I am known here as Joanna, back to the early days when not too many people spoke English here and Spanish pronounces every sylable. My name is Joanne aka Fanny Barry, from Boston, Massachusetts. I moved to Tulum, Mexico in 2006 and built this little Jungle Beach House around clearing in the tropical jungle. Living here while I built the house in what seems like a very different era, my blood, sweat, joy, tears and art are very much a part of the property and are what make the house so special. It is installation art.
The small palapa style, or thatched roof, has a very open floor plan and a vibe that is relaxed and comfortable and both basic and I think elegant at the same time. Some might call it shabby chic but I think it is more rustic elegance.
I teach yoga at Maya Tulum and am certified by the American Aerobic Association International and the International Sports Medical Association. My Vinyasa Flow classes are derivative of my personal practice and many great teachers that I have had along the way. If I have to label myself it would be yogi, lifetime athlete, writer and artist. But change is always constant and life leads you on different paths, no? I use my yoga practice to help myself and others reach their potential physically, mentally and emotionally. Joanne, aka Fanny Barry writes and blogs at her That Barry Girl site. You can see her recent yoga video on the site under Destination Yoga.
