This cabin is truly magnificent. It is beautiful from the outside and lovely open plan wood cabin with mezanine on the inside. We stayed during the winter in early March and feared before arrival it might not be warm enough but it is so cozy and warm with radiators and underfloor heating.
There are two bedrooms then a sofa and space to sleep a few on the mezanine. It's naturally a very quiet location. We enjoyed 3 or 4 soaks in the hot tub which is always there to use, it just needs warming up for an hour or so before. Magna even arranged for it to be on so we could have a soak on arrival! There is an incredibly comfy recliner chair and stool by the corner panoramic windows so you can sit and look out across the huge Fjord - stunning.
There is a small kitchen that is relatively well equipped. Note there is no freezer (not a problem in winter obviously!). There is a closed fire but note to any non-icelanders, wood does not come with the cabin and it is unimaginably expensive in iceland, understandably as there are not that many trees. I recommend just enjoying the hot tub or just a few fires as a treat!
There is a TV, DVD player and HI FI system so if you bring your own connections, you can wire in laptops and ipods to play music as we did.
This cabin sits next to 2 other identical cabins which are about perhaps 80 meters from each other but don't intrude at all on the view. We chose this cabin as we are amateur photographers who wanted to photograph the northern lights and be able to see them directly from the cabin. Do note that whilst this cabin is in the valley of the fjord, it looks directly north, up the fjord, across Akureyri town. Whilst not a city, it does create some light pollution. So if the northern lights are faint, or far north further towards the arctic circle and therefore lower in the horizon, then you will struggle to see these north in the lower horizons because of the light from the town in the distance. But a short drive north solves that. Having said that, if the aurora are slightly stronger or more above or south of the cabin, it is a great place to view. We had a fabulous show of the lights on our last night, directly outside the cabin, which provided a lovely foreground to the photos. Absolutely a trip highlight.
I highly recommend husky sledging, snowmobiling, skiing up on the ski hill, and a trip to Myvatn lake and hot pools (as well as Goddifoss and Dettifoss waterfalls) while you are staying at the cabin (obviously the first three being winter activities).
Highly recommend! Thank you.
We stay two nights in this nice and quiet apartment and we enjoy our stay
I didn't have the chance to meet Magnifridur in person, but the process was very smooth and the apartment was perfect. Magnifridur's husband came down to check everything was OK, as well as giving us some tips on Akureyri - a very pleasant man. Highly recommended!
Very nice basement apartment, close to food store, swimming pool and downtown.
A clean cellar apartment in Akureyri town. Good for 5 people. Quiet location. Nice kitchen. Tap water smells like eggs but tastes good. Friendly hostess speaks fluent English and Swedish.
This is a good place for your stay in Akureyri. If you plan to visit Lake Mývatn, I recommend your next accommodation is in the Mývatn area, because the road is rather long and there's a lot to see near Mývatn.
Lovely hosts and a really clean convenient accomodation, close to the center, swimming pool and botanical garden.
