We booked a night before we came and Sou told us, it was no problem to come, but unfortnately he couldn't host us when we arrived. He was very nice and feeling really sorry - talked to the Cabdriver to bring us to a save and nice place in Kolkatta. We couldn't even be angry with him cause he was so worried taking care about us.
So, if the booking works out and Sou can take you, I'm sure everything is fine!!
Sou homestay is an Amazing Place of Freedom in Kalkutta. Quite, clean, friendly. The mum of sou cooked for us every evening. We got tee and cakes, sweets... The Place is not Central but You can reach Center easely ( for india) . So we felt good and helpt in many little travellers Problems. Thank you sou and Thank you to your mum.
We booked one night with Sou, but unfortunately weren't able to arrive because our train to Kolkata was delayed 11 hours. All of my communication with Sou was very easy. He was really friendly and so helpful. Even when we let him know that we would not be arriving until the morning, he offered us showers and a warm breakfast. I hope we can come back to Kolkata to stay with him and his gracious family!
Had a little trouble to begin with regarding arrival times (our plane landing at midnight, we weren't permitted to arrive at Sou's until 8am), however Sou was extremely flexible to accommodate for this and we stayed with him the next day. In addition, Sou and his family have been very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The found offered by their cook was fantastic as was that offered by his mother too. The district of Kolkata where Sou lives is very nice, quaint and gives a pleasant insight into the more day to day pace of Kolkata life away from the congestion of the centre. Easy transport connections to the metro mean the location is not a problem at all.
Would highly recommend staying with Sou if possible for a warm and pleasant stay in Kolkata.
Sou was extremely kind and available via the phone. He is living in Dubai but the moment I landed at the airport he called me and spoke with the taxi driver to make sure I got to his home. He speaks excellent English and Bengali and Hindi. I stayed in his family home with his mother and house helper. She was a little put off when I arrived, as though I was a surprise, and had some strict requests including when I could be at the accomodation (which I had to leave at 11am and not return until 8pm!). I thought this too confined so I moved to another location. The room was that of staying in a family home and comfortable with working fan, bathroom, private room. The neighborhood is decently quiet and full or interesting character. Very hard to find though, even for the taxi driver with Sou directing. As long as you have Sou on the phone, you will get there eventually. Even from Dubai, Sou was helpful with tips about the city. Recommend if you're easy going and can handle the adventure of life.
I had done instant booking at souboyy;s home. since I have send some feedback from before which looked good. I booked its place. you will realize that its summer and heat is scorching in kolkatta. I landed and headed straight towards his house. To my utter dis satisfaction. I didn't know where the house was even after the proper address was mentioned of the house. I reach near the house. and I called souboyy. the number mentioned in airbnb was a dubai number. I called him and he says. " Ohhh you were suppose to come" I totally forgot. my phone is not working properly. Im like "I understand just help me check in and I need to get to a meeting. He is like let me call you after 10 mins as I am working. Im like what do I do in this heat. he hangs up the phone After that he calls and tell me that his mom is not at home and that I will have to wait 4-5 hours. if I can wait fine otherwise cancel the room. Im like wtf. If you had any problem why have you activated instabook. instabook mean you are available all the time to receive the guest. he started suggesting some other place like a hostel. Im like bro if i want some other place I didn't need to book you in the first place. by that time my taxi driver was getting impatient and wanted to leave. I had no options but to leave the taxi and stand in the heat with my bag. His whole area where he stayed smelt like a pig. there was a garbage dumping area 2 minutes from his house which coz that. I was left with baggages in my hand. I had to cancel my meeting which why came all the way from mumbai. Im sweating profusely trying find anther house. there were not many transportation in that area.I had no choice but to find the closest house. other wise I would have fainted. I enter this street where there are range of mens hostel all of them on top of this garbage dump. stinking to the core. I took a room and dumped my bag. after 5 hours I called him again As i was scared to stay in the hostel cause the ambience was very scary. plus there were million mosquitoes and I was scared I might get dengue all malaria. so I called him again. thinking that his mom might have come and I could shift to a place where I wouldn't die. I call him up and tells me that his mom is uncomfortable with the idea of a stranger staying in his house during absence. If that was the case He should have not listed his house on airbnb and even if you list. you should not keep it on instabook and torture customers. I recommend strict action from airbnb against this person. It was the worst experience...
After a really unfortunate communication mix up and some trouble finding the house, my partner and I learned that Sourendra himself had left the country and we were in the hands of his mom who spoke only a little English. We weren't sure what to expect at that point.
But, actually, this turned out to be one of the most genuine experiences of our entire trip. There's no other way to describe it but real. We were in one of Kolkata's famed community blocks and walked around the the streets at night past neighbourhood girls going to temple. We sat with the locals on narrow streets and ate normal food for next to nothing. It was mesmerising and the first time in India that we were able to get off the tourist track.
The home itself was a very normal Indian household and we felt so comfortable. Not in the hotel way, mind you, but in the way you feel when you know you're being taken good care of. Had tea with mom and communicated with gestures and random words and she showed us her family pictures and her worship room.
When our stay was finished, a lovely uncle made us a super lunch and shook our hands and sent us on our way with our hearts full of gratitude.
Make sure you get proper directions to the house before and ensure someone will be there to meet you. But definitely stay here if you have the chance.
