The house is set about 100 yards back from the island road; a fastidiously tended tropical garden - with grass that felt like carpet under your feet - stood majestically in front of the house. We spent our early evenings, as the sun set, getting a massage in the garden pagoda, or lounging on the front deck's Thai cushions with a glass of wine. During the day the walls of the house would disappear as we'd open all the windows and french doors letting the ocean breeze cool us and the birds lull us into a relaxed, almost meditative state. The house is furnished with a mix of traditional Thai pieces, Japanese art, and modern conveniences (surround sound, flat screen TV, wifi). A house manager was on hand, and cleaners available when we needed them. The Chinese-style front doors open into a cozy living space: a plush couch and ottoman, thai cushions to sit or lay on the floor; inviting you to laze away the afternoon, reading a book or indulging in a nap. There are 4 bedrooms (and 5 beds) in the house; however, if you come with more than 3 couples, you'll probably be pulling straws to see who has to take the isolated basement-type room on the ground floor at the back of the house. Having said that, this house is perfect for 3 couples or a family with a bunch of kids. The ground floor room might be more suitable for older kids (12+) or your nanny (in my opinion).
We came from Bangkok via a private van, so we hauled a week's worth of food and wine with us to the island. The kitchen was well equipped to handle our cooking (gas stove, microwave, utensils, plates, bowls, glasses, wine opener). There isn't much on the island as far as fresh ingredients, but we did sink our teeth into some juicy fresh pineapple grown on the island.
The house is, in our opinion, in a prefect location, in a quiet area away from other resorts, but also near a few restaurants and next to a well stocked mini-(website hidden) Kao beach can be accessed by walking straight across the street, 5 minutes down a dirt road. We noticed a few jelly fish near the shore so we avoided swimming on this beach, but the sand was nice (no sandflies), and the beach was quiet for us to sit and (website hidden) Suan Yai was the nicest beach to swim at, with a section cornered off by nets (to keep the jelly fish out perhaps?), and beautiful wavy sand and shallow waters to float and soak up the sun with peace of mind - especially if you have kids. We also made a couple trips to the wild, untamed, gorgeous, Robinson Crusoe-like Laem Son beach - find it...if you can!
We hope this property remains available for years to come because there's nothing like it in Thailand - especially for the price. Thanks Joseph.
this is an exceptional place to stay. Right on the snow. The host was very helpful and welcoming. Novice or experienced skiers would love it.. Short walk to shops and restaurants.
Great place situated in a ski in ski out position. Joseph was more than helpful in my booking sorting out a couple of problems that arose in the beginning with the room booking. Would recommend nozawa onsen and staying in Josephs chalet
Even though we arrived early, we were able to leave our bags safely at the lodge and were able to head straight back out and get on the hill as soon as possible.
We were impressed with our large room with its great view and the spacious shared living space. The Kitchen was modern and had everything we needed. There were area maps right there on the table which allowed us to find the nearby shops, hire and bus stops.
The location and view is pretty special and the access to the ski lift is just a quick glide down, straight from the front door. Also I must mention, the fabulous large windows in the living area which allow you to sit back and watch the sunrise and of course the groomers. Better than any TV.
Johnny was helpful and friendly and had that fine balance of being available but also giving us our privacy, which made our stay comfortable and relaxing.
The description for this accommodation is accurate and we were not disappointed in anyway, Joe was always quick to respond to any email questions I had before we left for our holiday and made us feel welcome. We highly recommend staying at Kenashi Lodge.
We have just had an amazing time in Nozawa Onsen, and really enjoyed our stay in the Kenashi slope side lodge. It is a perfect place, though I am loathed to say that in case too many other people book it up! Johnny and Linda were great hosts and very helpful telling us where to ski, where to eat and how to make the best of the lodge. It is a huge space, very well kitted out. It is right on the slopes by a ticket office and two lifts. One lift is the perfect start to the day, the other at the end of the best ride home. The rooms are really warm, and the beds very comfortable. You have access to two kitchens and dining tables with everything you could possibly need to make a feast - but we just ate breakfast in the lodge as the restaurants are so good and so well priced. Thank you Joe. Great place
Great location, literally right on the ski hill at Nozawa, beside one of the lifts.
Everything is new and modern in this 3 floor building. Great common areas, with a nice kitchen. You can watch people coming down the slopes from the couch. The downstairs common area has a ping pong / pool table.
It's a short walk down the hill from the ski slope into town (restaurants, etc).
Enjoyed our stay, no complaints!
Acceuil tres chaleureux de Johnny sur place. Logement tres agreable et bien maintenu juste au pied des pistes. Un peu eloigne du centre du village mais a distance tres raisonnable de 10-15 min a pied.
The lodge is conveniently located around the chair lift station allowing nice skiing in and out. Johnny is a most friendly and helpful host. The most difficult part was to carry our luggages from the carpark upslope to the lodge. Luckily , Johnny also helped us with these!
The pros: ski in/ski out. Laid back.
The cons: dirty, poor communication, no pickup, no help with finding this lessor know location by the host. The host is not on sight and his assigned host does not seem to care about his guests, had no clue we were coming, had no clean sheets or bedding prepared, was more concerned about his day on the mountain with his friends then his job as a host. There were a lot of bugs, and the bathroom appeared to have vomit in the drain. Cleanliness was a big problem for me, especially after coming from a very well kept accommodation in hakuba that upheld the japenese traditions. The dirty odor of the house was obvious on every floor. The only saving grace was that Johnny, the host of the house, invited us to use his upstairs space as a consolation because he didn't feel like getting our scheduled room ready and doing laundry. On the day we were leaving he asked us to help him get the bedding out to wash because he had new guests arriving and he needed to move from his posh space on the third floor. I imagine he wanted to get to the fresh snow as quickly as we did, but as paying guests of the house, that was totally inappropriate.
Joseph is a reliable, communicative host I'll recommend. The ski lodge was lovely, the rooms on the middle floor were spacious and our group enjoyed the communal space. Made our stay Nozawa onsen an enjoyable one.
I have known Joe for many years, back in the day we used to work together. He is a fantastic human being. Very thoughtful and clever. He is a fabulous host, and very generous with his time. We have travelled in Japan and Thailand together, several times.
His Thai house is simply an awesome place to be. It's not the island to go for 'full moon party' type break, rather a place to simply chill, think or study. Go and stay at Joe's place. You won't regret it.
