I am an easy an outgoing Native New Yorker; a substance abuse therapist and Psyd D student
I share my apartment with my cat Lulu. I am quiet and low key and basically looking to rent a furnished room to an individual(s) who need short term accommodations. The room is clean, neat and cozy..(not huge)
The apartment is located in an area that is easy to get to and close to all types of travel options within a few short blocks. I like my place because its in a residential area that's located in a quiet part of the city not too far from the fun and excitement of, yet far enough to allow you to sleep and recharge for your the daily activities. You will need to recharge if you want to make the most of NYC
To help you enjoy the city we've recommend a few tips:
For both the bus or train I recommend a unlimited metro card which is good for both the train and bus and allows you to get on and off anywhere. Also its a good idea to download a MTA or Ride NYC phone app onto your smartphone or iPhone or blackberry if you have one, which gives you a map of the metro system.
The trains run pretty much 24/7. However, be on the look out for some weekend changes with some of the train lines, so I do recommend reading the signs in case of any changes due to track repairs
Tip # 2
If you are into biking or running, we are two blocks from the Hudson River Greenway which allows you to walk, run or bike all the way to Battery Park which is at the very tip of Manhattan. And if you don't wish to run too far, there is always Riverbank State Park that has a track and an indoor pool available in cooler days and an outdoor pool during the summer until 6pm. And of course there is Central Park which is a breeze to get to by taking the C train to West 110th Street Station, which takes less then 9 minutes to get to.
If you are into Hot Yoga, there is Bikram Yoga of Harlem on West 145th Street, a 10 block walk or a 5 minute bus or train ride. You can buy a pass for the week or per day. I highly recommend this place.
Also I have a gym membership that allows me to bring a guest. A place located 2 blocks away opened Monday through Thursday 24 hours and til 7pm Saturday and Sunday. Just let me know
Food shops and restaurants. New York can be a dieter's nightmare or dream. There are dozen of amazing restaurants. Some pricier then others. In the area I live in, there are tons of Dominican and Mexican restaurants that are dirt cheap. Cheap as in being able to get a whole roasted chicken, with rice and beans for under $15.
To save on money try eating local since the restaurants in the area are really cheap. However, research a little and you will find a variety of great option for great prices. The East Village has amazing place that are within budget. There are at least over 6 Indian restaurants on East 6h Street between 2nd and 1st Ave, with prices ranging from $8 to$13 dollars for complete dinners. The food list is huge. Let me know and I might be able to help.
Tip # 4.
Home Cooking can save money. We can work out cooking arrangements if you need the kitchen. But, keep in mind access to kitchen will be 9 am until 11 pm
For those of you who love museums, New York is packed with a selection of museums and getting there from our apartment is easy. Just take the number # 4 bus on Broadway and 155th Street until you get to 5th Avenue across from Central Park and the museum select will begin around 110th Street with El Museo Del Barrio...and continue all the way pass 86th Street with the MET. There are also museum in many other locations, but 5th Ave has a very large selection located along 5th Ave.
a great day to go to the museums is Saturday since they are open until 9pm. Of course there are museums all over, so i suggest doing a little research in advance so you can take advantage of the amazing selection
There are tons of free and dirt cheap activities you can do in NYC. Let me know what you like and I will try to have some information available.
I've enclosed a very neat website to help you look for amazing discounts:
Tip # 7
If you decide to book with me. Make sure you write down my contact information, like the address and phone, in case you misplace your phone or run out of battery life. Also down load apps into your blackberry or iPhone with ride NYC and Hop Stop. These apps are valuable resources that will allow you to find your way around
Once you decide to book with airbnb, don't forget to include your arrival time, this way someone can arrange to meet with you and not keep you waiting endlessly. Remember you are renting from individuals and not hotels who are open 24/7. You are staying with real folks who are not always at home...so make sure to include your arrival time in your email messages.
Tip # 8
the morning check out time is 9am during the week.
Weekend check out is flexible, but we should discuss it in advance so I can make arrangements for the keys or in case I have guest arriving.
I can accommodate later check out times, but only if you let me know in advance. I need to know at least 2 days before. This is simply to avoid having new guest wait too long for check in due to having to clean the room
Tip # 9
Be careful with getting overcharged by taxicabs. They sometimes take the longest route in order to increase the meter. NYC train system is fairly safe and runs 24/7. The #1 train which is 2 short blocks from my place is always filled with people...and I mean always. You will find the train can be crowded even at 3 am in the morning. If you are afraid of walking from the train, I can always meet you.
Tip # 10
Do your research before you travel anywhere. If you don't know how expensive a city is, you will find yourself running low on funds very quickly. Be wise, budget yourself. Also research New York city before visiting..it is nothing like the movies or the tv show sex in the city. NYC is expensive and can be very stressful if you have no idea what you are getting into. The best way to enjoy the city and I mean any city in the world is to research and learn about your option. Also connecting with a native of the city you visit allows you to navigate better
Remember to book as soon as you can, cause good deals get taken right away.
If you are staying in NYC and need a temporary place that is clean, cozy and friendly, look me up. My place is quiet, which will let you revive enough to go back out and enjoy the energy of NYC.
