definitely a place we would recommend and somewhere where we would rent again.
We needed a few extra beds for a graduation celebration and found this lovely home just a mile away from ours! Marilyn was extremely accommodating to meet me for a walk through once the reservation was in place. I didn't need to stock anything besides simple food items and she was gracious enough to allow me to so that early on Friday before the late afternoon check in time. All of our guests raved about the stay, the view is beautiful...they only wished they had more time just to relax on the porch! We will make use of this little gem again!
We were looking for a nice little place to disconnect from our routine and boy did we found what we wanted in the Halcyon House! It had that homy cottage feeling while being very well equiped for outdoor and indoor activities: BBQ, outside fireplace, canoe, rowboats, kids games, a wonderful veranda to read or play games, confortable sofas and chairs. Marilyn was generous of tips about what to do and see in the area and she made us feel welcome right away.
If you are looking for the cottage you never had, this is your place!
Halcyon House is beautifully situated in back to the lake. Very restful and cool. Surrounded by very fragrant pine trees. There is some traffic noise, as Main Street is somewhat busy, but we weren't bothered by it, because sitting on the back porch or patio, or going down to the lake is so restful you don't tend to notice the noise. After 10:00 p.m. when the gas stations closes there is almost no traffic.
My husband found the bed (in the master bedroom) comfortable, but I found them quite hard. Being a side sleeper my hips were sore after a night in the bed, but after a few nights I adjusted. However, all the beds are the same, so if you need a soft bed . . . there just isn't one.
The kitchen is well equipped, and the living room is roomy and very comfortable. The house is pleasantly cooled by the lake breeze most of the time, although one night the humidity was high and it was a bit warm at night. Still, we never turned the A/C on, and most of the time it was cool in the house.
There are lots of things to do in the area. There is an "Antique Row" not far from Kingston (in NH) about 1/2 hour's drive, and another one in Maine (about :45 drive). Most of these places do not have low prices, but a few have a variety of goods and you can find some bargains. However, Carol's "Barn Sales" on Route 111 is a bargain hunter's dream. It's about :10 from Halcyon House. Take a left out of Marilyn's driveway, and rive straight up the road until you see the house on the right with a big sign, "Antiques". Tons of bargains. Some stuff not in great shape, but there's a lot to look at and you can find something at a great price. Also, Carol sells flowers for $2 with a vase -- can't beat that!
Up the road a bit from Carol's (take a right out of her driveway) is a wonderful ice cream place (closes at 9:00 p.m.) on the right. We had peach ice cream made from fresh, local peaches, and it was superb. You've GOT to stop there after finding a treasure at Carol's!
We enjoyed N.H. Pizza in Exeter. Great pizza and excellent fried haddock. Try the fried mushrooms and get the blue cheese dressing. Real chunks of blue cheese! Don't go to an expensive lobster restaurant in Maine (tourist traps on Route 1) -- just visit a lobster shack and get a lobster roll for $9.95. Ida Mae's in Seabrook has great lobster rolls and fried clam strips. Yum.
Beautiful area and we would return -- the seashore is SO close, there is a lot of antiquing and yard sales, and the entire area is very lovely. Just driving along the road under the huge trees and smelling the pines is a fun thing to do. Lovely homes, too.
We had another relaxing stay at Halcyon House this year! Marilyn even provided toys for our daughter to play with and outdoor toddler play equipment. She had everything we needed to make the stay as easy as possible. It's such a convenient location from Boston too-only 55 minutes away. I highly recommend this house for a family getaway!
Very cute cottage in a great location! Perfect little town to just get away from it all.
A charming lakeside house in a beautiful, idyllic setting. We loved its roominess and the 3-season porch was an added delight. A great place to come with a small group of friends or family members.
We enjoyed our stay at Halcyon House. The place was clean, comfortable and roomy. It also was stocked with anything and everything you would need. We enjoyed meeting Marilyn and her son and look forward to renting from them again.
